If The Earth Had A Mythological Name What Would It Be

What is the name of the person who is holding the earth?

I concur with Luis that the figure is Atlas. However, the idea that he his holding the earth up is relatively new—I believe it was a Renaissance image. In Greek Mythology he was holding up the sky, not the earth. He was standing in North Africa, where the modern Atlas Mountains are.Atlas is a Titan, and when Herakles was on his 11th Labor he needed Atlas’ help to get the Apples of the Hesperides, which were kept by Atlas’ daughters. Atlas convinced Herakles to hold up the sky and went to get the apples, but when he returned with them he decided to leave Herakles doing the work. In one of the few clever things that Herakles ever did he managed to trick Atlas into taking the burden back “for a moment while I adjust my lion skin to be a pad on my head.” Of course, then he left Atlas and took the apples away.Another time when Perseus was returning home with the Gorgon’s head he showed it to Atlas, who was therefore turned into stone, of which the Atlas Mountains are the remains.

If you could give the Earth a totally new name, what would you name it?

Descriptive names are fraught, because we have shown the ability to change the look and character of our orb (frequently for the worse).Mythological names are also problematic, in that you have to pick one mythology out of many, which is too exclusionary for a Home Name for ALL who dwell here. For myself, I would fall back on a variation on the numbers game, using the customary “dead languages” rule. To my ear:Tertius (for our solar system, that’s simple and works, at least for those using the Latin alphabet!)[And we can still call ourselves TERRANS! Huzzah! Just avoid Terts, Terns, or Terries!]Tertius II for the Moon.If/when we expand to OTHER stars, we would need to start using star system names, thus:Sol Tertius would be Earth.Sol Tertius II for the moon. And so, in order, we would end up being a solar system of:Sol Primus (Mercury)Sol Secundus (Venus)Sol Tertius (Earth)Sol Tertius II (Moon)Sol Quartus (Mars)Sol Quartus II(Deimos)Sol Quartus III (Phobos)Sol Quintus (Jupiter)Sol Quintus II (through whatever) Jupiter’s Moons. Considering the number of moons the Gas Giants have, there may be a more complex system needed when people colonize/exploit them.Sol Sextus (Saturn) With associated moons as with Jupiter.Sol Septima (Uranus) With etc.Sol Octavus (Neptune)Sol Nona (Pluto) -Sorry… I still consider it a planet, not a ‘dwarf’.If we can still refer to Eastern and Western Hemispheres… [hint]And etc. for anything we find out there that would need a separate designation.Asteroids and Comets would take a different nomenclature.[edited to make the Numeration of satellites uniform.]

Does anyone know the name of the mythological turtle that carries the earth on it's shell?

The Chinese traditionally see the tortoise as a supporter of the world, its four feet being the four corners of the earth. I believe its name was the Black Warrior.

In Hindu tradition, the world rests on the back of an elephant, a male solar symbol, which in turn stands upon a tortoise, in this case a feminine lunar symbol. Sorry, don't know the name for that.

The Iroquois of North America believe that they are descended from a turtle that rid itself of its shell, and that the earth sits on the back of the Great Turtle.

You can also check the link below for an interesting creation myth of the Native Americans.

It does not seem like much, but hopefully that will get you started on your research. Good luck.

Is earths real name Terra firma?

No. The official name denoted by the International Astronomical Union (the internationally recognized group which names bodies in space) for our planet is Earth. This is the name in English. Other countries and cultures would have their own name but it would still mean Earth in english language.

Earth is (besides the dwarf planet Sedna) the only planet in the solar system, whose name is not derived from the Greek or Roman mythology, the origin of the now used form of naming comes from the Anglo-Saxon word ertha or ertho, and the Dutch aerde. The word meant ground, soil, and Earth since it was not known until the 16th century that our planet was one of many. The word changed to Eorthe or Erthe in Old English and to Erde in German. Derived from the ancient German goddess or goddesses Erdi (Erda) or Nertheus. In Norse mythology, Earth was the son of Nott and Annar.

Other names of Mother Earth come from the
Earth goddesses: Hertha, Jörd, Fjörgyn, Hlödyn, Gaia or Gaea (Greek), and Tellus (Roman).
The Iroquois name for Mother Earth is Etenoha, the Lakota call her Ina Maka.

Is Tolkien's Middle-earth supposed to be our own Earth in mythical times, or is it a different place?

Tolkien had expressed regret that many civilizations had great mythological traditions, while his own English culture did not. His entire literary work can be seen as an attempt to build such a mythological history. Middle Earth is simply a translation of a Middle English term for the world. From Tolkien's letter No. 165:’Middle-earth’, by the way, is not a name of a never-never land without relation to the world we live in (like the Mercury of Eddison). It is just a use of Middle English middel-erde (or erthe), altered from Old English middengeard: the name for the inhabited lands of Men ’between the seas’. And though I have not attempted to relate the shape of the mountains and land-masses to what geologists may say or surmise about the nearer past, imaginitively this ’history’ is supposed to take place in a period of the actual Old World of this planet.

According to Hindu mythology, the Arabian sea is called Ratnakara. What's the other seas’ names according to Hindu mythology?

The very word “Ratnakara” means a house of the gems, and since a few of the gems, like the coral and pearl are found in the seas, the word Ratnakara is synonymous with the seas. It is not specifically used for the Arabian sea.Like wise, the sanskrit literature mentions the earth as “ratnagarbhaa”, since many other gems are found deep inside the earth. So, whole of the earth is called by this name, and not some specific part of the same. The hindu mythology does not have any names of the seas that may coincide with the present names of the seas and oceans. Most of the hindu mythology was written in areas away from sea, in the Indo Gangetic plains, or in the Himalayas, and hence it has fictional depiction of the seas, as like the seas made of salt, milk, honey, clarified butter, sugarcane juice etc. There is a concept of seven seas, but the same are circling each other, and are in present in the form as they are on earth.Other names like the Sindhu, Payodhi, Mahodadhi, etc are common names, and are used for every sea. They cannot be used for some specific sea. The knowledge of the seas was such poor that the hindu mythology states that there was some mare, by the name of Badwaa, in the sea, or fire that ate away all of the waters. This might be for the evaporation of the seas that forms clouds, but still it is only to show that indians knew less about the marine life and geography.

Who was the first man on Earth according to Hindu mythology? (just like Adam according to Christians)

There are several answers to this question from the Hindu Sacred Scriptures both the Shrutis and the Smrutis. No one knows for sure as there is no direct answer to this . Most commonly believed by Hindu “Scholars” is the first person to be set foot on earth is “Manu”.Now as per Islam , Christianity and Jewish Religious Scriptures the first man on earth was Adam (peace be upon him). Now this does not match with Hindu Scriptures and Mythology. How can we reconcile this ?Now let us analyse who is Manu? where are the origins of Manu. Many of the Hindu Scholars believe Manu is a actually MAHA- NOOH, meaning the great Nooh , Who is Nooh ? Nooh (peace be upon him) is one of messenger of Almighty Allah , Nooh is also pronounced as Noah in the Christian and Jewish Scriptures. If we reconcile that Manu and Nooh is same , then the hindu beleif that he was the first person on the earth is misplaced. What could be the reason for this misplaced notion ?All three scriptures Torah, Bible and Quran talks about the great flood which wiped out the generation in times of Noah and only a few people were saved who were righteous and have embarked upon the ship of Noah , known as the Ark. After the flood and rains subsided , which lasted for 40 days and night while major portion of the earth was submerged in water Noah set foot on earth and then from him and his offsprings the humanity followed , he is also known as the second Adam of the world. I think this is closest we can go to reconcile the difference between the Hindu Scriptures and Other scriptures on this subject . Allah knows the best .I hope I have been able to give you a satisfactory answer.
