Is Nylon Fiber Polymer Strong

Is nylon fiber polymer strong?

I'm looking at some airsoft guns, the beretta arx competition to be exact, and it sadly isn't made if metal. It is made of nylon fiber polymer, is that any good?

Is nylon fiber polymer strong on an airsoft gun and would the G+G CM16 Raider M4 RIS be a good airsoft gun?

I am pretty sure it is a strong material, and other than the G&G L85, I have heard only good things about them. In fact, I own a G&G SR-25. Look up reviews of the raider on Airsoft retreat for more info.

What is the fiber polymer?

Fibres are the polymer which have strong intermolecular forces between the chain. These forces are either hydrogen bonds or dipole dipole interaction .Because of strong forces ,the chains are closely packed giving them high tensile strength and less elasticity .Therefore ,these polymers have sharp melting points. These Polymers are long, thin and thread like and can be woven in fabric .Therefore ,these are used for making fibres .Examples are nylon-66, dacron, Silk etc.

What is the molecular structure of Nylon?

nylon is a condensation polymer. It is made using diamines and dicarboxylic acids, when they react in the polyimerisation reaction you get a peptide bond.

The most common type of Nylon is Nylon 66, the diamine used is 1,6-Hexanediamine and the acid is 1,6-hexanedioic acid, so that gives the nylon the structure of:

...COC6H12CONHC6H12NHCO.......

Is nylon a fibrous substance?

Nylon is one of many plastics. It and others like polyester can readily be drawn into fibres which are strong enough to used as fibres in clothing. Maybe in theory you can make any plastic into a fibre but it needs to be strong enough and flexible enough to be functional. You can draw steel into fine fibres (its called wire) and its used for some specialist protective fabrics. One well known fibre is Kevlar used for protection in motorcycle gloves and clothing. Glass fibre of course is used with resin to make GRP (glass reinforced plastic) boats and other structures. A different glass fibre is also used as optic fibre for communications. More recently carbon fibre is used for high tech construction - very strong and very lightweight. The most hazardous fibres are those which you can breath into your lung where they catch and stick for a long time - asbestos fibres being the infamous example. A fibre is basically a particle with elongated shape and a fibre can be quite short as in the case of asbestos or cellulose fibres or it can be drawn into a long filiament as is the case with plastics, glass and metals.

Is there any substance that is stronger than steel and lighter than plastic?

Without a doubt it is CARBON FIBER.Lighter or equal to Plastic (as there different type of Polymer) Carbon fiber itself reinforced polymerand Stronger than Steel.here take a look

Is nylon the best (toughest, strongest, lightest, etc.) synthetic fabric that will ever be made?

Short answer no. Nylon is the trademark name owned by Dupont for the family of polyamide polymers. Nylon was developed in the 1930’s and there are many stronger polymers available today. The leading contender for strongest polymer (I am limiting it to something a person could buy and not lab curiousities) is trade name Spectra. Spectra is a trademarked name for highly strained ultra high molecular weight polyethylene which is used to make body armor. It is 40% stronger then kevlar which is what the cheaper bullet proof vests are made out of. Spectra and Kevlar are both much stronger than nylon.Comments on comments-Graphene is not a polymer but a type of nanomaterial that has a very specific structure of carbon atoms. (you can’t buy enough of this stuff to make a hanky let alone make a vest) It is also not the strongest nanomaterial. The strongest nanomaterial available in labs is carbon nanotubes and they have fantastic specific strength (that is load per weight of fiber) about 5 times that of steel. interesting but you can’t buy enough to make a rope with.Nylon is not used for reinforcement of tires- technically true but not because of its tensile strength. The issue is a broad general problem with polymers which is they have low shear strength. This means that if they are loaded perpendicular to their primary tensile loading they are likely to break. Nylon has relatively low shear strength compared to other polymer fibers like polyester.Graphite fiber - Also not a polymer but it is widely available and strong stuff. It is regularly used in making aircraft, spacecraft, race cars and boats. It is stronger then nylon and kevlar but also has limited shear strength. It is relatively expensive because it is made from PET polymer fiber but most of the mass is lost turning it into carbon fiber and the process is lengthy and energy intensive.
