What should I wear in -3 weather? I will be going to Korea. Mostly to visit and photograph landmarks.

As a man from Texas that moved to Korea a couple years ago, I'ld like to share some things I've learned about cold weather and clothing. As others have suggested, layers are super important and effective. But here are some more specifics that I have found useful here: #1-get a ski jacket. They are usually pretty wind proof, but also quite warm. Some of the nicer ones even have a liner that can be zipped out and worn on its own. and hoods are great things for jackets and sweatshirts.#2- thermal underwear. Also called Long Johns in some places. Those are a great base layer.#3- a good knit cap, AKA a beanie, AKA a tuque. Its long underwear for your head. I won't let anyone complain they're cold if they're not wearing a hat.#4- a nice scarf. Scarfs aren't just about the neck, in colder weather they wrap the face and ears, and make a world of difference. I never worn one before, but love mine now.#5- tall boots. Think of 'wellies' for the winter. most shoes are kinda thin, and tennis shoes usually have mesh tops which are AWFUL in cold weather. IMPORTANT!! In Korea, it is very very common to put on and take off your shoes several times through the day. Most people around here have shoes you can slip on and off very easily. I highly recommend having a pair of boots (#5 above) that do NOT require tying the laces. Additionally, layers are good for 2 reasons:#1- according to physics (I think) the layers keep the air closest to your body still, and thus the warmth of your body won't be sucked away by the colder air around you. #2- you can take off layers as needed when going inside. Kinda awkward to get on enough gear for an arctic expedition, and then walk into a mall that has the heaters on high. Come on over, we're having a blast, even in the winter!

Would it be weird to cover my tattoo with a Band-Aid to teach in Japan?

Band-aids are actually a fairly common fix for people with tattoos who want to hide them. There's also the option of foundation (if you can find a good one that won't smudge onto your clothes) or wearing collared shirts at work. But it would probably be a good idea to contact someone at your school and ask how they feel about foreigners with tattoos and how they would prefer that you handle it. Some schools are very strict and don't let their teachers (foreign or Japanese) do anything the students can't do, while other schools are more relaxed and allow their teachers a bit more freedom, and some schools will give their foreign teachers a lot of freedom to be themselves and don't worry so much about things like small tattoos. But the only way to find out how your school might react is to contact someone who is already there.
