Is There A Difference Between Explaining A Film And Telling Someone What A Film Is About

Can someone please explain to me the difference between a descriptive and interpretive claim?

This web site has a simple definition of "descriptive claim":

And, while I was unable to find a single web site with a good definition of "interpretive claim", here is a quote from one with a decent definition embedded in the quote:

"All the theses in the previous examples involve interpretive claims—claims about how a literary text works, what it says, how one should understand it. And interpretive claims generally work best as theses."

I also found a website on google which dealt with film critiques, and it stated that a descriptive claim critique of a film will highlight what the film is, what is its plot, characters, setting, etc. On the other hand, an interpretive claim critique of a film would state the how...how the film worked as far as getting its message across, was the meaning clear, were the characters believable, was there a moral and was it accurately portrayed at the end of the film? In other words, did the film work as entertainment, or as an informative documentary, or whatever its intended purpose?

Also, while a descriptive claim of a piece of writing, or a piece of art, or a film can exist on its own and be complete, an interpretive claim will usually also have descriptive claim elements. Going back to the film, it would be very difficult to write an effective review of a film with only interpretive statements. Usually, the critique will have elements that are descriptive in nature, along with any interpretive statements.

I don't know if that helps you at all, but, I now have a better understanding of the differences between the two! Also, since the thesis statement, itself, is so important, I have added a helpful website on how to write a thesis statement from Indiana University in the source(s) section. The best of luck to you!

Explain the difference between documentary and fictional film. Do documentaries always present only the truth?

A documentary shows the reality of things, although that can be skewed to the intent the director wants

A fictional film can be based on true events, but there is always some kind of liberties taken. especially since you do not use the original people.

Apollo 13 is a film on the events on that flight, but it is a representation, as we do not use the real people, and certain events were tweaked for dramatic impct

What is the difference between film and video?

I know what you are saying. Film has a certain quality to it that video lacks. I think it's due to 2 differences:

1. Film spends a lot more time on the audio, both initial quality and adding of sound effects and music. Video tends to have less initial quality and the editing is often much less sophisticated.

2. Film actually records far more visual information then video. Both resolution and color then video does.
