Why do Indians buy so much gold and jewelry?

InvestmentInvestmentInvestmentSafetySafetySecurityStabilityIndians predominantly by nature and culture do not focus on opulence and lot of riches they want to accumulate. The Indian culture traditionally focuses on security and stability for the future, and providing a secure and prosperous environment for the future generations. Gold, traditionally, has always been a highly valued metal. Be it as ore or jewelry or just gold bricks. It rarely ever depreciates in value, and when it does, it doesn't turn the world upside down. A piece of farm land may face drought, stretch of sea may end up being oil spilled or run out of fishes, the stock markets would crash intermittently, and most other forms of assets will depreciate over time. Not gold. Not gold metal. There is a reason it is said, old is gold and pure as gold etc adages to signify the importance of gold. You can always get a good return for the gold. Most of the times, higher than what you paid for it. It is a great source of quick cash when one is ever in dire need to get rid of compounding debts. Can be used to make jewelry for a family wedding. Can be given as gifts during wedding and as a part of dowry** to the groom (family) and as well as a gift to the married couple (from parents on both sides). You asked for why Indians do it. This is my Indian perspective and it also makes sense to me from my non Indian perspective. Not every Indian is going to agree with this since we are a diverse lot and you can not quantity us under any single trend about anything. But those you invest in gold, invest it for the above reasons (and more, but I'm not aware of those). ** I dislike dowry, but let's not get into that here, shall we? I've written my views on it elsewhere already.

Short answer, yes it is safe.

As per the new Indian immigration rules, all Indian citizens need to declare all their personal belongings (large amount of cash, gold etc) while leaving India at the customs counter (not required while your returning back to India). Your not liable to pay duty or VAT on personal property but the immigration officer can question you about the reasons of carrying large quantity of gold jewellery. Only if they feel that your smuggling gold, then they shall seize it or make you pay the required tax.

If by any chance you have a receipt of the jewellery that you have purchased, i'd suggest that you should carry it along with you. The same also applies if your carrying large amount of cash.
