Is My Car From Canada

Is it legal to sleep in your car in Canada?

I've done exactly what you propose to do a number of times, and had no problems at all. Nobody even looked at me, as far as I know. Along the Trans-Canada, particularly, people pull into truck stops, big gas stations, and even Wal-mart parking lots to sleep. I have no idea if it's legal or not, and in any case that kind of thing is a local thing, up to each municipality to decide if they are going to come down on people sleeping in their cars. There is no nationwide law. And doing it in a truck stop or some place along the highway is a far different matter than doing it on a residential street. I'm sure that from a law enforcement point of view they would rather have you catching a few z's in a gas station parking lot than falling asleep at the wheel.

I mentioned Wal-mart parking lots because unless it's specifically banned in that town, Wal-mart is okay with people staying in their parking lots. After all, you might buy something there. It's usually RVs; if you see a few tucked away in a corner in the evening, that's why they're there. And it's easy to find out where the Wal-marts are on their website. Truck stops aren't so easy to find because as far as I know there are no national chains of them as there are in the US. I know there's one in Kenora, one in Chilliwack, and pretty sure there's one in Revelstoke. There's one in Princeton and one in Hope. Those are the only ones I know of for sure. Google it, there may be more info on the net than there used to be.

You can also use campgrounds which are much cheaper than motels, especially if you can find small municipal ones instead of provincial ones.

In canada, is it legal to carry a knife in your car?

Knives are perfectly legal in Canada -- provided they do not have a spring or gravity assisted blade and aren't a sword.

It is perfectly legal to carry a knife in your vehicle. You can visit a Canadian Tire and buy 20 boxes of steak knives, pocket knifes, camping knives, etc. if you wish.

It is illegal to carry a concealed weapon (of any type) on your person. It is perfectly legal to carry a knife in a sheath, you just can't conceal it in a pocket or belt. It is illegal to take any weapon to a 'public gathering'. This is generally means any public building such as a school, city hall, arena, etc.

If is generally stupid to carry a knife in the glove box. If you are pulled over by the police... they can think you were reaching for it rather than the insurance papers. If it generally stupid to rely on any weapon in a vehicle. If you have enough time to reach in a glove box or under the seat, take out a knife, open the blade, and use it... you could have hit the horn, locked the door, or just driven away. If he has the ability to smash in a window... a knife isn't going to help you. You are also at a huge disadvantage trying to fight while seated and taking out any weapon is far more likely to cause your attacker to draw their own weapon or otherwise escalate to lethal force.

If you take out a weapon prior to someone breaking into your vehicle, in most cases that is considered premeditation to commit assault/murder. In Canada, self defense cases can only be made if you *had* to use such force. If you had time to take out a weapon and you didn't call the police, drive away, etc. you can't claim self defense.

Neon or LED lights under a car in canada legal?

I have been told by numerous people that haveing neon lights under your car is illegal. I live in B.C. and have been wondering for quite some time now if you are allowed to put lights under the car. I am planning to spend some money and get them installed on the underside of my car but im not sure if im even allowed to do this. If not neon, is LED allowed? If your allowed, are you allowed to drive with them on?

What is needed to sell a car to Canadian buyer?

He needs a title and bill of sale from you to buy the car. In order for the car to be registered in Canada the buyer will need a letter from the manufacturer stating that the car meets Canadian safety standards or else he would have to have the car modified to meet those standards. They are different than US standards. Daytime running lights are required on all Canadian cars as one example. There are others.

You can sell it, he may not be able to register it without spending quite a bit of money. Getting the car to pass a Canadian safety inspection will be his problem. I'd suggest you put on the bill of sale that you make no claims that it will pass inspection.

Is it possible to ship a car from Canada to Iceland?

As I'll be done with my school one day here in the US, I'll be moving back to home - Europe. I had this crazy idea. Maybe it is possible to just "drive" my car over the Atlantic. I could drive to Canada and ship my car from there to Iceland, while being a passenger on that same ship. I could take a ferry from Iceland to mainland Europe. How much would it cost to ship the car to Iceland if it is possible?

The fun part is that the car would totally not be worth shipping to Europe because it is European itself and kind of old, but I like to do weird stuff :D.

Do I need to exit my car at the US-Canada border while crossing?

It depends on your status in either country or at the discretion of the officer. I have crossed the border by road various times across the breadth of the countries, as a tourist, business visitor, worker, and then as a permanent resident and Citizen of Canada. In general for Citizens of either country, one doesn’t need to get down unless sent for secondary inspection by the CBP/CBSA officer. Sometimes they randomly pick cars to validate shopping limits and stuff, at times its suspicion. As a tourist or business visitor on a foreign passport, you always have to get down the first time you’re crossing the border for getting the visa stamped. One of the officer will come and escort you to the immigration office, where you get down to get the visa stamped. The process involves answering questions and bio-metric verification and takes atleast 15 minutes (could go up-to couple of hours depending on traffic). Once stamped, it has a validity date during which you cross the border without getting off the car. Though you’re required to answer more questions than a resident or citizen and provide details about your whereabouts and purpose. You spend more time in comparison and have more probability of being inspected. As a resident (PR or GC) or a worker (H1B or WP), you still have to stop to do the process as above and get the visa stamped, though in general both sides have some leniency as now you have a address on one side. resulting in lesser time. Once stamped your entry is valid up-to 6 months and you can do as many trip as you want. The officers get less inquisitive and subsequent rides are 1–2 minutes per crossing without getting down, though wait times to get to the post can span in hours. Once I did 15 trips in 6 months with only having to get down once for the initial stamp. As a Citizen, I just sit in the car, answer questions and continue my journey.Hope it helps!

When I move from USA to Canada, is it advisable to sell my car here in USA and not bring it to Canada since I might not get a good resale value there?

It depends on the vehicle. U.S. vehicles imported into Canada must comply with the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (C.R.C., c. 1038) so the car might require modifications such as daytime running lights in order to be registered. Unmodified cars over 15 years old might be exempt and certain modified cars are not permitted. This page on Importing vehicles purchased in the United States into Canada will give you an idea of what's involved.Resale value is just one consideration, but if you're moving to become a permanent resident in Canada, buying a replacement vehicle in Canada might be less hassle overall if the car in question is a common daily driver.
