Is It Normal To Have My Lip Be Swollen For Over Eight Hours After Being Pierced

Ears pierced 4 weeks ago. Now one ear is swollen?

Technically, you can get infections in piercings no matter how long they've been healed: they're a hole in your body and can become infected just like your throat can when you get a cold.

But after 4 weeks, it may not be fully healed anyway.

Ibuprofen or Tylenol will reduce the swelling. To help with the infection, I'd suggest soak it in the saline solution that is sold for cleaning contacts lenses, at least twice a day, for 15-20 minutes. Sound bothersome? So is an infected ear, so find some way to do it. Either that or gently clean it with a mild antibacterial soap twice a day. But if it gets the least bit worse, or more swollen, DO go to the doctors for antibiotics.

And do not take the earrings out, either. It's a shame you can't, because the earrings used by Claires in their piercing guns are of very poor quality metal and are not safe to be used for the time during which the hole is healing. But if you take them out while you have an infection, the hole could close up and trap the infection inside your ear lobe. At least with the hole there, it will have a chance to drain if necessary.

You MUST be VERY diligent about cleaning it, and always listen to your body. And please, the next time you want something pierced, go to an actual, professional piercer. Claires is crap, and their tools are unsafe.

And yes, the pressure from the phone could irritate a healing lobe, and may have been the source of the infection. Be careful that you don't rest the phone against you ear lobe until it's well healed.

Good luck. (:

Swollen lip piercing-lip ring-help!!!?

I have had my lip ring for about 7 or eight months now and have not previously had any issues with it until now. About a week and a half ago I took out the original ring and put in one that was a bit smaller. All of the sudden I woke up this morning and my lip is swollen and hurts like hell!! There is hardly any discharge...its hurts soo bad! I am rinsing with salt water but I don't know what else to do..I'm worried that the ring is too small for the swelling. I can't even get it out of my lip to put the bigger ring in because my lip is just too swollen and painful...help!

Extremely Swollen Lip Piercing?

Okay, before people say, "Oh, it's normal to the healing process." You should know that I've had my piercing for 8 months.

I clean it daily, and never had any problems with it. The only time it swelled was during the first week after the initial piercing. I woke up this morning and my lip was swollen beyond belief. The swelling is only on the inside and the top of my lip. Was my lip ring possibly pulled, causing issues? Or is my piercing infected. If it's infected, how do I take care of it?

Why is my lip piercing swollen?

That would depend on when you got your lip pierced. If you had it done recently, this is normal. To reduce the swelling, use ice. Try to avoid smoking, and talking excessively. Also don’t touch the piercing with dirty hands/play with it.Touch it only if you are cleaning it, and with clean hands, always!Avoid oral sex and kissing until it’s completely healed.

Rook piercing swollen after changing jewelry?

I've had a rook piercing for about 8 years and frequently have to remove it for work, sometimes for weeks or months. When I am able to wear jewellery again I have stretch it which can be painful and sometimes cause minor bleeding. I also have my tragus and anti-tragus pierced, although these are much easier and quicker to stretch as they have less cartilage tissue.

Swelling would not be unusual as you will have caused some minor trauma to the area, however, I'm surprised by the bruising. Having said that, if the if the CBR was a different shape and length to the new bar then again, you may have caused some additional trauma.

Heat, swelling, pain and a small amount of exudate (pus) are not usually serious and can signal trauma and then the body starting to heal. However, if the tissue swells dramatically and produces excess and/or smelly exudate then that could signal an infection.

With all my piercings (5) I've been advised to use salt water and tea tree oil when cleaning/changing jewellery. However, personally I find surgical spirit to be the best thing. Piecers have said to me that they think it can be a bit harsh on the skin but I have sensitive skin and have never had any problems, and I know then for sure my jewellery is bacteria-free and the area is clean.

I'd GUESS from what you say that there is just a bit of trauma as it's a delicate area, however, if signs of infection occur I'd advise you to see a doctor.

Will my monroe piercing close if I have to take it out for about 8 hours everday?!?

It will definitely close, no doubt in my mind.
You should just put in a clear retainer in when you go to school, no big deal.

Facial piercings close up extremely fast. I was told that if I took my lip or even my nose piercing out for even three hours they would start to close, and I've had them for just about two years.

Definitely use a retainer, because if you try and force the jewelry back in after eight hours, there will definitely be some serious issues.

I got my lip pierced almost a week ago, it's still sore, red around it, my skin is peeling all around it, and it's really itchy. Is that normal?

Like others have said. The mouth moves constantly so it takes a while for those piercing to heal. The soreness is expected. The redness means keep a good eye on it and the flaking and or peeling is completely normal. The skin in that area is trying to heal. My snakebite piercings will still sometimes peel after they get chapped, yes that also happens. Don’t use a high alcohol content cleanser inside your mouth. The mouth actually has good bacteria to promote healing and fight off invasive bacteria. Using too much of listerine or similar products will wipe out those good bacteria and irritate the new holes in your body. Remember it’s wounded flesh, you wouldn’t go pouring that in a cut 24/7 so don’t do it to your mouth. Wash your hands before touching anywhere near them and use antibacterial soap to clean them. Clear and white discharge are completely normal. Yellow and green are cause for concern as it most likely indicates infection. Tenderness should begin dying down soon and with it the redness that is a sign of it. The peeling has been a common thing for me over the last six years. No concerns there. And itching is a sign of healing. Which means you’re on the right track. Just be gentle and clean about them.

Is it normal to have a fever on the day after a lip piercing?

Generally, fevers after any piercing aren't expected but also aren't reasons to suddenly panic either. As I said, they aren't expected, but it could just be a coincidence that you were going to catch this cold or flu whether or not you got that piercing. However, to be on the safe side since a fever can be a symptom of an infected piercing I would suggest that you keep an eye on your new piercing for any other signs of infection. You're looking for the generic signs and symptoms, pain and tenderness around the piercing, possibly warm to the touch and swollen, any dark yellow discharge coming from the piercing etc. As I said, a fever can also be a symptom of infection but if you don't see any of the other signs or anything else that concerns you about your piercing then you may in fact have just caught something unrelated to your piercing. As always but especially during this time to be safe, keep your hands and piercing clean, wash your hands before handling your piercing (though this early on you shouldn't really be touching it anyway), stick to the same routine when cleaning your piercing as you normally would and you should be okay.If you notice any signs of an infected piercing or are concerned with something then I would suggest going to the body piercing/tattoo studio you had it done at and ask them to take a look. Better safe than sorry.Hope that helps.Thank you for the request, Mateus Mello.

Can I remove my new piercing for a couple of hours after I’ve had it on for 2 days?

No, I wouldn’t recommend it. A piercing takes several weeks to heal, so after only 2 days, it will likely still be swollen, etc. So, it will hurt to take it out, and it will either swell up because if the trauma of taking it out and/or start to heal, so most likely you will not be able to get it back in. And, then there is the risk of infection. So, no, don’t do it. If you really need to take it out, then take it out, and then go back to your piercer and ask about putting it back in. However, there should be no reason that you have to take it out. E.g. I know that some surgeons ask patients to take all metal out, but this is is not always necessary, so before you take it out, ask why you are being asked to do it. There will most likely be a way around it. E.g. you can put tape over the jewellery, etc.

How long after getting a lip piercing until I can keep it out for 8 hours a day?

*not a professional, just have piercings*I would not recommend taking out your lip piercing for long at all. It might take years for your peircing to reach this point and keep the post out. Piercings tend to close up quickly. I took my septum out for about an hour and I was unable to get my ring back :(I would however look in to getting jewelry specifically made to hide your piercing ie, flesh tone or clear bioplast. Hope this helps you.
