What's it like to work at IBM?
IBM today is not the same company I joined 30 years ago. Back then, it was the white knight of the industry. Above reproach, and always most concerned with doing the right thing for customers and for its employees. Benefits were superb, layoffs were unheard off and no customer was ever allowed to fail. IBM always made things work.That led to a lot of success. And fiercely loyal employees.But times changed. The company changed. (it changed most of all while I was gone)Now, it's mostly just another big company. It still tries to do the right thing, most of the time, but the quarterly results are more important. Layoffs? Sure, if that's what it takes. Cut benefits? Sure, if that's what it takes. Implement policies that suggest that employees can't be trusted? Sure, if that's what it takes.IBM STILL has an amazing pool of talent, and a vast portfolio of patents and innovations, that matter. And it does amazing things all the time. (Watson Jeopardy Challenge (February 2011) being a great example) But it's not the same.It is still a safe place to work and a great place to get experience, but it's not the white knight it once was. On balance worth working at but not head and shoulders above the rest any more. Which is why retention is a growing problem, in my view.
