Global Village?
Communications via Internet. Manufacturing being able to assemble parts from all over the world into a product. Finaancial inter-relatedness. The US Federal Reserve cut intrest rate to forstall the imapct that falling Asia marktert would have on the US markets. Our markets had been closed for a Friday holiday but he Asia markets hit the skids. The communication of diseases that once were not known since they were seldom carried from one place to another.
How does the concept of a global village affect nationalism?
It is an interesting question. First you must ask yourself, what is nationalism? What binds a country together? Historically such binding agents have been common ethnicity, language, religion, culture, and to a great extent, geography. And when looking at geography one must take into account how location has influenced common interest--England for example becoming a world naval power from the necessity of controlling its sea approaches and defending its trade routes, Egypt being defined by the life-giving Nile River, much of the rest of Africa being slow to develop because its rivers are not navigable for great distances inland, mountain ranges that provide defensible borders, and so on. It seems odd that some consider these moorings of national cohesion to run counter to progress, and that we all might be better off in some sort of global village in which we set aside these characteristics which individualize cultures into nations. Some, of course, cannot be set aside so easily. A nation with long sea coasts and fishing and trade interests, for example, is not likely to share the same interests with the peoples of a mountainous landlocked peoples. Indeed, one is tempted to suggest that there is a strength in a diversity of cultures in which a competition of ideas may develop that is eroded in a global village seeking to break down those borders and create an homogenous world culture. The growth of knowledge depends on competition at least as much as it does on the sharing of that product of the competition. So how does a global village concept affect nationalism? Does it steam-roll smaller less developed nationalities, causing linguistic, ethnic and religious and other expressions of cultural diversity to disappear? I'll agree with your first poster that it is antithetical to nationalism in large part, but I think I will disagree on the notion of that being a desirable outcome.
What is "Global Village" ?
In an increasingly interdependent and complex global environment, Global Village is intended to serve as a portal or conduit for sharing, discussing, and transmitting a variety of timely information that impact our daily lives. A village in which most, if not all, of its inhabitants can have access to healthcare, education, food, clean water, and information. A village that our children would be proud to inherit from us! The Global Village is much like our communities, neighborhoods, towns, cities, or nations in which we live. Hence, as responsible inhabitants or citizens, we need to collectively dedicate the same energy, enthusiasm, and attention to the affairs of the Village. The reality is that whatever happens in the Village--regardless of its geographical location--often touches our lives in some ways.
Is the world a global village?
It is a global village without doubt - and a global village of the medevial times - each country is a hut with closed doors and barred or closed windows through which no one can see the head man or woman. One can not even write to them since the huts have imaginative names but do not have addresses such as yours .. good question you invisibly asked in incommunicado .... the net is the sound of the Tom Toms beating which can be heard by you ...
What does "global context" mean?
Let me explain something to all rational thinking Americans. Please. Facts will never change the mind of a liberal. History will never change the mind of a liberal. All the scientist in the world could come together in a nationally televised news conference and say global warming/climate change is not,and I repeat,not happening, and the The big O would say they are lying and that would be all the cred these libs would need. More and more reputable scientists are backing off of the climate change junk science. Makes no difference to these libs. They are bound by some unknown entity to destroy our country. Again I say no amount of information to the contrary will ever change their mind. It's an exercise in futility trying. So give up. I have. Stupidity is what it is. Don't let these know it all snobs give you an ulcer. They are a doomed breed.
