Is Being A Good Dancer Something You Have To Be Born With

Natural Born Dancer...What Do You Think?

I think there is a such thing as a natural born dancer. And if there wasn't...then there wouldn't be anybody in this world who couldn't dance. There are those who are good dancers and then there are those who are okay dancers and then there are those who can't dance at all.

If there was no such thing as natural born dancers then how do you explain kids are 6, 7, 8 and 9 years old who are able to dance very well. I have a 3 year old niece who can dance her butt off. I mean watching her dance is like watching a grown adult whos been dancing for years.

I love watching people dance. And wonder to myself..damn how do they do it? How are the able to move their body like that? What does it take to dance good like that? My sister is a good dancer. She doesn't take any training classes and she is able to move and dance. She is able to pick up a dance move quick and me...well it takes time.

I love to dance. But I don't think I have it naturally. When I listen to a song...all these dance moves come in my head....but I don't do them. These dance moves will pop up in my head and then I tell the person next to me "hey this dance move pop in my head" and they will say "well let me see you do it" and I'll try to do it but can' t really do like how i pictured it my head but when the person next to me see what I'm trying to do..they are able to pull it off and do it exactly how I had picture the moves in my head.

I was told if you are able to pictured it in your head and if your body starts to move...then you go it. But I was also told that I was insecure and Idon't know how to let go.

But I don't think insecurity has anything to do with it because if you're a natural dancer and dancing just runs through your blood...then you are able to do it. No matter how scared or insecure you are.

Don't you think so?

How do you learn musicality? Or is it something you are born with?

I completely agree with both of the answers I read. A music class could be great for you! I come from a musical backround and later decided to dance. I think having that backround has really helped me. I'm a stronger musician then dancer, but I think my musicality has helped me a lot in auditions because a lot of times, they're looking for dancers who can feel the music more then dancers who can just learn the steps.

I think taking piano, guitar or even drums would be good for you. Something like tap might be good too if you don't already do that, because it forces you to count. I also just think that the more you dance and the more you focus on listening to the music you'll improve over time. Being aware of it, and working on it is a great first step! Good luck!

Do you think EVERYONE can dance?

Its like this; everyone can play basketball but not everyone can be a Michael Jordan. That being said Micheal Jordan isn't the only player in pro basketball there are many open spots.

If your are talking about dancing professionally you have to be very good. But I have seen a few dancers who I don't think are that good dance professionally.

You need some sort of natural talent, but even without it if your worked really hard there maybe a chance you can be really good, its just a lot harder to do, is all. Its happened before people have done it, not just in dance.

It also comes down to style, some people will be good in some styles more than others. Like someone can have a real talent for modern dance, but only okay in hip hop, as an example.

Is being a great dancer something that is inborn, or can it be achieved through relentless practice?

It depends on what you mean by ‘great’. If you think that great and Olympic class are synonymous, then truly great dancers are born, not made. You must be born with the talent and athletic ability to become a great dancer. Now if that isn’t the case, then it’s a matter of instruction and practice.

How long does it take to get good at dancing? ?

Varies from person to person, I was born into dance, salsa mainly and have been dancing since a very young age. So when I started hip-hop I was already very loose and comfortable with dancing, you can imagine how quickly I picked it up.

For someone in your situation, I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you practice on a regular basis your body will become more comfortable with all the movements, soon you'll have more "flow." It takes a while because your body isn't used to these type of movements.

Also I want to mention one thing, ATTITUDE.. is huge in hip-hop dancing. I don't know if your instructors have told you about this yet, they don't really emphasize attitude at the beginning. They'll focus on this like afte 2-3 months or so. After a year of dancing hip-hop I came to appretiate and i've seen first hand how much a persons attitude affects their "flow."

Just stick to it, and i'm sure you'll be lighting up dance floors with your moves in no time!

Is talent an important part of being a good dancer?

Talent determines the bottom line, and what you do with your talent determines your limitation. While physical talent is something you’re born with, a lot more factors are impacting a good dancer.Joey Chua describes the following factors impacted the talent development of professional dancers. However, I think these factors are relevant to amateur dancers, including:personality traitscommitmentinfluence of significant peopleNone of them is related to physical talent, you can enhance these factors by :personality traits: develop traits like hard-working, perseverance and pay attention to detailcommitment: be committed to attending classes. Drill and practice on your own.significant people: ask feedback and receive appraisal from family, friend and dance role model.Talent is an important part of being a good dancer, and you can develop the talent.ReferenceJoey Chua. How can you be a fast learner for dancing?

The funny thing about this question is that the quicker you learn the steps the better you will remember them. One of my instructors told me that the easiest way to remember steps is to see it in patterns.

It's very difficult to explain, but when you see the steps you've got to mentally register it and say to yourself "Okay, this is the step, and I will remember it".

What you have to do is pick out a part of the step. For count 1, if your turn you body to the left, that's your pattern. It might be easier to use a word to remember it (such as left) but the idea is that at this part of the pattern your body is left.

For count two, if your arms go up in the air register to the dirrection in your memory. It will soon take the shape of a pattern. Which will make it easier to remember. Another way is to say it in your head (kind of like ballet instructors). So you would say "Left, arms up, front develope`, hold and jump."

If you actually say it over and over and over it will eventualy stick. To remember the steps is just constant revision. Everyday just go through the entire steps, physically or mentally. Mental revision is just as effective as physical revison.
