My family wanted to take toys to the poor children in Guatemala, but don't know what to give, any suggestions?

There are some very good suggestions already here, but I have to tell you one of my experiences. My wife, who grew up in a poor town in Guatemala, and I bring things down everytime we travel or we send stuff down if someone else in the family is traveling. Toys are great, but more practical things are better. We always bring down clothes and school supplies. When my wife was growing up, the entire classroom shared ONE PENCIL. I always buy pencils when I see them on sale in the stores. The look on the childrens faces for something as simple as a pencil is priceless. Bring clothes, not only for the children, but the parents too. They will wear anything you give them, but Jeans, T-Shirts, Sweatshirts/Flannel are the most common things they wear. School supplies you can bring Paper, Pencils, Pens, rulers, or whatever else you can think of. No matter what you bring, they will be delighted that someone was thinking of them. If you still want to bring toys, cars/trucks for boys and barbies for girls. I hope this helps and thank you for thinking of others who are less fortunate.

What would be the best toys for kids, for those who have limited money?

I'm shooting in dark because age of kid is not specified, so going by my experience with my 3 year old.One thing about very young kids is that the money worth of a toy has little correlation to their level of fascination with it. Infact the toys that are non-perishable, simple, fun are widely used and exactly so because they have been successful at capturing kid's imagination through the ages without breaking the bank. Each such toy is available in wide range of price unlike some new-age “learning” toys that probably took about whole team of engineers, music directors, choreographers to produce. So the nominations for the good old effective toy areXylophone, or other musical instrument . Comes in all kind or models, prices, sizes. But essentially they all are about the 7 notes. This may be a bit costlier one among other choices. Also robust enough for good quality second hand buy to fit the budget.Blocks. Again all shapes /sizes/prices. The costlier ones may add value for the parent but not so much for the kid.Ball. Any ball as long as it bounces and makes noise.Doll. That’s a classic. Kids will appreciate your gesture of allowing them to poke a human-like entity in the eye.Basic tri-cycle - A bit costlier than the other options but it can be a real value for money, if kid is ready for it and has shown intent in it, and if you're ready to NOT drive and push it for them. Also robust enough for good quality second hand buy.

Where do I get toys for the kids for Christmas if Toys R Us and Kay Bee are both gone?

The quick answer is Amazon.com. There are other toy stores too, in most towns.Other stores are carrying toys and other gift items for children. Barnes & Noble has a huge toy selection of mostly good quality toys, at Christmas and throughout the year. Other big box stores toy themselves up at Christmas — Target and Wal-Mart turn themselves into gift stores in the fall — and specialty stores often carry the high tech toys. Think of Hammacher Schlemmer and Sharper Image. If you know the toy you want, googling it can lead to price comparisons. If you have no idea, or only a category, Google or search on Amazon and see what pops up. Toys you can ride. Building toys. Games for ages ten and up. Stuffed animals. You unicorns. Model trains. Radio controlled models. Dollhouses. Dolls for ten year olds. Category searches can bring you good ideas.Searches like that also cause ads to pop up, so you may find just what you want in the targeted add. Also, googling game publishers, toymakers, etc. will take you to the company websites, where many are eager to sell their product line directly to consumers, while others can send you to stores and sites that sell them. What's missing, of course, is the chance to walk through a big toy store and see what makes your kid's eyes light up. No online site can offer that. But Target and Wal-Mart come pretty close. In Greensboro, NC, where I live, we still have a great toy store: Toys & Company, in Friendly Center a few doors down from Barnes and Noble. No store is better for finding stocking stuffers, and the stuffed animal section is brilliant. They also have a great staff who are patient and helpful year-round. Even if you aren't close to Greensboro, search a bit and you might find quite a few local toy or hobby stores that can help you find the perfect gifts. And one of the best gifts is to get a bunch of materials from crafts stores and have a few hours with each child, helping them make gifts for people on THEIR list. Spending time making things WITH your kid may be the one thing they remember from all the Christmases of childhood. As long as you're patient and don't take over — remember that it’s ok if it looks as if a child made it.

What was your reaction to the potential revival of Toys ‘R’ Us from bankruptcy?

I’m excited for my daughter. She’s four. She used to get excited every time we would go anywhere near Toys R Us. My wife and I are a bit… weak when it comes to making our daughter happy. She may have too many toys. I’ll admit that we did once lose her in a pile of stuffed toys in her own bed.Our Toys R Us closed down a few months ago. It became one of those empty buildings that makes everyone feel a little depressed. For her, I swear it was like someone had died. She never actually cried over it, but she looked sad every time we would pass by. Then she discovered Target. Target has a toy section, but it isn’t the same.A few weeks ago, the old Toys R Us building became a Halloween store. She saw all the cars out front and got excited. Then we had to explain that it wasn’t a toy store. If a new Toys R Us opened, it would be grand for her. I’m a bit hopeful. Plus, it means more jobs for the local area. That’s something we need in my community.Still, I’m not planning to invest. I am far from certain that it will happen.
