In Genesis. Jacob Is Wrestling With The Angel Of The Lord. Who Is This Angel

How did Jacob wrestle with God in Genesis 32: 24-30?

Anything is possible in fiction.

What does the allegory of Jacob wrestling the angel mean?

Jacob fought with the angel because he had to prove he was worthy to become the forefather of a great nation: Israel. He defeated the angel and he was baptised with the name Israel. Abraham, Isaac and his son Jacob are the forefathers of Israel...I think...

What does it mean in Genesis 32:24 that Jacob wrestled with God all night and actually won?

Although the passage starts by referring to Jacob’s opponent as a man, it is soon clear that this was not the case. This is an ancient tradition inserted into the story of Jacob and Esau shortly after a dispute between the brothers. Jacob was left alone and wrestled with a man all night until the break of day, when the man said he must leave (Genesis 32:24ff).Even though his leg was dislocated, Jacob refused to let his opponent go unless he blessed Jacob. That the 'man' was a god is amply demonstrated - Jacob asked for his blessing, he had the prerogative of changing Jacob's name, Jacob's new name was Israel (generally assumed to mean "Wrestled with God') and Jacob called the place Peniel ('The face of God') because he had seen God face to face.If the man who wrestled with Jacob was a god, then Jacob was also a god in the very early, pre-biblical tradition behind this passage, as demonstrated by the fact that he was such an even match for his opponent. And if the opponent was a god, he was also a sun god - daybreak signalled the end of the contest, he had to leave Jacob before the sun could rise, then the sun rose upon Jacob. Jacob did not win and did not really lose, but they will wrestle again tomorrow night, and so on for eternity. This was the daily struggle in which the sun god defeats the moon god at dawn. The story is a myth that tells us that Jacob was the moon god in earliest Hebrew times.Written during the polytheistic period before 722 BCE, this short passage survived more or less intact as part of the important patriarchal narratives that now portray Jacob as a human.

Who does Jacob wrestle with in Genesis and why is he injured?

The bodily manifestations of God in the Old Testament are called “Theophanies.” Christian theology generally recognised the 2nd Person, (the preincarnate Christ) as the member of the Trinity involved. The strength of this identity is in part the statement that “no man has seen God…” from the gospel of John. The statement says “except He who dwells in His bosom, He shall declare Him.” Isaiah saw the Lord (Adonai), … and said “I have seen the Lord (YHWH.)”. Psalms 110 says “the Lord (YHWH) said to my Lord (Adonai) sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.” Jesus said of this Messianic passage “If David called Him Lord, whose son is He?”This is part of the entire scriptural proof of the Trinity. Apparently “no man has seen God” does not mean “no man has ever seen God in a limited way.”So there is your wrestler. But why the limp? Jacob had received the position of birthright by purchasing it from Esau for a bowl of soup. Even though foreseen by God, the method was still wrong. God chose Jacob, but not Jacob’s methods. Later, Jacob stole the Blessing from his blind father by deception, pretending to be Esau. He faked Esau’s hairy arm, and seasoned goat to taste like venison. This “blessing” was very important in their culture. With both the birthright and the blessing, Jacob became the primary patriarch. Esau was so angry Jacob had to run for his life. Later, in receiving his calling from God, these issues had to be resolved. First, Jacob’s wrestling showed his motivation. What he wanted was the right thing, and he wanted it bad enough to hold onto to the theophany of God until it was granted. But it cost him something. You do not go forth on God’s behalf using your own strength and methodology. The alteration to Jacob’s leg served as a permanent reminder. Jacob stopped living up to the meaning of his name “supplanter” or by extension, “deceiver” to his new name Israel, “Prince with God.”

Why did the angel attack Jacob? Genesis 32:24-32?

Jacob was concerned about obtaining the birthright, and at the age of 97 his wrestling all night with an angel to get a blessing showed that he truly appreaciated sacred things. God blessed Jacob's physical and emotional efforts because, Jacob and Rachel kept Jehovah's will in focus and they cherished their heritage. They earnestly prayed for his blessing and they took positive actions to work in harmony with God's will and their prayers.

Why was Jacob’s name changed to Israel in Genesis, and was still referred to both in certain scriptures?

In Genesis 32:28–35:10, G-D changes Jacob's name to Israel.Jacob has been away from the Holy Land for 20 years. On his return home, he meets an angel, and they wrestle until dawn. Ultimately Jacob beats the angel, at which time the angel shows himself to be G-D and gives him the new name, Israel, meaning "he who prevails over the divine." I have also seen it translated as "wrestled with an angel."A cool piece of trivia is that while Jacob and the angel were wrestling, the angel hurt Jacob's hip, causing him to limp for the rest of his life. This is the reason Jewish people are not allowed to eat the sciatic nerve of any animal.

Understanding Jacob and the angel.?

What is your opinion on this wrestling match in Genesis? A man defeating an angel is a little hard for me to come to terms with. It says a lot for mighty angels, right.

Who is this angel or what is the angel suppose to represent? What caused it; just a few guy picking a fight?

Christian views and other views appreciated.

Did Jacob beat God? Genesis 32 King James Version.?

Hos 12:2 The LORD hath also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him.
Hos 12:3 He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God:
Hos 12:4 Yea, HE HAD POWER OVER THE ANGEL, AND PREVAILED: HE WEPT, AND MADE SUPPLICATION UNTO HIM: HE FOUND HIM IN BETHEL, AND THERE HE SPAKE WITH US;

It was an angel.
