Is It Safe To Start Windows Using Last Known Good Configuration

Why is my windows 7 not booting past the start up screen?

Very difficult to tell you what is wrong without access to the machine. Could be a failing hard drive, system files corrupted by virus or spyware, or several other things. There are good options to recover your data, and given that you at least get to the login screen, it's likely the data can be recovered.1. A Live CD or USB of some sort. Linux distros, Hiren's Boot, etc.. There are several. This requires you be at least somewhat technically savvy, or at least be a good Googler and able to read and follow directions to create a bootable USB and use it to recover your data.2. Remove the hard drive, and use something like Amazon.com: Sabrent USB 2.0 TO SATA/IDE 2.5/3.5/-INCH Hard Drive Converter to plug it into another computer, and recover your data that way.  This is actually simpler in many ways than the first option, but again, if you are not tech savvy, this is not for you.3. Call a professional.

After using the 'last known good configuration', how do I check what previously caused the error in Windows 7?

check with the event viewer. I am sure you will find it under either the applications or system tab. These provide more details as to what caused these errors and at what time

What are some startup options in Windows XP?

XP boot options, well it’s been a while but here they areSafe Mode: Starts Windows with the minimum of drivers and services possible.Safe Mode with Networking: Same as Safe Mode, but also includes drivers and services needed to enable the network.Safe Mode with Command Prompt: Same as Safe Mode, but loads the Command Prompt as the user interface.Enable Boot LoggingThe Enable Boot Logging option will keep a log of the drivers being loaded during the Windows boot process.Enable VGA ModeThe Enable VGA Mode option decreases the screen resolution to 640x480, as well as lowering the refresh rate. This option does not change the display driver in any way.Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)The Last Known Good Configuration (advanced) option starts Windows with the drivers and registry data that were recorded the last time Windows was successfully started and then shut down.Directory Services Restore ModeThe Directory Services Restore Mode option repairs the directory service. This tool on the Advanced Boot Options menu is only applicable to Active Directory domain controllers and has no use in a normal home, nor in most small business, computer environments.Debugging ModeThe Debugging Mode option enables debug mode in Windows, an advanced diagnostic mode where data about Windows can be sent to the connected "debugger".Disable automatic restart on system failureThe Disable automatic restart on system failure option stops Windows from restarting after a serious system failure, like a Blue Screen of Death. If you can't disable automatic restart from within Windows because Windows won't fully start, this Advanced Boot Option suddenly become very useful.Disable Driver Signature EnforcementThe Disable Driver Signature Enforcement option allows drivers that are not digitally signed to be installed in Windows. This option is not available on Windows XP's Windows Advanced Options Menu.Start Windows NormallyThe Start Windows Normally option starts Windows in Normal Mode.BUT SERIOUSLY, if it not due to a hardware restriction GET OFF of XPI know there are some VERY pricey bits of equipment that ONLY work on XPIF that is the case, Air Gap that system, clone the drive & get a supply of spares then START SAVING for the newer systemIF NOT get off of XP

Whats the difference between system restore and Last Known Good configuration?

A system restore resets the computer to the very beginning, like you just bought it. Last known good configuration sets the computer back to the last time it was running well.

C:\windows\system32\config\syt... file missing or corrupt?

The file in question is the Windows system registry. if you have backed up the registry at some point, you can attempt to restore from that backup. To do this:
- Boot to a command line from a restore disk or boot from your OS CD to the repair console or slave this hard drive to another computer
- Look for the C:\Windows\repair folder if it exists. If so and the files are fairly recent, it's probably worth the attempt to replace the registry files (system, security, and software) in ...\system32\config with the ones in the \repair folder. If they exist but are old, this probably won't work.
- If you are using a good anti-spyware tool like Spybot Search 7 Destroy, then it will sometimes store registry backups in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Backups\. Use the Spybot application to restore from here if needed.

if you do not have a backup of your registry, you will minimally need to do a full repair of the OS from your OS disk. Worst case, it's a wipe and reload.

Good luck.

Why does a laptop's Windows fail to start? What should I do? How can I start it again?

Whenever the partition having windows installed got corrupted or you've created some serious driver trouble or the antivirus blocked some file required for booting, Windows can fail to boot.If you could boot in a safe mode by pressing f2, you're good to go, just change the installation processes you've done like you've installed some software recently which might have caused this, uninstall it.It could be also a major factor you've mistakenly made that partition passive. If yes, you need iso mounted pendrive of windows ad repair it through there but do run a live linux to save data into d and e drives because you're c drive may get formated. If you get blue screen of death, you need to use a bootable iso mounted pendrive of windows and wipe of hdd containing windows and then reinstall. But most probably safe boot would save you.Amd btw let me tell you 1 thing, Abive mentioned methods nay work in other cases too and you should only go with any one of them if you're confident about that. Otherwise get a geeky friend and tell him to do it for youGood luck
