How does one become a special education teacher in Maine? I already have a BA in history.

One needs to have a degree in teaching, is one way. Another way, which is the way I did it, is to take methods courses as well as courses such as The exceptional child in the classroom. And a host of other courses. A great resource would be the Maine Department of Education, Certification office which will likely direct you to fill out an application. Upon reception of this they will send back an analysis identifying the courses needed to teach Special Sducation. This will cost $50 to apply, and may vary depending on grade level and specific disabilities. For example Specializing in Behavior for working in 3rd grade may differ from Functional Life Flills (FLS) in high school. Good luck the work is rewarding and can change lives.

I would like to become a Special education teacher in California. I have a BSC in Early child development and MS in sociology from India. Please help?

I have not been a te in CA. However, I do know that you have to pass a certification exam in the state of CA in order to be eligible before you apply.Special Education Teaching CredentialAbove is a link that describes the certification exam and may give you additional information on what is necessary to become a CA certified teacher. You would then need to decide if you wanted to teach mild, moderate, severe, and which grades. Those are all different certifications. I would also suggest contacting your previous school, and set up a meeting with a counselor in the special education department

What is the best gift for a special education teacher?

I live in California and its only been the past two years that my daughters haven’t had the same teacher for more than a year, when my oldest was an infant we had an infant teacher come out to our house every week, for 3 years than we had a preschool teacher for 2 years then the same teacher for 3 years until she moved then an older group and then the same teacher, for 3 years and move on all the way to high school like that. It was hard each time on her to say goodbye I would drive her by the old schools to say Hi and it only took one or two times for her to be OK with not being in the class anymore. Now since there is no county education and its done through the districts here, the kids have new teachers every year and a new aid every year. To teach the kids that transitions happen.

Thinking of becoming a Special Education teacher?

I am a spec ed teacher

It is easier to get a job in spec ed, than regular ed for sure, most reg ed teachers have to sub for a few years after they graduate. But don't make that your determining factor. The response above listed many good choices.

The highest demand area is speech pathology. Schools are HURTING for them. The problem is that when they graduate, they all go into private practice or work in hospitals ergo.. they can make lots more money. Speech paths in schools are over worked and have huge case loads plus they don't get paid as much as those in private practice.

The education is similiar to what reg ed teachers do, you just eork with a different population of kids

Working conditions:
lots of paperwork

weekends and holidays off, with the occcasional snow day thrown in.
June, July, and August off (though in the future this may change if systems to to some form of year round school)

I work 8-3:30/4, my sister, who is an engineer works 9-6, no summers and a few vacations days a year

If you ever get married and have kids, for the most part you will have the same days off, no day care, no babysitter

Teachers generally get good benifits and the is a decent amount of JOB SECURITY in Spec Ed. My sister has already sweated out two rounds of cutbacks, buyouts, and layoffs, who know if more are on the horizon

UPDATE: In 16 years I have never been slapped, hit, or spit at. Yes you have to be patient, but any teacher does. Any kid special ed or regular can have a bad day. Professionalism, means that you don't yell at kids because if what they do. If you have a good repor and classroom management those things will not happen often. Extreme bad behaviors do happen, but only with the moderate to intensive populations.

Do special ed teachers earn more than general ed teachers?

OMG....

Putting money aside... As a parent I would LOVE to have you as my childs principal if you were educated in special education as many principals seem to not know what an IEP is and therfore do not even have their teachers READ nor put them in place....

Again, I am only speaking from my personal experience of 3-4 school coorporations...which is more than unexceptable...but yay for you....and yay for the children's lives that you will touch that are involved in special education as you will be a principal that will know the laws !!!

YOU SHOULD GET MORE $$$$

Why do special education teachers make more money?

As the other answers have said, in most places in the US, they don't. Each district has a salary schedule which tells how much each teacher will make based on their years of experience and their level of education. This schedule is used for every teacher in the district, Kindergarten through high school, general ed and special ed. The difference in pay would be if perhaps more special ed teachers have higher degrees (I think it may sometimes be required of them). Teachers with a Masters degree make a few thousand dollars more than those with just a Bachelors. The exception would be if a special ed opening is classified “hard to fill.” This designation basically says that we can't get anyone to take this job, so we need to offer more than the typical salary. I'd assume that would be rare though, and they'd have to show that they could not get anyone at the base salary. It would make sense for special ed teachers to make more, though. In addition to all of the duties of a regular ed teacher, lesson planning etc; they have piles of IEP paperwork, lifeskills lessons, assessments, and maybe things like assisting students in eating/bathrooming.

How can special education teacher get paid over $100k per annum?

I am a retired Special ed. teacher. I taught in a racially diverse community, on Long Island in NY State, where a large percentage of the students qualified for free/reduced lunch. Not a wealthy community, but certainly one where the educational system was important to the tax payers.I did not earn over $100,00.00 until my 20th year of teaching when I had 2 masters degrees and 90 continuing education credits over and above my 10 years of college education. I retired in 2013 after 32 years of teaching and I was earning $127,000.00 per annum. My pension is 55% of the average of my last 3 years salary. So, how does a teacher of special education earn that salary? We are highly educated, highly qualified educators who continue to hone our skills right up until the day we retire.
