Is It Safe To Go To Ukraine Right Now

Is it safe to travel to Kiev and Odessa, Ukraine right now?

It depends on your understanding of the word "safe" :). It is as safe as, say, Moscow or St.Petersburg. There is no shooting or any other war presence. Also the new police force was introduced recently.Well, you should be watching your belongings when riding public transport in rush hour. Watch carefully when crossing street: drivers are not so disciplined as in Western Europe. Also avoid drinking with people you don't know.

Is Ukraine safe to visit?

I have been to Ukraine numerous times, most recently in September.  Unless you plan on going to the conflict zone around Donetsk or have a health condition requiring specialist medical care, Ukraine is not a particularly risky destination.  A couple safety points:Unless you learned to drive in the former Soviet Union, Ukraine is probably not a good place for you to plan on driving yourself around.  Traffic can be shockingly reckless, and roadways are in poor repair.  Taxis, buses, trains, and the Kyiv Metro are all reliable and very inexpensive though.Alcohol is cheap and ubiquitous, and consumed socially in vast quantities.  Tread lightly.  Be especially discriminating about samohon, self-distilled liquor.  It ranges from a finely-crafted traditional beverage, to a toxic broth condensed in an old Moskvitch radiator.  The availability of such beverages and the social customs around them make it easy to overindulge.  Security is heightened at the Boryspil Airport these days.  Expect to have your bags inspected several times, including at the airport entrance itself.

How safe is travel in the Ukraine?

1. it's "Ukraine", NOT "the Ukraine".

2. You need to specify where in Ukraine. Ukraine is a pretty big country - about the size of Texas. The crime situation - such that it is - isn't consistent all across the country.

3. You also need to specify what kind of travel - automobile, train, marshrutka, airliner, metro, or walking.

4. What are you afraid of?

Ukraine is a large and diverse country, struggling to find its own way after several centuries of Russian subjugation. It has its problems, as does any country - especially in this economy. But the people are hard-working and well-educated, and for the most part honest.

If you follow the fundamental precautions anyone would follow in any unknown place, you will be quite safe. Although it would help if you got your hearing checked - it's apparently faulty.

Is it safe to go to Ukraine right now?

This summer I want to go to Ukraine like I did 3 years ago to visit my family and have an awesome vacation of going to cool places and to Crimea.

But since this whole weird thing started in Ukraine, I'm really confused, and my family there are just as confused as well.

How is life in Ukraine?

I am an American who has been living in Kiev and commuting back and forth between there and California for the last 3 years. Ukraine is a beautiful country and like anywhere else has its pro's and cons. It is by no means 3rd world. Depending on the city you live in or visiting the life style varies. The capitol, Kiev is very modern. They have mega markets that would compare to a Costco or Sams club, with great prices on food and produce (by U.S. standards). The average person does not earn a high salary so the style of living is not what most Americans are used to. Many share small apartments because they are expensive in the capital. Education is very good, especially at the K-12 grades. Most students learn 4 languages. Universities are good but there is corruption in them and in much of the business world. This is being addressed but change is slow. Ukraine is a new democracy and as such it takes some time for the people to adjust. The people and country are both beautiful. It might take a bit to get to know people at first but once you do you have friends that are with you for life and will do anything for you. The food is some of the best i have tasted and I have traveled to most of Europe over the years with work. If you have the chance it is a place worth visiting but not just for a week of vacation, it takes time to see it and get to know it.

Is it safe to visit Odessa, Ukraine?

Those beautiful trees everywhere are made of plastic. The cobblestones in the roads too, and the remnants of Romanov architecture - all fake. The food is poisonous. It is only made to taste delicious, and is extremely well prepared, so as to entice you to eat it. Same with the wine, beer, and coffee. The taxi drivers report your every movement to the secret police, and will drive you to an abandoned area, and murder you and rob you.Everyone hates you - beware of all that friendliness - it is a cover. All well dressed young men are bodyguards for oligarchs and carry concealed weapons. Their pretty wives and girlfiriends are too - avoid any eye contact. All those pretty women, and especially those ones walking with prams, or with young children, are actually secret police. So are the street vendors. Most people you meet are pickpockets. And for Russians: Yes it is true - everyone there is a Nazi.Disclaimer:It is in my interests to keep Odessa tourist free - more of it for me.If I could afford it, I would buy an apartment there, and live there for September and October, and probably come back for New Year and Russian Orthodox Christmas.Of course it is safe!

Is it safe for Americans to visit Ukraine?

Yes, it is generally quite safe as long as you stay away from the conflict-affected east. The economy is still weak so there are issues with theft, pickpockets, etc. Has not happened to me over the past year but has happened to friends. Violent crime is comparatively rare with the exception of journalists and Putin critics. Wearing seat belts here is not a cultural norm but you should anyways. Check out a recent video below comparing Kyiv to Berlin.

Is it safe to live in Ukraine as a foreigner? ?

I am not a white person. So, it is bad for Ukrainians, because they lose plenty of chances to make money off of tourists and businessmen,ha? Well too bad for them. It looks like I should forget about going there;-(.
If there is anyone who wanna give me details or experience about exactly how bad it is for asians who are in Ukraine, would be helpful.
Thanks folks!

Safest way to ship a T-shirt to Ukraine?

I have a friend that lives in Kharkov and I am sending him a T-shirt for her birthday.

I want it to get there safely....but I have heard sketchy things about the mail service in Ukraine.

Right now I am thinking of two options. 1) Sending it USPS priority mail for around $18. Or 2) Sending it with DHL because they have a good presence in Europe. But I am concerned about the cost.

So does anyone have any advice for me on how to get this shirt to him safely with USPS or does anyone know about how much it would cost to send it with DHL?

Thanks so much!

Is it safe to go to a Russian embassy in Ukraine now?

A2A.I’ve never been to Ukraine, so my knowledge on the subject is limited, but I can make an educated guess that you might not want to visit the Russian Embassy in Kiev, assuming it’s even occupied at the present time. It can’t be a very popular place with the Ukrainian man on the street at the moment. However, if there are Russian consulates in other Ukrainian cities, you’d likely be just fine visiting ones in Lugansk, Mariupol, Odessa, or Kharkov. I don’t know if such places actually exist or not, but if they do, there’s a lot of pro-Russian sentiment (and Russian people) in those parts of Ukraine.
