Ingrown Toenail Infection Problems

Ingrown toenail infection or cyst?

I have a problem with ingrown toenails especially on the big toe on my left foot on the outside. A couple of weeks ago I went and saw my doctor because my ingrown toenail had become infected after I tried to cut it out. He gave me some antibiotics and told me to use betadine (an antiseptic wash). It seemed to clear up a little, however it was still painful to touch and weeping. That was around 2 weeks ago, and now it has become red and inflamed once again, and extremely painful. Enclosed shoes are out of the question. On closer inspection today it is most painful at the top corner of the outside of my toe, however there is no nail under that flesh as I cut it back before it first got infected. Where its painful there also seems to be something hard under the skin (as if there was nail there). Is it possible for a cyst to have grown there as a result of the initial infection? If not, what would your suggestions be? Am planning to go to the doctor tomorrow.
BTW, im 6 months pregnant so my treatment options are limited....

Infected ingrown toenail question?

A few years back, BOTH of the nails on my big toes were ingrown. One so severely that the entire nail was pulled out... the other nail was cut on both sides vertically from the tip of the nail to the base of the nail---after many numbing injections of course. The nail that was removed, the doc took a pair of pliers, grabbed onto the big nail and gave it one good YANK and the entire nail came out in one piece---of COURSE I felt NONE of this except the needles themselves--which by the way Hurt like crazy for a few seconds...the toes were wrapped with tons of gause bandage and I was sent home and told to stay totally off my feet and elevate them for 24 hours.... There was a LOT of blood and they hurt greatly for the first 24 hours... after that, they hurt less and less. To this day, the nail totally removed has NEVER grown back and there has NEVER been another problem with it... HOWEVER, the other nail that was just cut down each side has grown back SEVERAL times and became ingrown again each time I had it cut...Some people's toe nails just curve INWARD at the tips automatically and they will Always have an ingrown unless they permanently have the nail removed and the area around the nail root cortorized so a nail won't ever grow back. I couldn't go back to wearing regular shoe after the toe nail surgery for about a MONTH. Different people have different reactions to the toe nail surgery and need differing amounts of treatment...but, if you never want to go through the ingrown "experience" again, I would recommend having the doctor permanently remove the toe nail.

Infected Ingrown Toenail?

I use to work for a podiatrist so I can tell you that the only solution is to remove the ingrown nail. I had two removed and I can tell you it is a very simple procedure and it only lasts about 10 minutes and once you get it done you will never suffer from it again. Do not let any doctor remove your whole nail since it will grow back in the exact same position and will develop the same problem since your nail grew in the exact same way. Don't wait any longer since you already have the infection it will only get worse, and if you go by the time the infection its at its worse you even risk the anesthetic not working completely. Hope I helped didn't mean to scare you but those infections are serious.

Ingrown Toenail growing back out problems?

I had an ingrown toenail. It wasnt bad, no swelling, no infection, etc. Well me being the dumass i am, decided to cut it. I totally ****** up and left a little shard in. I cant reach it. I cut it all the way to the base of my nail. the shard is halfway or so in the middle of the little flap of skin thing. Right now when i walk or something like that, it doesnt hurt, but if i put pressure on it, it does. My parents told me not to cut my nails. I did any way. My nail has never grown past my big toe. I want to let my nail grow at least another cm before i show my parents so i can go see a doctor. I show em right now and theyll be pissed. before when i had a shard left, i developped a blood blister there and i popped that. I was able to remove the original shard. What can i do to ensure my toenail grows back out without infection? ANy possivle complications to this? I am fully aware of infection and other stuff. I am not diabetic.

An ingrown toenail or an infection that won't go away?

I worked with a podiatrist for several years and this does sound like a difficult ingrown nail. It is a good idea to get the pus out cause that will help it heal better. You may want to limit the amount of peroxide used. In a med class I took we did an experiment with peroxide and over time it will eat through a piece of meat(just like your flesh) so it should only be used to clean the area the first time. Try soaking your foot in warm Water with Epsom salt. That will also help with healing and maybe a little antibiotic ointment with your band aid(if you can get it to stay on) also try to keep the area clean and dry and open to air as much as possible. hope this helps

Clindamycin for ingrown toenail infection?

When I was much younger, I picked my toenails down far, and they have never grown in correctly. I stubbed my toe (and it bled a little). There was a little piece of skin in between the toe and the skin right next to the toe (this is the big toe) toward the side outwards, and I picked it out. It was kind of under the toe, also. I thought it was a piece of skin from the stubbing. Ever since then, the toe has beome painful when i step down, and it is slighty red and bruised. Yesterday, pus came out, so I began putting neosporin on it. It hasn't had much pus today, but is still red.

I am going to Boston tomorrow, and will be away from my Primary care physician. I have an antibiotic that I have never used, and it is Clindamycin. In a pinch, if I think my toe is infected, will Clindamycin work for this type of a problem? It is in pill form.

Antibiotics to treat infected ingrown toenail?

I'm a ballet dancer, and I used to have terrible issues with ingrown toenails. Something about spending 6 hours a day directly on your toes tends to make them angry. First, stop cutting them out! Yes, it hurts, and it sucks, but it will get better, I promise. Second, cut your toenails straight across. Not curved, not slightly shorter at the edges, STRAIGHT across. I used to take tiny bits of cotton, dip them in rubbing alcohol, and use the end of a metal nail file to GENTLY push it under the nail, so it created a little cushion and to kill the infection. Worked great. Keep doing this until the nail grows out. If you can't stop the ingrown toenails, you can go to the doctor and a) have her kill the part of the nail that keeps getting ingrown or b) completely remove the nail. I have a friend who did the latter and her big toes look a little funny, but she's much more comfortable.

Ingrown toenail and P.E?

So I'm a freshman in high school now, and I have a ingrown, bloody, infected, and gross toenail. My problem is soon I'll be doing a swim class and obviously I'm not swimming with shoes on, and people are going to see it. Should I get it removed and just skip out on swim or...?

My ingrown toenail doesn't hurt anymore..is that a problem?

So I had an ingrown toenail for the past couple of days and I could really feel it in each step, sometimes throbbing when I just sit. But last night, I noticed that some pus was coming out so I kept wiping it with a cotton swab to clean it out and applied Neo-sporin to keep it from getting infected. Now, I don't feel it. I can still see the swelling so I am pretty sure it is still there. My toe isnt't numb or anything, I just don't feel the pain that was there in the past. But since the pain is gone, is that indication of a problem or early stages of infection or anything?

How soon after having an ingrown toenail removed can I go swimming?

if you take a shower you can go swimming, the problem isn’t infection but the tissue can macerate (you know how your fingers get all wrinkly). So unless you are swimming in salt water where it isn’t much of an issue, dry your toe off immediately (and I mean dry dry dry) so it doesn’t stay wet whilst in your shoe and go about your business. 10–15 minutes likely no problem. However, life guards will likely freak out and tell you to stay out long before the toe healing becomes an issue. Can it still get infected? yep, but it isn’t likely due to swimming.
