Is An Oriental Shorthair Mix Hypoallergenic

Are tabby cats hypoallergenic?

Since I was 3 yrs old, I've known I have cat allergies. When I met my husband (my boyfriend then), I knew he loved cats but I never thought much about it. He wanted a cat so I thought we could give it a go. we adopted a tabby from a shelter. I could rub my face all over this cat and not sneeze once!! Unfortunately, she died within a couple of weeks (I think she may have had something wrong with her, my husband didn't want to have her checked out at the vet, despite me wanting to). We tried again with a siamese (lilac point or whatever, she was already up to date on shots and stuff) but it was allergy city all over again. Is there something about tabbies, or was that just a thing of luck with that cat? Anyone with a similar experience. I want for him to be able to have a cat, but I can't live with my allerigies all the time.

Is an Oriental shorthair mix hypoallergenic?

Nope. Some people can tolerate the short close coat of an OSH. A cat that is a supposed OSH mix is probably a skinny domestic short hair, and not a mix at all. Even a mix though will have the same coat as any other domestic short hair. If you want that short, close coat you need a real OSH from a reputable breeder who breeds for that short, close coat. Only if it comes with papers (from TICA, CFA, or ACFA) is it really an OSH - many skinny domestics are passed off as OSH cats - they are not.

Are there hypoallergenic cats that are not hairless?

Yes, there may be a bloodline of cats that lack the Fel-d 1 protein in their saliva which is what almost all people who are allergic to cats are sensitive to.It is claimed that these cats resulted from a natural mutation and have been bred to perpetuate the lack of Fel-d1 just for people with allergy. They aren’t cheap, though! Last time I enquired, they were going for $7,000–12,000.These cats look like every day domestic cats (moggies in the UK) and don’t have any major health problems as far as I am aware, but I haven’t looked into them in a few years. This bloodline of cats is actually said to be less allergenic than the hairless breeds who have low allergen loads because they don’t have a lot of saliva protein on them. They have low levels because they don’t groom much, if at all. They are still going to produce small amounts of Fel-d1 from the skin as well as what is in the saliva, but will probably have less on them overall.Once upon a time there were two companies that claimed to be producing Fel-d1 free cats. One went out of business and it was unclear if it was fraudulent or not. The founder had a very shady history, so many consider it to have been likely that it was a scam.Allerca - Hypoallergenic CatsAllergen-free cats - a breed apartTransgenic Pets appears to be legit and also appears to still be in business. If they are still selling hypoallergenic cats is not immediately apparent. There are other purebred cats that are said to have less Fel-d1 in their saliva and skin. Those are listed and described here :What are the Best Hypoallergenic Cat Breeds for People with Allergies? It is really unclear if any of these breeds actually do have less Fel-d1.Even among the general population of cats, there seems to be a large variation in the amount of Fel-d1 between different individual cats as some cats cause a person’s eyes to start watering and other allergy symptoms if they are in the room with the cat and other cats don’t have an effect on the same person at all.Allergy to cats is not as simple as just the Fel-d1 protein, but it is the most common cause of allergy to cats. If you have an allergy to cats that isn’t life threatening the best bet to find one is probably trial and error, not breed.

Allergies and Hypoallergenic Cats?

I really want a cat bad but my sister is allergic so my parents are against it but willing to compromise if we can find a good hypoallergenic cat. I heard Siberian and balinese cats are good. Any tips? I really want a cat and would do anything for one.

How do I get my cat to eat new hypoallergenic food?

Hi there,

I also have a cat named Trouble that is terribly allergic and became critically ill. He is a white oriental shorthair neuter, aged 8 years. Previously he was fed Wellness chicken and chicken and beef. Both chicken and beef are notoriously famous for creating allergies.

We first tried Science Diet Duck and Peas, Venison and peas and Rabbit and peas. He turned his nose up at the food, thankfully we only had a few cans. Some of the hypoallergenic varieties are not palatable.

Someone suggested that I try Natural Balance, Venison and Peas, and lo and behold, Trouble dived into the bowl with glee and delight and loves it. I get it at Petfooddirect.com. It is available also at PetCo and perhaps PetSmart. Two sizes are available, 6 oz cans and 3 oz cans. They also make a duck and pea cat food as well. Both duck and Venison are excellent for hypoallergenic kitties.

By the way, he had no digestive upset when I switched him immediately to the hypoallergenic food. He stopped vomiting immediately.

His brother, Hush Puppy is the most finicky cat and he also enjoys the venison and peas cat food. I was amazed, but this is very convenient!

Also, Natural Balance is 1/2 the price of Science Diet Hypoallergenic food, and is far superior nutritionally as well.

Good luck and hope that this works.

Please feel free to email me anytime, and let me know if that worked.

Are tabby cats hypoallergenic? Why or why not?

There is no such thing as a hypoallergenic cat, I’m sorry to say, regardless of coat color or pattern or hair length. Even bald cats are allergenic to people that are allergic to cats. The molecule (it is called Fel d1) that the vast majority of people are allergic to is in the cats’ saliva. All cats have saliva, and all cats lick themselves. When the cat saliva dries on their skin/fur, the molecule becomes airborne and floats into people’s noses, where it causes reactions in those that are allergic. There is some evidence that female cats have slightly less Fel 1 in their saliva than male cats, but that still doesn’t make them hypoallergenic. If you would like more details, I have written previously about what is known about the molecular mechanisms of cat allergies (Angie Cordle's answer to Why are some people allergic to cats and some are not?).

Are ragdoll cats hypoallergenic?

I'm mainly allergic to cats. But I had a friend who had a persian/siberian mixed cat (I think it was mostly persian).. with maybe some siberian is what her mom said a long time ago.. but I was fine with him for a couple hours. Plus they keep their house SUPER clean, hardwood floors like my family has. Her cat shed quit a bit when she and I would pet him.. but I was still fine. I would get a little watery eyes. But nothing major like a shorter haired cat like I had a couple years ago and it was horrible. But I do love cats though! My dad has major allergies to cats too, and my mom too. But I really want a cat, even though we have a dog that's hypoallergenic and we're all fine with him. So I heard that ragdoll kittens/cats were hypoallergenic. Is that true? I also heard that Siberian cats are hypoallergenic. But they're really expensive and not as common as ragdoll cats. So I'm guessing that's why they're so expensive. So I'm wondering if Ragdoll cats are hypoallergenic which is my main question.. thanks

Can a cat allergy be specific? Apparently I'm allergic to my housemate's moggy, but I had no problem with my own Siamese cats.

Some types of cats produce less of the allergen (it’s in their saliva, oddly enough) that aggravate allergies. The Siamese is one recommended for people with allergies. Here’s the page:Hypoallergenic Cat BreedsThese breeds have less of the allergen. The Best Cats for People Awith AllergiesSiberian (Less of the Fel d 1 protein)Balinese (Less of the Fel d 1 protein)BengalBurmeseColorpoint ShorthairCornish RexDevon RexJavaneseOcicatOriental ShorthairRussian BlueSiameseSphynxAllergies are very complicated and VERY person-specific and very cat specific. When I googled “hyperallergenic cats” I couldn’t find a reliable link, but of course, a picture of a gorgeous moggy popped up.There are a number of ways to deal with this, other than moving out. If your allergy is mild, you can take benadryl; HEPA filters help; changing the cat’s diet sometimes works. Good air circulation with fresh air coming into your home helps a lot. Avoid areas where Mog likes to sleep.I do have an acquaintance who has several common allergies, including cats. When he used to visit, my daughter’s mog loved him and would swirl her tail around him. He wasn’t going to complain about my cats, but I finally realized how bad she was making his allergies and she spent the time he visited (relatively short) in a closed room. If your allergy is as severe as his is (watering eyes, red eyes, sneezing, rhinitis) you may have to rethink where you’re living. It’s a difficult choice for your housemate, giving up a beloved mog or a good housemate.
