Is The Specialized High Schools Student Handbook Harder Or Easier Than The Actual Shsat

Is the SHSAT handbook anything like the real test? Is it easier or harder?

Wow that is a really GREAT SCORE!!!!!! I think they usually get the sample questions from the real test (Not the same exact ones of course) The sample handbook basically shows what types of questions are going to be on the test. Well, that is a really, really good score. I am also taking the test on Nov. 7 so hope we both get into a specialized high school...

Specialized High School? (SHSAT)?

Hi! I'm a incoming 9th grader in NYC and I took the specialized high school test in the beginning of 8th grade. I didn't get any review at all except for about a month of it before the test and I got a 341 (I know, it's really bad). This summer I am taking prep for it from July 1st to mid August from Monday to Thursday and a practice exam on Friday telling me what I would most likely be put in. I took my first test 2 Fridays ago and I got a 432. Most correct on the ELA and 16 correct on the math. I just took the second one last Friday. I doubt myself a lot and I didn't finish on the math portion on the practice and on the real thing. I'm afraid that I'm going to do good on the practice but do horrible on the real thing. The practice is a lot harder than the real thing in my opinion. My mother is fine with any specialized high school and Townsend Harris high school but my father wants me to get into American studies at Lehman college or Brooklyn tech. They have high expectations and I don't mind workin hard but I'm just really doubtful and scared. If needed, I got a 95.43 average this year as a final average and I believe I got a high 3 or a low 4 on the state test. I also have a older brother who went to Brooklyn tech that's why my parents want me to as well. Any tips for studying and to stop my fears would help and any of your experiences would too. Thank you!

Is this correct about the shsat ( specialized high schools admissions test)?

Hey! I'm taking the the shsat (the test you take in order to get into a specialized high school) in two weeks. I've been doing kaplan and another tutorial as well. On my kaplan test i got an 85, and i did the same on the nyc shsat hand book. Do you think I'll be able to get into Bronx Science? Also is it true that if you get a perfect score on one section. ( by perfect i mean like 1 or 0 wrong) and you do OK ( 10-14 wrong) on the other, can you get into bronx science ? Also are the kaplan tests harder or easier than the actual shsat , and what is the maximum # of questions that you can get wrong in order to get in to bronx science. ( this can be a rough estimate) Thanks i appreciate it. i'm sorry that i gave you guys too much ( i'm just nervous!)

Are there any 9th grade SHSAT practice tests online?

I got a 650-700 on practice tests for 8th grade SHSAT but on the real one ended up with a score round 475 for some reason. Is there anyway to sleep strategies before the SHSAT in 9th? I want some practice tests to see if I can do better. Links please ..

Which test is most similar to the REAL SHSAT?

Hey.
I noticed you added me as a contact.
I am currently a freshman at Stuyvesant High School and I can tell you one thing that really helped me during the REAL SHSAT.
Take as many practice tests as possible!
On the last month before the test, I took out ever possible SHSAT prep book I could find in my local library, and started doing the practice tests (I was kinda lazy at first, since its like almost 3 hours long for each test). However, once you start doing practice tests, you'll be much more comfortable with the test and its procedures.
I recommend Barron's and Arco's if you are looking for a challenge and to keep track of your progress. (VERY VERY similar to the real test)
I recommend Kaplan and Princeton for REVIEW, since these prep books are a little easier than the above two (but like I said, great for REVIEW)
Don't stress. You sound smart kid. You'll do fine :)
Hope to see you at Stuyvesant in Sept 2009!
Feel free to email me with any questions/concerns.

EDIT: If you want to know the time span of how much I studied for the SHSAT, I will tell you that from 4th grade, I always wanted to go to Stuy, but I basically started doing some practice problems in 5th grade (at the minimum), started studying maybe the least in 6th grade, but by 7th and 8th grade, I was studying vigorously for the test (meaning reading tips on the test, then taking practice tests and other material on the SHSAT. I will give you one piece of extra advice. Do as much research as you can about the SHSAT. It sounds so corny and all, but it really does help when you know basically all the material in the test.
Again, feel free to email me with any questions/concerns.
Good luck.

EDIT: To contradict Maria L's statement above. You do not need 80/100 to get into Stuy. You really can't estimate how much right/wrong questions you need to get into Stuyvesant. It changes every single year, depending on your SCALED SCORE (meaning out of 800), not your RAW SCORE (meaning out of 100). The conversion is not x8. The conversion is based on the number of people that take the test each year, and the number of applicants for Stuyvesant, and the number of exact seats available at Stuyvesant (which is about 700-1000 per year. Depending on the seating availability). All these numbers are subjected to change year by year.

Which is harder, SHSAT Handbook or Barrons?

Actually, Barrons is a little HARDER than the real test. Trust me. I have experience.

The handbook is most closest to the real test. I mean think about it.
The people that make the real SHSAT also makes the handbook, so it makes sense if they were both similar in difficulty to each other.

So if you get around 90+ on Barrons, you're pretty much guaranteed a spot into Stuyvesant.

Also try to put yourself in testing environments. I took about 15 practice tests in a testing environment before the test, either by myself or from places that offer practice tests, like Kaplan at queens college. That way you won't get nervous and screw up. Like I didn't even break a sweat during the test.

So yeah basically the Barrons is harder. Study hard, good luck on the test, and I'll see you at Stuyvesant! (unless you're aiming for another specialized high school. In that case we're mortal enemies (; )

Has anyone ever gotten a perfect score on the SHSAT (specialized high school admission test)?

According to recent published score reports, no one has gotten a perfect 800 on the SHSAT. The highest score I have heard is in the low 700s.On the SHSAT, there is a different score curve for the test than regular tests which slightly skews your score. Scoring much higher in one section than another might equate to a higher score than just scoring equally average in both sections. Therefore, it is unheard of for someone to get an 800 on the SHSAT.Due to the score curve and nerves, your 700 on your practice test might not equate the same on actual test. For example, I was scoring high 600s before I took my test but scored slightly below 600 on my actual test. All that matters is getting into the specialized high school that you want. It is getting in that matters, not necessarily your score (it does not give you an advantage in your class). That being said, it is still important for you to work hard and practice on the SHSAT to get the score to be as high as possible.Online SHSAT Prep | Lessons, Practice Problems & TestsThis website has great SHSAT test prep tips and problems that I believe can help you improve your score. Since they are online, they can work around your hectic school schedule and is much cheaper than comparable test prep places that I have personally found. Additionally, through personalized assessments, they help improve your score by focusing on your individual weaknesses and strengths. And on top of that, they have a score increase GUARANTEE which will greatly help you since the SHSAT is such a competitive test.Overall, the way to increase your score would be to practice and work hard on SHSAT test prep. At the same time, try your hardest to score as high as you can but do not worry about getting to a full score; your focus should be on scoring above the cutoff score. Good luck!

How hard is the shsat? 10 points!!?

The SHSAT (Specialized High Schools Admissions Test) is an examination administered to eighth and ninth grade students residing in New York City and used to determine admission to all but one of the city's Specialized High Schools.

The SHSAT is almost the same as the practice tests. It is the same TYPE of questions, but just different wordings.
For english, they just give you different, new passages.

Tell your brother to relax, get a goodnight sleep and he'll do fine(:
Also, eat breakfast.

I didn't really study for the shsat, i just read the specialized highschool handbook, and i did okayish.

I got the score of 572 & i got to bronx(:
