I Want To Be A Cop But Dont Like Their Reputation

Why do cops get such a bad reputation?

PLEASE……… DON’T……………… PROFILE………THE……… POLICE …..!!!!!I have not read any of the other answers to this so I apologize if I am guilty of repeating things.A human weakness is to try to categorize everything and everyone. When I joined the Marines I was told that the Corps had a reputation to live down as well as one to live up to. In a previous “Quora” answer, I related the incident of the two Marines in my barracks who were arrested for armed robbery. I had nothing at all to do with their crimes, but it added to the reputation that was up to me to try to live down. I doubt that the liquor store owners and employees who were robbed at gunpoint by these two creeps will ever feel the same about Marines as they did before their ordeal. If they can, my hat is off to them. All I could personally ever do to live up the positive reputation of the Marines (one that Marines before me earned time and again through dedication, honor and sacrifice) was to serve as best as I could, and to try to be worthy of the privilege of also being a member of the Corps. No two Marines are the same, no two cops are the same and (because) no two people are the same. Are there cops who are true heroes ??………..You bet there are !!Are there cops who are corrupt and dishonest ??……Same answer as above !! But I know for a fact that the good far-and-away outweigh the bad !!Marines are expected to be courageous and cops are expected to be reasonable and honest. It is when they do something OUT OF CHARACTER that the reputations of their organizations suffer. Remember the old saying “Dog bites Man is NOT news…………Man bites dog IS NEWS !!!When you find the PERFECT Marine, the PERFECT cop or the PERFECT man…..PLEASE let me know. Only one PERFECT man ever existed and they CRUCIFIED HIM !!!I am far from perfect now and I was far from perfect in the Marines and as a police officer. I made mistakes but I honestly did my best to live up to the BEST traditions of both organizations. You might not believe this but I know that it is true: No group of people dislikes bad cops any more than good cops do. Their misdeeds soil the reputation of us all and we have to listen to things like “WHY DO YOU COPS ALWAYS (………)”what ever. All cops are not the same……….all people are not the same !

Why do cops have a bad reputation?

I know there are some who've done horrible things, and maybe they've done more bad then I can understand because i haven't seen much. Ever since I was around 12(i'm 17 now) though I didn't understand this growing hatred of the police force.
*video of 1 cop doing something wrong with all the comments of the video spewing on their hatred of cops in general*
What about the TSA hatred too? Wouldn't you rather be frisked then risk having someone hide a gun in their pants?

Do cops have bad reputations as womanizers?

Do cops have bad reputations as womanizers? I have just met a guy that is a cop and I am wondering if I should date him or not because I don't want to have to deal with worrying about all that stuff. Everyone I have asked if it is true bout the bad reputations of cops say it is true.

How is the reputation of the police in Turkey?

Yeah. That's an old trick in Istanbul. Lucky you didn't get the full Turkish punch.Usually, they just drug you or hit you in the back of the head. Then steal your money.I wouldn't reckon on much police help.Organized crime is pretty common in that area and the police aren't all that geared towards solving crimes like that. Best learn your lesson and move on.Just don't judge the city too harshly. It's a good place for the wary and the people of Istanbul are... mostly... the best in the world. But, the Turkish police have... other interests and aren't well equipped to help wayward tourists. For one thing, they seemed to be very young. While living in Istanbul, I noticed many officers who appeared to be in their very early 20s or younger. There were plain clothes officers and uniformed sergeants who looked to be in their early to mid 20s.It should be noted that Turkey is a very political place. I recall a Kurdish protest near my apartment. While the protesters were no saints (throwing rocks and even Molotov cocktails towards the police lines), the police weren't much better.I've never smelled so much tear gas in my life and there was a veritable wall of rubber and, occasionally, real bullets. Hours and hours at a time for days. The kids in the neighborhood spent the morning scavenging empty CS canisters out of the gutters by the hundreds for souvenirs.Tensions between the Kurds and the Turks are old and complicated. But, I'll say this. I never saw real hatred until I witnessed those protests. These were people ready to kill and feel no pangs of remorse about it.And it wasn't just among the Kurds. It was there in the eyes of those policeman too. That seems to be the main purpose of the Turkish police in Istanbul-- to violently respond to violent acts of civil unrest. Certainly, they might chase a purse snatcher or lend a sympathetic ear, but I wouldn't count on them to recover your money. You could try. Avoid the large contingent near Gezi Park. That's riot police. There is another station a few blocks away on Tarlabasi. Should be plenty of English speakers there because of the immigration office. But, don't get your hopes up.If you are looking for English language advice, head to the James Joyce Irish Pub on Balo. Don't go anywhere else on that street without guidance, but the old pub is safe enough and regulars and staff should be a good source of advice.

Are police intimidated by gangster reputations?

Intimidated, Hell no. Scared, You would be crazy if you were not a little scared. Fear is a part of life, what you do with the fear is what makes the difference. If you push it to the side and stay level headed, you stand a much better chance than you do if you let the fear overcome you. Now, I am sure any cop with a family (or without one probably) will agree with this statement.. If push came to shove, that bastard(s) will be the one to go, let it be a righteous shooting or not. The saying is, "It is better to be judged by 12 than to be carried by six." I am going home to my wife and 2 girls at the end of my shift.

What is the reputation of Japanese Police Officers?

>Do they have better reputation than American Police Officers?

I can't compare because I don't know American cops.

>Do they have as many police brutality cases as their American counterparts?

I have never seen police brutality in my life.

>If they make a mistake, do they apologize to you like we so often see with Japanese people?

I have seen them apologizing, yes.

Some of them are cold. Cops at koban (police box on street) are not cold. But when I visit a police station, some cops there are cold. But police officers in general are good.

BTW, it's not true that Japanese cops take bribes from citizens. I have never given them bribes in my life.

Why do my parents not want me to become a police officer?

I would ask them because everyone is different, but let’s go through some of the more common objections parents have:*** IT’S A DANGEROUS OCCUPATION*** You will not be dealing with society’s finest, and this often entails violence. Police are often targeted for the uniform they wear, as well. Not only is it dangerous physically, but also socially. When you put on that uniform, you’re representing your entire department and occupation. If you make even an honest mistake, and someone sees, or even worse films it, you could lose your career and your reputation could be forever ruined. It’s a stressful occupation. Let’s say you are never shot at once, or ever have any serious confrontation on the job. That doesn’t take away the fact that being a police officer is stressful. You don’t know who’s Mr. Average Citizen and who’s Mr. Bad Guy. You could very well put away someone innocent or leave someone dangerous out on the streets if you’re not careful. Often times, you’ll be called in at the most inconvenient of times. Oh, and when you’re off-duty, you’re never truly off-duty because you are still expected to apprehend a criminal, even if you’re just shopping. There’s a negative stigma, especially these days. Hollywood and the Media definitely don’t help with this. A lot of people have positive views toward the police. Many do not. It’s one of those jobs that will definitely elicit a response, and often times that will be negative. This takes a toll on people, and it could very well bleed into your work performance. It would be a terrible thought that your son is looked down upon despite the fact that he is serving the community. It’s a terrible thought that your son will be chastised for having a badge. Not enough pay. Personally, I think most police departments pay their officers reasonably, averaging around 55k a year. They also more often than not have benefits including pensions. However, this is median income, for a high-stress, high-risk, and high-demanding job. You could make that money being a general manager for McDonalds, where you would almost never encounter someone shooting you.
