Is It Right To Put My Dog To Sleep

Should I put my dog to sleep?

So my dog ? got very sick and he's not doing so good right now.i hate seeing him like that we took him to the vet and the told me they didn't know what's right with him. He's been getting sick on and off for about two months know and I don't know what I should do I hate seeing hime like that.

My mom wants to put my dog to sleep?

So I have a 12 year' old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He's really, really skinny, he has always been skinny but he has even gotten more skinnier. He has a lot of problems chewing his food, because his teeth are rotten. (We already give him food that is easier to eat for him) We have talked to the doctor about cleaning his teeth etc. but he said that if we do that he may not wake up. (It's really expensive so my parents don't want to risk our dog dying and spending money for nothing). He's always sleeping and doesn't want to get up for walks anymore. Sometimes when he's awake he get's really active again. (Especially when there is food on the table.) He starts barking really loudly and that really annoys my parents. (He has a very loud, high pitched bark). He does come for hugs every now and then and then I give him love but most of the time he's just sleeping and is too tired to get up. (Even when I'm offering him dog treats)

So the reason why my mom wants to put him to sleep is because he really stinks and keeps peeing and pooping all over the house. Most likely because he's getting old and can't hold it very well. (We do take him for walks at least 4 times a day). She thinks he's not enjoying his life anymore anyway, and that it is better for him to be put to sleep.

Anyways, I kind of disagree. Because sometimes he can be very happy and I think it's just.. If you buy a dog then you should take care of him until the end, right? Or is my mom right? Is it better to put him to sleep?

What do you think? What would you do in this situation?
Sorry that it's so long by the way..

I am torn about putting my dog to sleep..?

He is a 17 yr old Boston Terrier, He is incontinent of bowel and bladder, he has cancer in his bladder, and has tumors on his right hip/ sternum, he limps when he walks, has been falling, can't do steps, limps when he walks, some blood in the stool, seems to be hurting more, getting up every hour on the hour at night. We are not sleeping because he is always needing to go out at night. I need reassurance that I am doing the right thing. He has been such an important and special member of our family for the last 8 yrs, before that I got him from one of my hospice patient's when she died.

I put my dog down today, did I do the right thing?

Thank you for the A2A.I'm so sorry your dog died today. Responsible dog ownership often ends up in the place where the dog is suffering and it has gone beyond the owner's abilities to relieve that suffering. Sure, we would all love for our dogs to be active and healthy right up until the end, eat a big dinner, lay down for the usual after dinner nap and never wake up. But that doesn't happen very often. When that day comes, a responsible trades the dog's pain for their own.You are feeling terrible pain and doubt now. Maybe this pain and doubt that you feel is for the best because if you were not capable of feeling that way, you would not have been as good and loving an owner for so many years. It sounds to me like you did your best for your dog, even up to the point where you had to make a decision that you knew would lead only to your own grief. I believe that when we take the lives of our pets into our hands, from the very beginning it is incumbent upon us to make the right decisions for our pets. I think you did that today.Again, I'm so sorry. I wish I had the magical words that could comfort you.

Why do people think it is OK to put a dog to sleep?

A year ago, my dog Shelby Lynn began suffering from what was described as an ingrown tumor that was pressing against her lungs. The Vet gave me medication and we discussed surgery, however, I didn't really have the money for it and the doc wasn't confident that any surgery would succeed. She was almost 11 by that point and had dealt with growths and tumors for much of her lifetime.Shelby at the forefront. What had started as mild congestion and coughing at first eventually increased quite severely over the next month. The week before she died we had gone back to the vet for more meds and a steroid shot. However, on Super Bowl Sunday of last year her condition climaxed. Her coughing became much more rougher the night before, she hadn't really eaten in a few days and wouldn't stand for long periods of time or go outside. Being the weekend, there were no vets I could get her to even if there was something more that could be done. So, that Sunday morning, as soon as I woke up, I knew something was very very wrong. She had that look in her eyes that just said, “I know my time is coming”. She came over to my bed for a bit and laid next to it. I got down on the floor and just laid with her for a bit. After awhile, she got up and walked across the room and laid in the doorway. Thinking maybe she was feeling a bit better, I got up and did some things.A short time later she began seizing and gasping for air. The last thing you want to see is seeing your pet going through it's “death throes”. It's not pleasant and not peaceful. And because of that, I regret not putting her down sooner. So, to the OP, I have no fucking idea why this question even needs to be asked.

We had to put our dog to sleep due to a stroke and wondered if we made the right decision?

Sorry i meant 30th August 2009.

Thank you all for your kind words. No one knows what it feels like to lose a dog until you have done so yourself. I will eventually get another dog but it will never be a replacement for Kip. The hardest thing is coming home to an empty house with no Kip here to meet me at the door. Its amazing how you can miss being woken up at 6:30am by him moaning cause he needs a wee! I even miss having to walk him everyday. I am sure he is up in doggy heaven and happy as he could ever be!
