The website will certainly ask for your IMEI*. They are the geeks who does unlocking for a higher fee and usually a scam even if there are seemingly legit feedback. They can fake it ya know. Tread carefully.*Be very careful since IMEI is unique to a specific phone inlcuding iphones. This can be used for frauds, used on fake phones and committing crimes that might cause you trouble.
Unlocked iPhone 6?
The iPhone 6 from tmobile and verizone wireless are factory unlocked. I would recommend you buy eithe version from the applestore contract free. I have perosnally tested this on the tmobile version. However you should make sure your carrier supports the same bands as then USDM iphone 6 before buying one.
Can I order an iPhone from USA, and unlock it in India?
Possibly. But that is probably risky.You can buy a factory unlocked iPhone from the United States— one that is already unlocked— and begin using it in India freely on any carrier there. That would be the easiest and safest route, so you don't have to deal with being stuck with a locked phone if you get a locked phone from the U.S., and you're unable to unlock it. Anyways, for you, the price wouldn't be different for a locked or unlocked iPhone here— as you would be paying full retail price anyways, and you cannot get a contract/financing deal and then abandon it hoping you can unlock your iPhone.

I bought an iPhone 6plus from U.S through a friend of mine. Saved around 8 thousand for the 64GB version. Bought it from US not to save money but due to limited availability at the time of launch. It also depends from which state you are purchasing the phone since tax on electronic goods is different in different states in the U.S. I bought from California which has the highest sales tax on electronic goods. Considering the conversion rates now(INR to USD), you might not save much.
Would an iPhone 5s bought in America work in India?
One of the people I work with uses an iPhone he bought in Canada. I have proof that it works in Canada. So it should work if you bought it from USA as well. However, remember that if you are buying it because it costs only $299 (which is about INR 18,000), then you are mistaken. Those phones are locked to carriers and will work only with them. It's like they are locked to Airtel, so only Airtel's SIM would work in them, that too only within India. However if you get an unlocked one, it will work across the planet.

I believe foremost thing to consider is that apple does not give international warranty in india. For you to be eligible for replacement warranty iphone has to be bought in india.Buying an unlocked phone from NY wouldn't make much difference to the price and still keeps you devoid of warranty.If warranty doesn't matter to you then getting an unlocked phone makes sense as it will save u some money but then service is apple's biggest benefit. We can get our iphone replaced for any defects if its covered under warranty.Also for screen and water damage on iphone 6 we have to pay 25 k to apple and get a new phone. This facility wont be there for phones bought outside India so you'll have to rely on gray market to get these repairs done.Last, you can not get insurance for phones bought from outside india.Hope this helps you in taking a decision.
