If You Had A Felony Can You Become A Doctor

Can a felon become a doctor?

Hi i was hoping someone might have some helpful information for me regarding whether or not it is possible for someone to become a doctor if they have felonies. When I was 17 I soled cocaine to an undercover cop and subsequently received 4 felonies. I have since been to rehab and have been clean for almost 2 years now and am back on track with my life, however it has always been my dream to practice medicine but one of my friends recently informed me that he did not believe i would be able to receive a license with my criminal record. I am hoping and praying that this is false but any useful information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jay

Felony college becoming a doctor?

I used to have a say in hiring and promotions for the US Government. I was not the final say, I was a little cog but my voice was listened to.

For all it is worth, admittedly very little, here is my take:

If I looked at your file and saw a felony I would continue reading it. I wouldn't round file it immediately. (If it really was a robbery with a weapon involved I might round file it.). If I understand you correctly it might look something like this. A kid out of high school with little or no direction commits a burglary or some similar crime. This kid gets caught and does his time. He gets out and decides he has to make some serious changes in his life. Starts College, ends up sticking it out for 8 years or so. He graduates with a Medical Degree. And, he wants to intern in my hospital. If that is what I found in your file, I would definitely interview you. At that point, your appearance, poise, personality as well as all things medical would be on trial but the teenage felony would be a non-issue if I decided to interview you. In fact, if I was satisfied that I knew what the crime was and how you handled the situation, it probably wouldn’t even come up in the interview.

I can't say how others would view it but a medical degree after a felony would indicate to me that something has changed in your life. You could be, and probably are a different person after college than before prison.

I will have to tell you though. If drugs started missing you would be on the top of my suspect list. Sorry but that is real world to me. BTW, the only way your coworkers would know about your status is if you told them. They would NEVER hear it from me, even if I had to fire you for cause.

Well sir, that's one opinion. Like I said, I can't speak for others...

I wish you the best and hope these words might put some perspective on a very complex issue.

Can you become a doctor if you have a felony?

Yes— if you are accepted by a medical school, and granted a license by a state’s licensing board. I suspect that medical schools that have fewer applicants are more likely to take a person with a felony— and I suspect that states with physician shortages are more likely to license a person with a felony. The other issue is that doctors apply to the DEA for ‘registrations’ that allow prescribing of controlled substances; it may be more difficult for a person to get a DEA registration if he/she has a felony related to narcotics.

Can a felon become a doctor?

If we’re equating a doctor to a physician, as we often do in North America, then the answer is theoretically yes. It may be difficult given that medical schools often screen out people who have committed a felony. But they are not required to do so.However, a felon is unlikely to receive a medical license. That being said, there are some fields in medicine that do not require a medical license. I know of a pathologist who committed a felony (either before, during, or after his time in medical school). He continues to work as a pathologist. A medical license is only necessary to prescribe medication. Because pathologists don’t do that, a felony on your record would probably not interfere with your ability to do your job, as it would if you were a general practitioner, for instance. So, while it would be difficult, it is theoretically possible.Hope that helps answer your question.Dr. Paul

Can you still become a doctor if you have been arrested before?

No convictions and one felony (No jail. Just one year probation. Plead no contest because of the situation and my respect for the law. A bag of coke was found empty in the back on my back of my car. Since it was my car, I assumed responsibility for it "being" in my car, NOT mine. POT was also found with the coke (felony poss.). That was in 2005. I was on great behavior and was terminated of my probation early. I did a lot of volunteer work on my own, not required of the state. I moved from my old town to a new city in 2008 and began my higher education. I have been a A/B student ever since I arrived. My Philosophy in life changed and grew. I am on the President's List, Deans List, 2 Honors societies, Master Student for my college for 6 semesters, I've been recognized as one of the top 80 students in my city in 2010, as well as an employee for my university (as an educator, master tutor ( I tutor over 20 subjects and have won awards for it!)))

Can a you become s TSA officer if you have had a felony?

Insofar as the TSA is a federal agency you’d be best advised to look into the job qualifications for the position. You could start here. TSA Careers and Airport Security JobsIf you do suffer from a felonious past you’d be best advised to look into the relevant procedure to mitigate said record. some states have provision to reduce felonies to misdemeanors or other methods of mitigating the conviction or expunging it. This may or may not help but you’d have to consult with competent counsel to see what you options are. At the minimum, you should have successfully completed the terms of your parole or probation to even have a chance at consideration for ANY law enforcement job. Be forewarned, the odds are likely against you.

How long do I have to wait after a felony conviction to become a trucker?

Depends on what the felony was for but to be honest, your going to have a hard time getting hired anywhere in the industry because of security issues generated by client security guidelines. Not saying it's impossible, just saying it's going to be an uphill battle. If you can get someone in the industry to vouch for you it will help a lot.Had a family friend who spent 25 years locked up for murder, couldn't get hired anywhere until my dad vouched for him and got him in hauling corn syrup.Still running to this day for the same company. Best employee they got.Unfortunately forgiveness on criminals is a tough thing, not right but it is what it is.
