Is It Possible To Buy Animal From The Zoo.

Is it possible to buy a hyrax as a pet, and if so, where can they be purchased?

I'm sure it is possible, but please know that exotic pets are not domesticated animals, they are stolen from their environment and put through tons of stress for the whim of the trade. There is no reason to believe that these animals can be happy in a cage. Can you provide a wild africa environment for your hyrax? Probably not. So, please, don't take it away from its home.I think, if you want to see a hyrax up close, a better way would be to go on safari or to see one at a zoo. Zoos are sort of a reasonable compromise between everyone who wants an exotic pet and keeping all of the animals in their natural environments. They help satisfy our curiosity without taking so many animals away from their homes. Please reconsider buying an exotic pet.

How much do zoo's pay for animals?

Cost and price are not the best words to describe what a zoo lays out for an animal. Modern zoos operate on specific philosophical grounds that do not permit treating animals like property. A zoo may occassionally fund a "safari" to capture specific animals but that is becoming more and more rare these days. Many countries have laws protecting their wildlife from exploitation even if that exploitation might be for the animals' benefit.

Most zoos get their animals from other zoos or conservation programs and submit some of their own animals in kind. "Cost" comes down to transportation and maintenance fees as well as employee paychecks rather than "price tags."

Some zoos will buy animals on the black market but prices aren't standardized there. Even when zoos purchase animals that are legal for sale they don't rely on standardized prices. Price is generally negotiated. Zoos almost never buy unwanted pets and seldom accept them as donations even.

Is it possible to buy and keep an ape? (chimpanzee, gorilla, orangutan, etc.)?

In the simplest terms, yes it is possible. there is normally no laws that state you cannot keep an ape. but, remember that this is ONLY pertaining to outside normal city limits. most cities prohibit from keeping exotic animals. there is a good reason for this, as they are wild animals. yes, they may be cute when little but they do grow up. when they are fully grown, they can and do become dangerous. Chimps are stronger than an adult man and can be very aggressive. Chimps are not just vegetarians but will eat meat. They have been known to kill and eat baby chimps. Also, they can be very aggressive sexually.

As far as gorillas, well, if you watch the discovery channel you get the idea on them.

Orangutans, are not much better. Don't forget also, that they are known to carry certain communicable diseases such as malaria, hepatitis and other diseases dangerous to man.

They can be very expensive to keep and take care of. Require lots of room, proper temperature, water and right food sources. If you have to ask how much it cost don't get one. Zoo's are equipped with vets, animal control specialist and a deep pocket. If you have the money for a large private zoo, have fun. but, if you have to ask, you probably can't afford it.

these animals are not pets are never should be considered as such.

If someone wanted one they are readily purchased from private breeders. Unfortunately they can be found and many don't care what you do with them once they are paid for. Good thing there are animal rescue groups to take them once the owners figure out what mistake they made.

If you are really that into apes, go to a zoo and enjoy.
