Do interior designer's make good money?

Median annual earnings for interior designers were $40,670 in May 2004. The middle 50 percent earned between $30,890 and $53,790. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $23,440, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $71,220.

Median annual earnings in the industries employing the largest numbers of interior designers in May 2004 were as follows:

Architectural, engineering, and related services $44,740
Specialized design services 42,000

Interior design salaries vary widely with the specialty, type of employer, number of years of experience, and reputation of the individuals. Among salaried interior designers, those in large specialized design and architectural firms tend to earn higher and more stable salaries. Interior designers working in retail stores usually earn a commission, which can be irregular.

For residential design projects, self-employed interior designers and those working in smaller firms usually earn a per-hour consulting fee, plus a percentage of the total cost of furniture, lighting, artwork, and other design elements. For commercial projects, they might charge a per-hour consulting fee, charge by the square footage, or charge a flat fee for the whole project. Also, designers who use specialty contractors usually earn a percentage of the contractors earnings on the project in return for hiring the contractor. Self-employed designers must provide their own benefits.

Is interior design a good career?

At my current 4-year school, they only offer historic preservation. There is only one school that offers Interior design which is the art institute. Is it a good school? Also, I would like to do interior design or something of that nature since it deals with creativity. Is it a good career path and is it really hard?

I want to be an interior designer?

I am an interior designer and think it's great that at the age of 15 you already know what you want to do! The fact that your family comes to you when they need design help is enough to say that you ARE creative. With experience and knowledge you will become a better designer. Throughout college I wasn't as creative as I am today, but that's because I've learned a great deal by interning and working in the field.

Just beware that being an interior designer isn't all glam as HGTV makes it seem. Those people are really interior decorators (not all but the majority). You will need to know how to build things just as an architect does. There is a program called AUTOCAD and like it or not (everyone hates it) you will need to know it!!!! Especially if you want to go into commercial design. That is another thing you will have to decide, do you want to do residential or commercial design? I am in commercial and work on restaurants, spas, etc. I have a blast!

It's not hard to get a job as an interior designer. Architectural firms are always looking for designers (this also depends on your location). My first job I made $29,000 salary, but I'm not in the greatest city to make loads of money. I am now working for a new company and I am making a lot more!!

To prepare yourself now, learn about products (i.e. furniture, upholstery, etc.). Get familiar with the latest and greatest design products. A great resource is Interior Design magazine (they also have a good website www.interiordesign.net), Metropolis, & Contract magazine.

Also, it may sound intimidating, but contact a local firm and ask if you could just come over for a bit to check out what an interior designer does, what environment they work in. My previous firm and current firm have high school students do that all the time!!!!!!!

If you decide to go into interior design, go to a good school and intern as much as possible.

I love my job, really!! You sound like you have a good eye and don't doubt yourself! You'd be surprise what you can design! The best reward within this job is designing and creating a space and then after it's executed, to actually walk through it and say to yourself, "wow, I actually made this!" It's an incredible feeling!

Hope all this helped and good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

Is interior designer a good career?

I'm an Interior Designer and have been for several years. One of the best schools in the country for Interior Design is the Art Institute. There's one in LA. What you want most is a "CIDA Accredited" program. This means that the school meets national requirements for Interior Design education. You can look at this website: http://www.accredit-id.org/accredited-programs for a list of CIDA Accredited programs all over the nation.

One thing to keep in mind is that real interior design is nothing like what you see on HGTV and other TV shows. There's a lot of computer work involved; drafting, creating layouts, and rendering images are all done on the computer. Most of the time you'll be doing mostly technical work. You will spend a lot of your time compiling building code analyses and you won't get to do the paint, furniture, and decor very often. If you aren't as interested in the technical side as much, you might want to consider being an interior decorator.

As for ease of finding a job, job stability, and average income, the interior design profession is suffering right now. There aren't as many buildings going up, so the need for interior designers has decreased over the last 5 years. It can be very difficult to find a job, unless you're willing to relocate. The average pay, based on my personal experience and the experiences of my coworkers, is about $30,000 to $40,000 per year. And that's only if you're working for someone else. If you decide to go into business for yourself, you'll probably lose money the first couple years and only make about $15,000-$25,000 per year, depending on the number of clients you have.

Ultimately, I love my job. If you like being technical with some creativity, you should seriously consider Interior Design. And if you don't need a large income, so much the better. I included my website in the sources, so if you want to contact me with other questions, feel free.

Good luck!

How to become an interior designer?

I LOVE interior designing! First of all, you need to advertise your business and establish a fee. Make sure that it's clear that your client will be paying for everything (in his/her budget...). I'm not sure what interior designers charge by, but I'm sure that you can find out.

To get started, you should advertise your business! Run adds in the paper and include your number and business name. Also include the types of business that you do (Ex: "Interior designer for residental homes"). You can also put up flyers at relator offices, the grocery store...anywhere that you can think of!

What you have to do is sit down with your client and discuss what type of room they want, etc. Then you give them your ideas for colors schemes, etc. You may have to paint the room, but they will be paying the painter. You will help them chose the paint colors! Then you get to discuss the decor. Help them pick out furniture and and other design elements. You will decorate their room for them! This is just to give you a feel for it. To do it as a real job, you will have to go to college and get a degree!!!

I think that this is a GREAT job! I would LOVE to become an interior designer one day!!
