Ten to twelve miles, depending on where you are in Coral Springs. Plan for the 30 minute drive is good...safe. Just try Sample Road, all the way east...look for signs to the "Beach." Do not be confused by google maps, etc. That list the distance to "Pompano Beach" the TOWN, not the actual BEACH, located extreme east, on the barrier island, see? That's why we have yahoo answers in addition to everyone's ability to touch computer keys. Surely you're doing that yourself, no? LOL

In standard English, we say "how many people HAVE died ...". Do you mean, how many people have died actually in the ocean, off Myrtle Beach, SC? And do you mean, since people first came there, 1000's of years ago? I would expect the number to be more than 100, but less than 10,000. Most people would make it back to land before they die, or they would die on a boat, not in the water. In the year 1893, on Aug 28th, there was a hurricane that it South Carolina, with over 1000 people killed. Some of them probably died in the ocean near Myrtle Beach.
What is the best beach to visit when seeing the Atlantic Ocean for the first time?
I see that you are in Erie, Pennsylvania, so I imagine you plan to take your first view of the Atlantic in the eastern U.S. Alas, it is hard to narrow things down from there.The rocky coast of Maine is beautiful, but if you plan on swimming you will find that it is rather chilly compared to Lake Erie. Yes, the beach itself is safe. There are riptides and marine life (jellies and sharks), but nothing out of the ordinary. There have been reports of pollution coming from ‘swashes’ flowing into the Ocean, but latest reports are showing safe levels.(A ‘swash’ is basically a ditch on the beach where groundwater (mainly rainwater overflow) is allowed to flow into the sea…this is not ‘sewage’ but pretty much has all the same things you’d find in a mud puddle or pot-hole.)The city of Myrtle Beach has had some issues with crime over the past few years, but within national trends.Like most areas that have grown significantly over the past ten years, Myrtle Beach has seen an influx of people. It is not brown. The question is nonsense. Nearly the entire volume of the Atlantic Ocean water is clear and essentially colorless (as is true of all oceans). In large areas, with the sun beaming down, it tends to look blue, due to the blue part of the sun’s spectrum being scattered back out while the red end of the spectrum tends to be absorbed. This is true for all oceans and also for fresh water.In the surface layers of any ocean there may sometimes be blooms of algae that can turn the water green, commonly, but sometimes reddish or brownish. Near shore in any ocean, if river water that is brown because it carries a lot of sediment is mixing into the ocean the mixture will look brown until the sediment settles out. And don’t ask me about the Black Sea, which is not black, or the Red Sea, which is not red.
