I think what they used in the film never really existed but it was certainly based on technology of the time. The late 1800's was a time of much research into electricity and there were many high voltage generators around then that people were experimenting with. Though none that could do exactly like in the film...that was just Hollywood. It seemed to me to be a combination of something along the lines of a hand cranked dynamo (particularly a Jedlik Dynamo invented in 1827) and an induction coil (developed in the 1830's). Induction coils of the time could easily generate 100,000 Volts. Mainly, I think it was just to show that they were experimenting with electricity to justify the radio controlled device they made...which is also based on experiments that were just beginning to go on in that time period.
