An Inspector Calls by J.B Priestley?

I have few questions to ask:-

1) What do the historical references particularly those made by Mr Birling contribute to act 1?

2) Describe the similarities and differences in the treatment given to Eva Smith by Mr. Birling and her daughter.

3) Describe the character of Gerald Croft.

4) What are all the ironies in act 1?

Thanks ppl!!

What is a good interpretation of the book "An Inspector Calls" by J. B. Priestley?

it was released post war- it was promoting socialism and social responsibility and that the class system should help one another instead of following a capitalist structure that causes death poverty and stigma

No. Priestley did not die until 1984, and copyright subsists for 70 years after the end of the year of death. Therefore all of Priestley's works will lapse into the public domain on 1 January 2055.

"An Inspector Calls" by J.B. Priestley is full of lies and deceit....?

"An Inspector Calls" by J.B. Priestley is full of lies and deceit. Write fully about the way Priestley exposes weakness and wickedness, not only in the characters on stage, but also in society." is my essay question. I've written about a few points, but I'm running out. Any more points I can write about???

Why am I getting so many questions on Quora about the play "An Inspector Calls"? The questions are obviously related to homework. Is this play required reading in British schools?

Yes, in certain schools/colleges it’s part of the GCSE curriculum. He’s the character Denise Fox from EastEnders reading it on a bus just before it crashed in January 2017.Here she is on her course with the book on the desk. Here she is in the hospital recovering from exhaustion holding the book. She passed out during the exam, which she retook a few months later and passed.I wouldn’t normally remember minor details like these, but seen as J.B. Priestley (author/playwright/broadcaster) is from my city and there’s a statue of him outside the National Science and Media Museum just down the road, seeing a book of his most famous play on TV is quite memorable, especially for a proud Bradfordian like me.

How is dramatic irony used by J.B. Priestley in 'An Inspector Calls'?

Thank you for the A2A.I’m afraid my answer will be of little help, as it’s this:How is dramatic irony used by J.B. Priestley in ‘An Inspector Calls?”’Answer: Pretty effectively.Look, this is Literature. I’m guessing you have an essay to write, hence the question, but I’d be doing you no favours by writing it for you.Literature demands a two-way relationship. You as reader or audience need to interact with the text, not just react to it. Make the text your own by reading and questioning.I’ll give you a starter, however, that might be more help.Consider that the play was set in England in 1912. What events immediately follow this date?Consider that the play was first performed in 1945/6 - which means that most of the audience would have known precisely what was to come after 1912 - whilst of course the characters would not.And now in the light of the above, reread Mr Birling’s first main speech to the family gathered to celebrate Sheila and Gerald’s engagement. What effect might this have on the audience of 1945/6?You might, along the lines of making the play your own, like to consider your own context. From your viewpoint of your here and your now, does this say anything about you and the society in which you live? And a hint - if it does not have such relevance, then for you the text has no merit or real meaning. Cast it into the fire.If it does, however, then - congratulations! By interacting with the text on a personal level, you have confirmed the play as Literature, and yourself as a literary critic.Enjoy!

What are some hidden themes in “An Inspector Calls” by JB Preistley?

Thank you for the question. What are some “hidden themes” in “An Inspector Calls? (You might want to check the spelling of Priestley, BTW.)The key one, not really hidden, is responsibility. Which characters take responsibility for their actions? And, implicitly, do you think that Eric took responsibility for his homework? Had he done so, he might have learned an important lesson…

In An Inspector Calls, what is the mood in the start of the play? How does it change?

The mood id say is very happy, everyone at the dinner table is getting what they want, but you could also argue that there is tension - for example Eric drinks a fair amount of alcohol because of what he did to Eva. Throughout the play all of the secrets unwind, and suddenly you see a divide between Sheila and Eric and their parents Arthur and Sybil. Sheila and Eric begin to take responsibility for their actions, whereas Arthur and Sybil do not. This is the divide between socialists and capitalists.
