Why is Quora more popular than Yahoo Answers? What elements make it the more popular Q&A site?

A couple of years back, early 2015 I guess, I wanted to know about the basics of big data and its importance in industry.I googled “What is Big data”The first link popped up was Wikipedia - I opened in a new tab and set it aside. The second link was from Yahoo answers. I opened and was looking for some useful information. There were answers like:I was confused, irritated and most of the answers didn’t answer the question. The next link which popped was from Quora.I could find answers like this:Answer was by Balaji Viswanathan (பாலாஜி விஸ்வநாதன்) sir. That is the moment I followed him and read his other answers too! And that was the moment i decided not to refer yahoo answers for anything in future.Unlike Yahoo answers, Why was the answer better? It summed up all the information - technical explanation with real life examplesPictures made it easier for me to connect with answerThe credential “Ran a Big data company” made me believe the answer is from someone trustworthy.Upvotes and comments of appreciation from people in related field made me feel secured about the answerComments were healthy and was debating its future application. So, with no further discussions, Quora is always better than Yahoo answers.

In your opinion, how should history be taught in schools to booster interest in the subject itself?

I notice that most people come out of high school and middle school history being turned off by the subject itself, myself included.

However, I got my college degree in history so something must've sparked my interested well enough to study it on the undergraduate level (what got me interested was visiting the museum of San Diego history, which is where I live). However, elementary school and middle school history was incredibly boring to me and I'm not sure if it's the way it's taught or not. I've talked to a number of people who hated history because of the way it was presented in school (i.e. memorizing dates, etc).

The difference between the way history is taught in school, both primary and secondary and the way it is taught at the university level is clear.

So how can the education system improve the teaching of history? Has it improved in the last 15 years or so? Are textbooks still just as vague as they were back in the early 90s when I was in school?

Why do people prefer Quora over Yahoo! Answers?

Oh boy, this is going to be fun.Q1: Why do we need water to survive?Quora: Our bodies are mostly made of water, so we need to continually replenish our water supply in order to survive.Yahoo! What's so bad about Yahoo! Answers?

I have to disagree that it's the worst thing in the world. It has shortcomings for sure. But Yahoo Answers serves the masses, while Quora still serves the niche. Quora has a strong following in Silicon Valley and in general among internet entrepreneurs, software geeks, etc. But that would hardly be 2-5% of the masses. I have to believe that average intellectual level of the community on Quora is pretty high and I would not expect them to use Yahoo Answers. If you somehow bring the 100 million users of Yahoo Answers on Quora then they are likely to create a significant amount of spam on Quora as well. No community moderation can stop that. Turns out that what is "spam" for a few of us, is actually entertainment for millions out there. People actually visit those pages (in millions) and click on ads as well! Yahoo does not pay or promote people to create spam. In fact, a lot of research goes into how to tactfully deal with spam without hurting the community. I love Quora and spend a lot of time on it. However, I find it very hard to get answers to non-tech questions on Quora. I have to turn to Yahoo or Aardvark for them. I believe both Yahoo Answers and Quora can coexist like any other niche and mass products in the world.

Why Miss Philippines did not won the Miss Universe?

She could not have won the Miss Universe crown because it was a choice from the 3 finalists : Miss Haiti, Miss Colombia, and Miss France. Miss Philippines was not in the Top 3 and therefore could not possibly be declared winner,

But she was in the Top 6 where they chose the Top 3. All the contestants were asked questions and, in my judgment, and as most Filipinos also think by way of reactions on social media, hers was not the best answer. One could even say that her reply was irrelevant to the question. When selecting a winner, judges select the finalists form the batch of the most beautiful (she was in that batch of the 6 most beautiful) based on how they answer questions. It is a measure of their intelligence, of their EQ (how they would behave, if they don't get rattled, if they are composed even under pressure) because the winner will be touring the world as an "ambassador", answering unscripted questions, relying only on native intellect. The jusges probably did not think she had that, rightly or wrongly. Thus she didn't even make it to Top 3.

What is the best thing that has ever happened to you on Quora? (except getting many up votes to your answer :p)

When I joined Quora, I became totally inactive on whatsapp and Facebook as I wanted to stay away from people for sometime. The number of people I know personally (face to face interaction) on Quora is single digits! I very recently re-installed my whatsapp and I realised I had changed as a person. I found meaningless gossips irritating and my friends somehow secretly hated the new me. I love the new me. :)I started writing a lot, both answers and posts on my blog. I don't call myself a writer. I don't even think I am a good one. (I am learning to become one though!) But when I got 50+ followers for my blog, it felt like an achievement! I should thank them all for encouraging me. :)After I crossed 500+ followers, I started coming across people who are rude. Really rude. In the beginning, it was affecting me. But as time passed by, it didn't matter. I have become a "buddha" where things like this didn't matter to me anymore. I got used to it. So I think I have to thank the people who have been rude to me too. Interaction with the rude is also the best thing that happened to me! It bought the best out of me! :)I started getting compliments from sane people for a change and it felt good! I have heard people complain about creeps here, but fortunately I haven't come across any. *fingers crossed*I did talk to new people. I made one nice friend here. Jash! It is really nice meeting you. Hoping to meet you soon in person. :)That is all I can think of right now. Thanks for the A2A! :)

Why do people write such lengthy answers on Quora?

Question: How does the Hollow-point bullet injure the target?Answer1: Answer2: Story by an retired police officer who got hit by a Hollow-point during his service years and knows a thing or two about the bullet. He tells you how he got hit, what the bullet did to his body, and shares a picture of the wound.Question: How is the International Space Station powered?Answer1: Answer2: So, I was the one who worked on the engineering department which powered the International Space Station, and this is how I did it.Question: What laws in the Indian Penal Code are there against dowry?Answer1: Answer2: A housewife narrating the story of her struggle against dowry and how she brought those who mistreated her to justice. Now, think about it. In each case, which answer would one prefer?Standing at the 21st century, where we are just steps away from actually developing  J.A.R.V.I.S, one can easily search for the facts and figures mentioned in the first answers. You can easily buy a copy of the Indian Penal Code, and read articles about the International Space Station. In that respect, Quora would not be any different than the existing set of Q&A forums like Yahoo Answers or StackOverflow. What distinguishes Quora from those, and is the main reason behind it's success, is the community. Quora successfully integrated social media and information retrieval into a single unit. If it had not been for great stories from a poor guy who made it in life, to veterans surviving the war, from NASA astronauts to simple Indian housewives, one wouldn't even bat an eyelid about a new strictly factual Q&A site, with the existing list of competitors. Stories substantiate an answer, breathe life into it. Why else would people go and watch movies and read books when they already know that the protagonist is going to survive no matter how many times he's hit.Notice something. In all the examples, I didn't mention any question related to personal experience. If one were to include questions like,"How does it feel to lose both parents as a child?",I am pretty sure, a story by Batman has to provide for a better read than facts and figures about growing up with a lot of responsibilities.
