Is It Okay To Use The Word

Is it okay to use the word mulatto in the present days?

No, unless you're writing, "We are all mulatto, my italics signifying that this is an outdated and possibly taunting word to describe a person of 'mixed' (different phenotypes) parentage." OED (Oxford English Dictionary) says "1. A person having one white and one black parent. Freq. more generally: a person of mixed race resembling a mulatto. Cf. metis n.1, quadroon n.Now chiefly considered offensive."http://www.oed.com/view/Entry/12...

Is it ok to use the word "Negroes" in my paper?

I would only use the word in quotes from the author, or specifically referring to something the author wrote. You could use African american, or black people. It is becoming more politically accepted to use black people as a reference. Hope this helps!

Is it okay to use F-Word in America and do the Americans use it frequently?

Generally speaking, no."Fuck" is a particularly vulgar word in American speech, and you shouldn't use it around anyone you aren't fairly comfortable with. Profanity is considered impolite, and it can be taken to mean disrespect. Its usage will vary depending on the company you keep, and it's more common among younger people. Some Americans will be offended by it, and judge you to be a crass and rude person if you use it often. Some people think foul language is the mark of lower intelligence. To be on the safe side, don't use it around polite company, professional company, the elderly, or people you don't know very well. Definitely don't use it around children, as parents can get pretty riled up about that.In some places in the United States, there used to be laws banning swearing in public. If you swear in school or private property, you can be kicked out or disciplined (if a student or employee). If you swear at someone, that can be construed as fighting words, and you can be charged with disorderly conduct, although it generally requires other disruptive behavior. You can also be fined for swearing in court.

Is it ok for Korean rappers to use the N word?

I don't know, but every time I go play basketball at the spot I hear Asian,Chinese and Latino people using it. What's funny though is I don't hear any black people using it. How messed up is that?

Why is it okay to freely use the word "Retarded" as in "that's retarded", but you can't use racial slang?

Not that I want to use any racial words.. including the R-word. It just isn't right for people to be able to say "That's Retarded" or "You're Retarded".. when it is speaking of people who physically and mentally can't help it ..... They can't take up for themselves.

But yet it's wrong to say words that could be "racist" .. just because those who take offense can take up for themselves.

Just isn't right. Why isn't the "that's retarded" slang banned? And why do people allow their kids to say it, and say it themselves? Shouldn't that be considered racist?

Is the word "fruitless" okay to use in a formal essay?

Yes, fruitless is fine in a formal essay.

It's a good word in English, meaning useless.

If your teacher is a stickler for things being "just right", you might consider using the word "useless" instead.

Is it okay to use the word "literally" in a formal essay?

No word should be off limits in a formal essay if used appropriately. The word "literally" is actually used quite often in literature, even in a professional context.

Is it ok to use the word "fuck" on an everyday basis in the US/UK?

Whether or not you include the word 'fuck' (or the F-word/F-bomb as we endearingly call it) in your everyday vocabulary is all a matter of your preferences on self expression. It is completely up to you. I know lots of people who say it on a daily basis, and I also know lots of people who will likely go to their grave without ever saying it.If you choose to include it in your daily vocabulary, it is all about context and you should be aware of how you may be perceived. Generally don't say it around elderly people, it's disrespectful.Don't say it around children, or anywhere that children may hear it.Don't direct it to someone personally unless you're well aware of the situation and the implications of doing so.Never say it in a professional or religious setting. Also, just generally don't say it around someone you don't know all that well, or anyone you want to make a good first impression with.It may make you look vulgar, trashy, or uneducated. People may judge you.It might be a good idea to try to reflect the language of the person you are conversing with if you are unsure. If you are at a loud pub with a gang of people drinking, there may be some use of the word in casual conversation. In that instance it's fine. If you are around someone who you've never heard talk that way, or in a quiet or sensitive environment such as a library or an office, refrain from saying it. Be aware of your environment. That being said, if you're in the comfort of your own home, and you stub your toe... go for it! Sometimes it just feels good to verbally let out a bit of pain in the moment.Generally young people will be more at ease with it, and as I said it's all about context. Just make sure to be aware of such things and try not to let it slip out without first making sure it won't offend anyone. I think the best rule would be, if you're unsure whether you should say it or not, don't.
