Do Americans know how to distinguish between Mexican (south of the border) and Tex-Mex food?
Qualifier: I lived in central Mexico for two years, so I do know what it’s supposed to taste like.Most Americans are completely clueless unless they have actually been to Mexico. Most of the “authentic” Mexican restaurants I have been to in the states are only marginally “authentic”. They serve what the locals want, which is tainted by the taco-bell culture. If I order off-menu (because I know what is actually good), sometimes the cooks can get me some good stuff though. The best food I have gotten in the states has actually come from “roach coach” type food trucks that cater to migrant workers.Then there are the chain outfits, especially Taco Bell. This is the biggest load of garbage ever invented, and Americans literally eat it up. The company that owns Taco Bell has been trying to open locations in Mexico for DECADES and they have all failed[1] …even when they open them under a different name! Where I lived in Mexico we had KFC, McDonald's, Burger King, Carl’s Jr, Dairy Queen…but NOBODY was going to eat that Taco Bell garbage.
