If Minimum Wage Was $11 An Hour And Those Working Would Have Welfare Cut In Half Automatically

Why can't the people on welfare work?

I'm a teen mom and have been on Welfare one time. I had been out of work for almost a month when I finally had to apply because my money was running out and I wasn't able to get a job. I spent over 60 hours each week filling out applications and submitting my resume. Before I applied and continued after I got on it. I was on it for 3 weeks and made sure the day after I got my employment information that I submitted it to the state to have it stopped. Welfare doesn't automatically mean you're lazy and neither does being a teen mom. If you can only get a job making $8 an hour you must not have a degree. I work 40 hour weeks and go to college. I pay daycare and and can usually only afford the basics for myself but I make sure to give every extra bit I have toward getting my daughter the things she needs and often the things she just wants. I do agree though that there are far too many lazy people on welfare and having children they can't afford. But please don't lump teen mothers and people on welfare in the same low life group you see in some people.

What would happen if $22 was the minimum wage in the US?

Prices for goods and services would go up commensurately. If you have to pay 22.00 for someone in a job that is only worth 8.00, then you have to charge more and hire fewer people. This is already happening in places that are targeting a 15/hr minimum wage such as Seattle, California (and San Francisco in particular), and in New York to a degree. With such a large wage, other wages must also rise, or those jobs which can be off-shored will be off-shored.For example, if you pay a barista 22/hr, is the desktop support technician with an associate’s degree and 20 grand in college debt going to accept 22/hr for very long? No. How about the junior Java and PHP and C# developers who are currently making 22–25/hr with bachelor’s degrees? Or those with associate degrees that are making 20–23/hr to start in most cities? A national minimum wage of 22/hr is going to push their starting salaries up to about 30/hr, which those positions aren’t worth. Thus, where possible, those jobs will be pushed overseas and you’ll have MORE people making the 22/hr minimum wage (but now with college degrees) and a higher unemployment rate.It will ALSO mean that most of those people in the minimum wage jobs had better be worth the 22 bucks an hour. And sticking around. Which means that, just like in the recession, minimum wage jobs will be held by older people who now cannot get good jobs in their fields, and that will choke out those with no experience and aren’t as likely to stay with the job full time. Meaning your high school and college students won’t be able to get those jobs. You’ll see youth unemployment rate approaching those of European countries:Reality check: Youth unemployment in the eurozone has been stuck between 19% to 25% for the past eight years. In Spain and Greece, it's north of 40%.For comparison, youth unemployment in the U.S. is just below 10%.(Europe's lost generation: Young, educated and unemployed)We could be Greece, where almost half of the population under 25 cannot get a job.

What's the incentive for people to get off welfare? If anything, shouldn't we should all apply?

Ideas on how to stop welfare card abuse?

Any ideas on how to stop welfare card abuse? How do we stop people from using their cash benefits on drugs or alcohol? How do we stop them from selling their food benefits for half the price in exchange for cash? New policies restrict the use of the debit cards in places like casinos and strip clubs but they still can withdraw money and use it on whatever they want. This money is supposed to be for necessities.
