Why are a lot of Asians skinny even though they eat rice?

The same reasons the French are slim even though they eat rich, fatty foods.It's not about what you eat.  It's about the lifestyle you lead.Garrick Saito has one part of the answer, which is portion control. The average meal size here in the US is at least 30-50% larger than they are in say, Paris, Tokyo, or Bangkok.  Sometimes it's double that.The other reason is the amount of exercise they get.  By that I don't mean going to the gym to work out.  Consider that most of the time here in the US, we sit motionless while we drive in our cars to get around town. Contrast that with the average person in the places I mentioned above.  If you live in a nice location within those cities, that means that you could reach a subway station in around 10 minutes. If not, that means a longer walk, or a bicycle ride to the station. Then consider the remaining walk to work, and the many flights of stairs you may have to climb to reach the train platform.  That's a lot of burned calories.

anyway, we eat it in moderation with food that contain less fat, ie: we don't add butter, cheese, sour cream or other fattening things. usually, we eat rice with veggies and meat and the ingredients are usually just the usual condiment with some spices and herbs.

i've been trying to not eat rice as much as I use too eversince I heard rice makes you fat.

Why do Asians eat so much rice?

Because carbs aren't as bad as everyone makes out..its entire food intake of the day that counts you could eat chocolate bars and still be skinny!

This whole carb thing is just a new way to get people to go crazy over dieting

How do asians eat so much white rice and stay thin?

Basically our habits of eating.

Like when I was a kid my parents always told me to peel the skin and fat off and eat the meat only. We even try to use less oil and sauce in our foods at home. We don't go out to fast foods that much but our traditional moms can cook healthy home meals. We eat a combo of protein, greens, and carbs all together for dinner.

There are a lot more but I tell ya these habits do make a difference. =]

Why do asians eat rice and westerns eat bread?

Traditional cuisines are based on what that culture could get their hands on before exportation. Rice was grown in places like Asia due to the humid, wet climate. Bread was common in European places as European climates (which can differ but by western I tend to think more of western Europe in this sense so including Netherlands, Germany etc) as wheat to make flour was easier to grow than rice. Traditional cuisine also tends to coincide with the climate of the country. Europe can be very cold especially when you're getting into places like Scandinavia/the Arctic Circle (Sweden, Iceland, Greenland etc) and Russia which can be extremely cold bread tends to be very warming and hearty (rice is too but not as much) so Europeans needed filling, warming foods especially in places like Russia where before industrilisation fruits and vegetables were difficult to grow due to the cold terrain. In Asia it's very humid and hot and the kind of climate where you feel like salad vegetables, seafood and light food. Rice is filling but you don't eat 4 mouthfuls and feel warm and full it's much lighter than bread.

That's just my theory - I could be wrong.

Why are Asian people always so skinny?

I live in Thailand and yes 95% of the population are so called skinny.It is not just Thailand but most parts of Asia where the people are like this.For a start the food they eat in general is alot more healthy than Europe and America because they don't like to eat the fatty foods like crisps,burgers,pizza,sweets,bread and all the rest which is so well advertised in many parts of the world.Most fast food companys in Asia don't even advertise on the tv etc because the people won't eat it anyway whilst in Europe and America they already have the people hooked every day and can afford to throw advertising in your face as much as they want.An Asian diet would normally consist of Fruit,vegetables,meat and rice even from childhood so why would they start eating burgers,microwave and oven foods in later life and at 3 times the cost of their usual diet? This is why they are so much healthier and less in weight,because they have a better diet and don't fall for the lame advertising that we should be eating pizza and burgers everyday!

How do asian celebrities stay skinny?

How do asian celebrities stay SO skinny? I mean, the culture's staple food is white rice, and that makes most people GAIN weight, yet so many asian (japanese, korean, chinese) celebrities are VERY skinny. How do I get that skinny?
