I Stammer And People Are Not Employing Me

I am a 24-year-old boy. I have a problem of stammering. Will any girl on this earth love me?

She liked me because even if I stutter a 1000 times while presenting my opinion in front of a crowd, I won't hesitate. I wasn't like an average stammerer who'd prefer to sit in a corner, scared to let anyone know about his speech defect. I was a guy who used to speak his heart even if I stammer a 1000 times while saying that and everyone used to appreciate me for this.In the end, it is not about your speech defect, it is about your confidence and skills that really matters.Bonus part:*How to control stammering?- Always have candy in your mouth.-Use hand gestures while speaking. It will divert your minds attention from your mouth towards your gesture.-Speak as much slow as you can.-Open your mouth as less as you can.Credits: My 18 years of stammering experience.Best of luck. :'D

I have a stutter, am I justified in beating people up who make fun of it?

That’s cute !Beat people until they die. Cause they might make fun again, if left alive.Actually there should be a law to punish people who make fun of stammerers. No ?As it is such a terrible crime. But then, what plans you have apart from beating people ?More you beat people, more they will come to know about your disability and more will make fun of you. Wow! You promoting your disability yourself.By that token you will have to take up this beating activity as full time job.Not bad!By the way, how you plan to overcome stammering ?By beating people ? Or by waiting for a miracle?Don’t you think it would be more fruitful if you save time and energy to focus on practicing to overcome your speech disability. Rather than beating people and inviting trouble. These fun-making-people are distractions. Ignore them. You need to focus on real. Real is what you can achieve with determination, practice and patience. Real is your struggle for stammer-free speech.Listen, I know what you mean. Can certainly relate and feel the embarrassment a stammerer takes in day to day life. But its not that pathetic as we make it look. Even we stammerers make fun of other people which we don't realize.I have a fat friend. Where ever he goes, people make fun of him. He goes aggressive sometimes and abuses. He sometimes get emotional and cry. But I never saw him taking initiative to work out and reduce fat. For that he has other excuses. I always feel he should flush out that anger in gym. But he chooses to do nothing and dreams to beat people. That’s easy I suppose. The thing is - you can change yourself but not people.People will remain people. They will always be there to make fun of you. Moreover, people don't consider stammering as a disability. They consider it as a bad habit. So they don't offer sympathy. And that's good. You should learn to be easy on people who make fun of you. Be sportive and take it as a challenge. Yes, it will take lots of endurance but this is the way you will overcome your social fears. Learn to embrace.

I stammer sometimes while speaking in front of a crowd. How can I solve this?

I stammer.A lot.I try to crack a joke and I can’t as the words are just stuck! I can’t even have proper conversations with people. As part of my course work, I have to give a lot of presentations and this always scares me. Constantly dreading about what people might be thinking. Will they laugh? Will they make fun of me?I have tried several methods on how to overcome this. They have worked for me most of the times. So, I guess I can try and help you out here.1) You are not alone, my friend. Remember this. There are always those who have been through what you are going through now. Statistics show that 1% of the world’s population stutter. That’s a lot, right?2) Let go of inhibitions. Do not think what the other people might think of you. What they think of you doesn’t define who you actually are. You probably wouldn’t even meet them again in your life.3) I advise you to practice the speech before hand (in front of a mirror worked for me the best). This gives you the potential areas where you would stutter and you can think of words you can replace the same with. For example, I stutter for words starting with sound ‘sa’ or ‘si’ and I have to use the word “simultaneously”, I would say “at the same time”. This would also build up your confidence and you’ll be more aware.4) You can also repeat the same in front of a small crowd (in front of your friends or family maybe), someone whom you are comfortable with. All this are simple hacks with which at least you can be 50-60% confident. The rest is what you do up there, on the stage. The cool thing is there are a few hacks there too.1) Pretend. Pretend that the room is empty. Pretend that you are reciting the speech to yourself. As you practised before in front of the mirror. (:-P)2) In case you stammer on stage, take a moment. Clear your throat or sip water. Better yet, pretend that you are thinking. Once you are back, excuse yourself and continue. This way people won’t even realize. (Think of them as fools :-P)3) They say that eye-contact is must. If it is a large crowd, then you need not look directly into the audience as that might be intimidating. Just look at few people’s forehead or maybe their hair. It goes unnoticed! (I do this every time)4) Try to find a familiar face in the crowd. (a friend, perhaps) Someone who cheers you up.I hope this helps. All the best!

Will a employer hire someone who stutters?

There's really two questions that need to be asked. Will they hire you and can they legally discriminate against you. Sadly, you may find an employer reluctant to hire you for a job that requires you to be talking to the public. And it may not even be because the employer is being discriminatory. It may be because they are certain that customers will be so uncomfortable around you that it will hurt sales or that because it takes you a little longer to get a sentence out this will impact business as well. Personally, if I came to your place of work and had to deal with you, I couldn't care less that you stutter. That's just me and hopefully most people feel that way. It may be up to you to convince a potential employer that the general public is not going to be as uncomfortable as the employer might think they are. Many jobs come with a probationary period and any decent employer should be willing to at least give you a chance for a three month period.

As for whether they can legally discriminate against you by not hiring you...If you are highly suspicious that you did not get the job because of your stutter, depending on where you live, you need to contact a labour board or a human rights commission and see what action you can take against the employer. Unless they can prove that you absolutely cannot perform the job, they have to consider your application equally to all the other applicants for the position. In some cases it is obvious, such as a quadriplegic in a wheelchair will not be able to do manual labour at a construction site and a blind person can't be a limo driver.

You might consider posting this question in People with Disabilities also as they may have better advice, especially about the legal issues.

Why do people criticize Obama for using a teleprompter?

I think the issue was not that he used the teleprompter, but that he was unable to discern that he was reading something intended for the other speaker.

Most of us would like to perceive our nation's leader as astute enough to think quickly and react with competence in the face of a small issue. If he can not think on his feet in that controlled situation, what will he do when a real crisis comes his way.

For me, it makes me feel terribly insecure that our "LEADER" could not stop himself from reading a 'thank you Mr. President' on the teleprompter.

At least, the last president was fast thinking and was able to quickly 'dodge' a shoe with a genuine smile and affable attitude. I shudder to think what this president would have done in that situation.

His stammering without the teleprompter is much preferred to his inability to actually 'think' about what he is reading.
