Why does my computer keep randomly freezing? How can I fix it?

By “freezing” I infer that the inquiry is about a computer that is hard-locking.Hard-locking is different from a soft-lock or spontaneous restart.A soft-locked computer can still be brought to control by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL. This often occurs when an application is running but becomes non-responsive. Sometimes this is a memory management problem from the stopped app.A spontaneous restart is usually power related. It may not be the power supply itself, but too heavy a burden placed on an under-powered power supply unit (PSU) for the computer, based on the particular CPU, video card, number of hard drives, etc.Hard-locking means that the computer will not respond to keyboard presses at all and the last frame remains on the screen. This can often happen during gaming. The only things that change this hardlocked status is depressing the Power button and holding it for up to ten seconds. This shuts down the computer to allow for restarting or rebooting.Depressing the Power button is better than turning off the switch on the power supply abruptly, at the back of the computer, especially if you have mechanical hard drives.Try dusting out the inside of your computer with canned air.It sounds like CPU overheating is the problem and dust can often exacerbate marginal or insufficient cooling conditions. If the fan on the CPU has slowed remarkably, that could be the culprit. The bearings of CPU fans eventually wear down over time, some lasting longer than other, cheapy fans.If it’s a relatively new computer and the CPU cooling is known to be sufficient, the BIOS settings for overclocking could be too high (that is, if the computer is overclocked) and the CPU is overheating from an inadequate cooling solution.

How do I fix a computer screen that stays black when I switch the PC on?

I’m going to assume that the PC turns on when you hit the power button. If not could be loose power cables.First thing is to test that the cable and the monitor are both working. Make sure the monitor is plugged in, if it is not then plug it in and give it another test. If it is then hook it up to another PC or anything else that should output a picture and you know is working. If that is not working try a different cable. If it still is not showing a picture you likely have a dead monitor but test both of those cables on a different monitor and ensure that they work. If the monitor does work after switching cables then you probably have a dead cable. If you get it working with the new cable then switch back to the problem PC with this cable and hopefully it should work now. If the cables both work then try a different monitor on the problem PC and hopefully that will work. If the original monitor and cable were both working on a different PC then you might have a bad port on your GPU/MOBO depending on if you are using integrated graphics. If you’re not and your CPU supports integrated graphics, pull your GPU out and test using the integrated graphics as your GPU might be dead. If it works it is your GPU. If it doesn’t it is probably your MOBO.If you are already using integrated graphics and there is another output like HDMI try that, if that doesn’t work it could probably be your MOBO. But to check that disconnect everything except power from the MOBO and pull out the RAM, you can leave the CPU in though and check if you Post. If you do, slowly reconnect everything one at a time starting with RAM until you don’t Post and the last thing you reconnected is most likely your problem.I hope this monster of an answer helps you in some way.

My computer will boot but won't load the homescreen. It only shows a black screen with only the mouse visible. What is the problem?

Please try this.Start tapping immediately on F8 key as soon as you power on your computerKeep tapping until you see pre boot menu optionsTry it one more time if you miss it and go to blank screen with the mouse pointer on itOnce you see those options, select "Safe mode with networking" (You can use arrow keys on your keyboard to select/higlight it and hit "Enter"It will let your computer boot in safe mode (Icon might appear bigger, but that's normal)Go to "Start" > "All programs" > "Accessories" > "System tools" > "Disk cleanup"Hit "Ok"it will scan and bring the list of junk files on your screencheck all the boxes except "Recycle bin" and hit "Ok"It will remove all junk data from your computerRestart the system normallyif it does not work, select "Last Known Good Configuration" from same Pre boot menu options. (It will restore your system to most recent backup, but you might lose some data)or you can try this "Go to Safe mode with networking" and click on "Start"a box will appear underneath "All programs"type "MSCONFIG" and hit "Enter"click on the third tab "Startup", it will come up with all services that load when you boot your computer each timeUncheck all boxes and reboot your computer (it might prompt for it)now if your issue is resolved, check all the boxes one by one, and see which service is causing this issue. uncheck the box which is causing this issue, it might take some time but you can resolve this issue this way.

My laptop turns on but the screen is black. What do I do to fix it?

Other answers have jumped to a hardware fault. Perhaps not incorrectly, sure. But I'd first make sure we're not dealing with a software issue, or any other "have you tried turning it off and back on again?" sort of things.First, and foremost, does your laptop have a "Display Off" button? I have a Sony Vaio which has one of these. It's a flush bezel button near the clamshell hinge. I have absolutely no fucking clue why it's there. But it is. The only thing I can think of is it's a "privacy" button...for when you can't quite hit the (x) close button on the browser window when your spouse walks in on you ogling (.)'s.Since you didn't post a picture I will assume that you mean the screen is entirely black. No faint glow, no nothing? In other words, it doesn't look even remotely like this [note the blinking cursor]:Have you plugged anything new into your laptop recently? A new USB device? A new external drive? Do you have a docking station? If you have a docking station, does it behave differently if on or off of it?Have you verified that your battery is charged, and that even if not, your power supply is providing proper charging to the battery when it's plugged in? My laptop has a little lightning-bolt LED that indicates the power supply is properly plugged in. Sometimes those stupid connectors can become loose -- or worse, crimped [kids knocking the thing about, etc.] -- so that they don't make a proper connection. I can't tell you how many times I've sat down with my laptop that had been "plugged in" for hours only to hit the power button, see it appear to go through its start-up groans, only to have it fizzle-out and not work shortly after.Do you have a recovery disc for the OS you have installed? What happens if you turn the power on with that in the laptop?Do you have a USB memory stick? If so, there are a bunch of different things to try here Boot and run Linux from a USB flash memory stick, even booting DOS from it.

Can I keep any files on my second monitor?

If you leave the computer on and just switch the monitor off, nothing will happen to the files.

The files aren't on the monitor, they are on the computer.

Power button on pc is red, monitor wont come on?

I am trying to help my mom solve a continuing problem with her pc. She has an old gateway desktop pc and a newer sony monitor. Now, every time she leaves the computer running but not in use, the computer goes on standby. And then the power button on the tower will turn red instead of green, and the power button on the monitor will flash off and on, and the screen will not respond. All she does to fix it is turn it off and leave it for a while, and then it comes back on. However I would like to find a permanent fix for this. Can anyone give me any ideas of how to fix it, or what the problem would be? Thank you.
