They can do background checks that will show your date of employment - as the government tracks your W-2 forms. It doesn't matter if your previous employer doens't answer his phone. If you lie on your resume, most likely you will not get the job... Just have a good answer about what you did for that year... being unemployed doesn't make you unmarketable, it is a tough world out there. Make sure you talk of ways of improving your skills while you were unemployed...

But if you LIE on your resume, there will be consequences..either not ever getting a job, or if you get one, they can sue you if they find out later for misrepresentation and they will certainly fire you.

No, it’s not wrong.Of course, being honest is often the best policy but it’s perfectly right and acceptable to avoid disclosing your future plans, unless an employer specifically tells you they are just looking for people who intend to work for them long-term. In that case you would be purposefully lying and misleading them in order to get what you want. And that is wrong.I was in the same situation and I was about to turn down a job opportunity because I knew I wouldn’t stick around. I asked one of my wisest friends and he told me:“Don’t be silly. If it’s an opportunity you’d like to take, just take it. It’s not that they own you, you are and should feel free to quit at any time.”Also, probably you had already something planned, but sometimes plans change: I took the job, and even if I was supposed to move abroad after 5–6 months (no plan, just a vague idea). In the end, I decided to stay to support my boyfriend (and save money). If I had told them that I intended to quit after 5–6 months, I would have never been hired.EDIT: I changed a bit of the answer, I didn’t want to sound like a jerk who deliberately lies to employers.

It may surprise you that your boss may have understood if you said you had a really important test, and could not fail it. Unless you're a VP or something, it's expected that at times, you will have compelling personal business in retail. I'd say next time, just level with your boss. And just be honest from here on out.

If your conscience troubles you , then go and level with your boss. She or he will eventually trust you even more for it in the long run, because you have nothing to gain by admitting it, now. They'll probably say don't worry about it. And it will be a tale and testimony that you will tell to your children someday. Plus, maybe the person on call wanted the hours, and could use the money. However, if you got paid sick leave for the day, you would want to refund it, or compensate on your next time card, say, by working a day, but marking it as you didn't. Your boss will know what to do.

You are either too young to feel you can be considered for a position or too old to feel you can be considered - hence the age question. As the others have said - do not lie about your age if directly asked (although I believe in the US asking an applicants age can result in age discrimination issues).HOWEVER…. you don’t need to volunteer your age or put age identifiers in your resume. For example, you don’t need to list all 30 years of your experience or the year you graduated college. You only need to list applicable experience from the past 10–15 years.If you are concerned about being too old, you can take steps to appear younger as well - color your hair, be clean shaven, update your wardrobe, exercise, face lift, etc…If you are concerned about being too young, you can dress more formally for the interview, add as much experience to your resume as possible (part time jobs, internships, etc… - but don’t lie!), grow a beard (can add 10 years to your perceived age).
