Why are some Americans selfish? ‘Selfish’ in regard to philanthropic efforts and giving to charitable causes. I'm not saying those of us with money should live like paupers, but I think it'd be a generous gesture to help out those less fortunate.

I wouldn't say they are selfish but they are primarily "consumers". The American society has all kind of people and so does any other society in the world.Their consumption habit is primarily due to how Capitalism works. The American people are part of the world's largest capitalist environment that promotes "consumerism". "Consumerism" is an essential part of "Value chain" companies are based on. Companies produce goods so that they can be consumed. By selling these goods companies earn profits which is the basis of Capitalism. If there are no consumers, capitalism would fail. In order for the US to remain capitalist, it has to have a reliable consumer base and that's what exists in the US.When you live in such an environment, you are essentially under a social duress to posses more and more stuff. You'd naturally be forced to think twice if you don't have a fancy car and you are the only one at work/in community who doesn't have it. You'd be forced to think twice if everybody else is partying on a Friday night but you are saving to donate. You'd be forced to think twice if everybody is vacationing on a beach and you are at home saving for charity. One needs to blend in in order to be accepted by the society. Also, the US is a free country with good per capita income. Since, it's free economically as well, the people can reach out and grab almost anything from a cup of coffee to a yacht to a personal jet plane to a mansion. Also, systems are designed to sell stuffs. So, if one doesn't have money now, one can pay later. However, people do donate to charities (like, Greenpeace etc.). Sometimes, the donation is indirect. Like if one purchases a product a certain percentage is donated to an XYZ charity. Used clothes, shoes, furnitures can be donated to organizations such as Goodwill and The Salvation Army. In local communities, you can donate through churches and temples, there are annual or biannual food drives conducted by some organizations so that the needy could be helped and there are shelters available for homeless which run on donation money.Besides, the US provides a lot of financial aids to the needy countries. For example to Haiti.USAID/HAITI: Home PageThe capital for such aids comes from tax payers money.
