Is It Ok To Leave A Dog At Home

How should I leave food for my dogs at home if me and my family are going out of town for 2 days?

I'm not going to advise you how to leave your dogs home alone for 2 days. It is not, or should not be an option. My daughter friend who is 15 was left alone for 2 days just this past weekend. She got herself in trouble but luckily she phoned me and I was able to help. Her parents (who neglected their child) arrived at the hospital having had to cut their trip short. Why am I comparing dogs to humans? Those dogs are less able to look after themselves than a 15 year old and they can't call anyone if they are in trouble. Leaving them is wilful neglect.Bite the bullet and pay for a minder or cancel your trip. They are the only 2 options available. If you could enjoy your trip whilst leaving them home alone then I seriously have my doubts  that you are a suitable dog owner.

Can I leave my dog alone for 16 hours?

My boyfriend is going to be out of town next week and unfortunately one of the days he'll be gone is my busiest day of the week! I leave the house at 7am and won't be back until 10pm. I have work and classes and won't even have enough time to eat lunch, so there is no way for me to come home and walk my dog. I hate leaving her alone all day and it has never happened before but this time I just can't work around it. We just moved here so I don't have any close friends that I could ask for help either. =( My dog is very little and has a very low level of energy for some reason, she's never had accidents and doesn't chew on stuff either. Oh, I feel so horrible about it! How can I make it as pleasant as possible for her?

Is it ok to leave you dog home alone for 2 or 3 days?????!!!!!!!!?

Your parents are right not to allow you to take the dog on vacation. Dogs are much more comfortable at home in their own surroundings. As long as you have a fenced yard and the dog has access to food, water and shelter (preferably a dog house or garage), there is no reason you can't leave the dog alone for two or three days, or even longer. The problem is food. If you don't have an automatic feeder, you would have to leave a great deal of food available and as you know, dogs wolf down their food and will eat as much as you give them.

I've left dogs alone for as much as a week at the time. They had a comfortable dog house with blankets, more than an acre of fenced grounds in which to exercise, and I left a container of water beneath a dripping faucet and I have an automatic feeder. They were just fine.

@Moondog: No one is going to be prosecuted for "abandonment of an animal" if the dog has food, water and shelter! You are way out of line making such statements when you have no idea what you're talking about!

Leaving dog home alone for 2 days?

If you have a fenced-in yard your dog will be fine as long as there is shelter, food and water, especially water. I would not leave even a well-trained dog inside. When they get bored they start destroying things.
Most of the answers here are by animal lover wackos. Can you believe "you should never leave your dog alone for more than a few hours." Some of us have to work for a living.
Some of these wackos treat their dogs better than most children are treated which is their business but don't let anyone make you feel guilty about leaving a dog alone for a few days. He will be fine.

Is it okay to keep my dog tied when I have to leave the house?

It is very cruel to keep a dog chained for long periods of time, and very sad too. I would really recommend that you consider putting up the dog up for adoption, because your handling of it is seems so whimsical!Such a dog becomes a very disturbed creature and even more clingy when the owner comes home.I remember my labrador, even though she was with three other dogs, biting off 13 pairs of my shoes! I could not but condone it, and even when she grew up and we lived in a much bigger space she would bite off the heads of my Dahlias for some reason- I never quite understood why she went for those plants in particular. But then I could not but leave her in the space with the other dogs, where they could all enjoy the sun- instead of keeping them where they would get some sun, while I would be away. There are some dogs who are prone to separation anxiety and some are plain naughty. At seven months your puppy may be teething and his biting behaviour may be more of that then anger/separation alone. Quarantining the animal in a little space where he can hide in a little corner is always more helpful. In the course of my life I have lived alone with four dogs and they all go and hide in their own corners or spots once i am out of the house- this has happened in all the homes we all lived together - both in Faridabad and in Goa -where we lived in a village and a city one year each.Dogs need inclusion not abandonment- especially family dogs. Please don’t leave it tied or in a balcony, or else kindly consider giving up the dog, for your own peace of mind and to save a beautiful dog/yourself from a lifetime of suffering.

Is it okay to leave a dog outside in the rain?

Dogs can suffer from exposure -- to rain, sun, cold, heat, etc. -- the same as people can. Not only is is cruel to keep a dog confined without proper shelter, it's also illegal. The cost of a simple dog house will be much cheaper than the fine your family may face if you're reported. In some areas, even jail time can be involved.

Have a heart -- let the dog inside, then get him a proper dog house.

Leaving one dog at home while taking the other to hang out with a friend?

I have two dogs and tomorrow, I am going to the park tomorrow with my friend and her dog. The dog I am leaving at home doesn't really enjoy other dogs and I feel really bad that I am going to leave her at home by herself tomorrow while the other dog will be with me. I got the one I am going to leave home before we got the other dog so she has been home by herself before but that was nearly 3 years ago. I feel guilty, what should I do to make it up to her?

How long is it okay to leave sweater on a dog?

i have a dachshund too that shivers like crazy when it's cold in my house. she sleeps under the covers with me at night so i'm not sure if they should have sweaters on for long periods of time. when she gets her sweater on to go outside she really doesn't care that it's on.

i would leave it on for a while to see if it bugs her and if it doesn't then i'm sure you can leave it on at night. i would use a more light weight one than a heavy knitted sweater.

@ lamar: dogs with a very short coat like smooth dachshunds, get cold in very cold weather. whether you would like to believe so or not, they do get cold. it snows where i live should i let my tiny short hair dog go out in the snow with nothing but the little fur she has? no, that would be cruel.

Should I crate my dog when I leave the house for work? I work 8 hours a day.

8 hours is a tremendously LONG time for a dog to hold its bladder and feces. How would you feel holding it that long? And if you provide water to the dog they'll likely drink and need to go at a maximum of 5 hours at a time.Get a dog walker if you plan on crating your dog if you don't trust him to have free roam house. If you have a small dog you can train him to use pee pads but this would not feasible for a large dog. And you'd still need to hire a walker even if you let your dog free roam the house unless you'd like to come home to poop and pee every day.Just because a dog is crated doesn't mean they won’t in an emergency poop and pee in there crate. In fact if you routinely leave your dog 8 hours a day, chances are they'll learn it's easier to void their bowels and bladder than holding it, even if their forced to sit in their own mess. And that is a huge problem.Leaving your dog crated for 8 hours is bordering on neglect, let me tell you. Please don't leave your dog crated for more than 4 hours without a bathroom break and exercise. Hire a dog walker. If you can't afford a dog walker, you need to find a solution, offer a neighbor kid some money or ask your elderly trusted neighbor if they’d be willing to walk your dog for free. Ask a a friend, ask anybody but please don't leave your dog in that situation.
