I Want To Write A Book About Gypsies . Need Help/ Info .

Who is the gypsy in the book night by Elie Wiesel?

The gypsy was in charge of Wiesel's barrack when they first arrived at Auschwitz. His father suddenly seized with colic and asked the gypsy politely where the lavatory was. Rather than help him, the gypsy hit his father with a violent blow. That was the first time Wiesel saw someone physically hit his father.

Do you like to read books? Write 2-3 lines about your favourite book.

Yes, I like to read books a lot. My favourite book is The Alchemist. The summary of the book is as follows:Santiago is a shepherd in the rolling hills of Andalucía. He loves his flock, but can't help but notice the limited nature of their existence. Seeking only food and water, they never lift their heads to admire the green hills or the sunsets. Santiago's parents have continually struggled for the basics of life, and have smothered their own ambitions accordingly. They live in beautiful Andalucía, which attracts tourists to its quaint villages and rolling hills, but for them it is no place of dreams. Santiago, on the other hand, can read and wants to travel. He goes into town one day to sell some of his flock, and encounters a tramp-king and a Gypsy woman. They urge him to 'follow his omens' and leave the world he knows. The Gypsy points him towards the Pyramids of Egypt, where she says he will find treasure. Crazily, he believes her. He sells his flock and sets sail. Sure enough, disaster is met early on when a thief in Tangier robs him of his savings. So much hard work and discipline for a little adventure! But strangely, Santiago is not devastated, apprehending a greater feeling - the security of knowing he is on the right path. He is now living a different life, in which every day is new and satisfying. He keeps reminding himself of what he was told in the market before he left:'When you want something, the entire universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.'

I want to adapt an old French comic book called "The Gypsy" into a feature-length Hollywood production like The Fifth Element. Do I start by submitting the script? What else can I do to generate enthusiasm for the project?

I suggest do not just submit the script. Prepare one page synopsis and submit the synopsis. Also per my experience you need to do much more than just to submit the work. You need to attach some elements to make it to look attractive in order to get an attention as let say a Director with awards, or a big star or both. Also if you have someone to make a script coverage it will help, but usually they do this just when they want to buy the project…

What countries hate gypsies?

Joel, this is a very difficult question to answer.Since you use the term Gypsies, I’m only going to refer to the Romani people. I am not addressing Irish Travellers, New Age travelers, or anyone else who is colloquially called Gypsies.Despite the fact that that Gypsies are immigrants in the United States, there is no collective hatred for them and in America’s great tradition, they are slowly being assimilated into American society. I emphasize the word slowly. It is somewhat similar in Great Britain. However, in other parts of Europe they are hated, discriminated against, segregated, brutalized, and in the Nazi Holocaust they were slated for genocide. As a Jew, I feel a certain affinity for them and their suffering. But, I do not let that stop me from writing about their crimes most of which are nonviolent. I am friends with a real police officer who is known as the Baro Ri (that translates to Big Cop, which is an honorary title rarely given police) among the Romani people and the Gypsy Hunter among law enforcement. I have written (in my fiction series, Beachside PD) about him and the crimes he has solved. One last thing I will share, I find it amusing that as a fiction writer who writes police/crime novels based on real events that I’ve become some sort of expert on Quora about the Romani people. Some of it is information he’s shared with me, but most of it is as a result of hard research both on the Internet and reading books about Gypsies. I have always treated them fairly in my novels and I’ve never stereotyped them.I hope that helps.

How would you describe the clothes of a gypsy?

Okay, so it's not actually a gypsy but the group of people are gypsy like. They live in these huge tents and sing and dance and stuff and they wear gypsy like clothing. I need some help on describing it....Like good descriptive words other than flowing and billowing....Thank you!

What are some full names for Gypsies (Roma)?

Well I can give you some name that I know :
Male gypsy names : Lolia, Stevo, Angelo, Boba, Colia, Kalo, Valodja...These are typical romane names, but you're right the Roma just take names of the culture around them so its hard to tell... we also use the name of the Bible a lot like Isaac, David, Moise... Gino is also very used.
Female gypsy names: Rupa, Jidovaika, Papin, Pabay, Lalya, Kali, Pabelin, Belin, Mumeli, Luludja, Ruza, ... Name that are often used not typically gypsies Dayana, Sissilia, Concha, Gina, Diamantka, Tanya, Julia, Jenna, Lyuba, Yovanka, Carmen...
Romane first names : demeter, kwiek, zotov, shishkov, yankovic... These are real names you can check it out some are famous singers... But i know it might not sound romian enough !
I tried to help but it's hard because some of the names we use are like really modern and won't fit your story at all and although my family is from Romania, Hungary, Russia etc, we live in Paris for around 2 or 3 generations now and we don't give Romanian names anymore... if your story is a little cliché and not that focused on gypsies just use typical Romanian names... Andrzej Niculescu sounds good to me but maybe you should write it down this way "Andrei" the letter i is i in Romanian, you should check it out !

Romanian first names : Mihaescu, Petrescu, Cioba, Anghel, Constantinescu, Gheorghiu, Floricel, Lupu, Moldoveanu, Munteanu, Petrescu, Rotaru, Tomescu, Guţă...

What language do Jamaican gypsies speak? How can I learn it?

There are always two sides to a story the truth and the fun-not so true part. Here's my take, you can decide which side it is.Growing up in Ja (90s baby), I always heard folklores of the Gypsies. Songs were made about them and I even had a popular high school best friend who could cuss you out in full “gypsy" and you would feel like she stabbed you in the neck even though you wouldn't understand a word.Is it a real language?Fun and joke aside. Gypsy is a real language spoken by a particular group of peoples (I can't remember where they're from). But in Jamaica, if they lived among us, they would certainly have integrated into our infectious society. Or we would have taken something from theirs and woven it into our culture. When I learnt gypsy:Back to jokes, I did know gypsy, even learnt how to write the secret language. No, there's a high possibility this language didnt originate from real Gypsies. It was by defiance and a need for secrecy in my early teens that I learnt this secret language. I couldn’t understand how such a secret coded language existed in school until I learnt in a few weeks just for fun with my friends. We would write coded messages with made up “letters” and symbols. For example, the letters “a, b and c” were written like this “5°, II, °Ɔ”. As a teen I’d write in my journal like this.I lost the codeBefore leaving high school, I wrote a list of the alphabet so that I wouldn't forget it. Unfortunately, that book is no where to be found. So, I only go by memory. Sometimes I visit my parents home and in old books, I’d find messages I wrote in ‘gypsy’. I still understand them, though I forgot a few letters.
