Is it safe to go to red square in Moscow on new years eve?

Im a female and not fully Russian, that is i look more like a Latina

Americans on East Coast watch Times Square New year's. What do Americans in other time zones watch?

In Washington state we watch the East Coast ball drop at 9:00 pm.Then, at 12:00 am we watch the Seattle fireworks, or launch our own. Personal fireworks are legal in Washington state on New Years.Oddly to me, this is not the case so much in Australia. In Victoria, they watch the Melbourne fireworks. In New South Wales (where I am tying this right now on a road trip) only the Sydney fireworks were on yesterday (for Australia it is already Jan 1, almost Jan 2). I couldn’t see the Melbourne ones on TV on any of the hotel’s channels.

If watching from space, would the midnight fireworks on New Year’s Eve from each time zone in the US be simultaneous, like a wave, or be an hour apart?

They would be an hour apart. Also, you wouldn’t see them. The ISS orbits at around 250 miles - From that altitude an entire city shows up as a bright spot - you wouldn’t be able to discriminate fireworks. You would, however be able to see lightning storms. Also, the ISS orbits the earth around 16 times in a 24 hour period, or about every hour and a half. It is a prograde orbit (as opposed to a retrograde), i.e. it goes in the same direction as the earth is rotating, from west to east. Now each time zone is about 1035 miles wide at the equator, but say around 700 miles when you get up to somewhere like winnipeg. (same on the south) - so mid USA would be around 850 miles between timezones. Now the ISS basically peaks it’s northbound path about level with the middle of the US, and starts heading south. But, at the 250 mile altitude, the “horizon” for the ISS is around that 850 miles distant. Add the extra half hour, and the “next one” you are likely to see, is already over the horizon, not that you could see it, as aforementioned. The other consideration is that orbiting the earth 16 times a day, and the USA only being 4 of the 24 time zones, your chance of being over the US as it passes midnight in the timezone directly below is low, at best.

How do ppl in west coast watch the ball drop on new years eve?

Well since theres a time difference how do people in the west coast watch the new years eve in times square on tv? Or do they just watch it when its not live..or do you just not watch it at all...lol idk

Why do they call it "times square" in NYC?

it used to be called longacre square. that was before the New York Times built a building there at 42nd st and broadway.

here's a pics of the original building.
http://www.nyc-architecture.com/MID/MID104.htm

when the new york times finished building the building, they held a fireworks celebration on january 1, 1904. the crowds that attended was so massive, new years at times square instantly became a new york city tradition (new traditions for a new century). in 1907, the city banned the new york times from doing their fireworks display, so the began doing a ball drop. before 1904, most new yorkers celebrated new years eve by listening to the ringing of the bells at either trinity church on wall street, or at their local church.

btw, the new york times built a new building in 2006.

I need advice for the Times Square celebration in New York City on New Year's Eve. We don't need to be on TV, but can we even see anything if we show up in the afternoon to wait? What else is there to do on NYE?

That is the last place to be on NYE. Try an off broadway play. Get a reservation at a good restaurant. Last year we were able to see Chris Gethard’s Career Sucide. We celebrated at DBGB , David Burke’s Bowery eatery. We were able to make it back to my 52nd floor balcony. We watched fireworks in the Park (Central Park)listened to cheering on television and smoked a couple of bowls of white widow. It was a great time. No throngs of people or standing in line freezing. Trust me Times Square is a waste of time any day of the year.

Dose every time zone have a different ball that drops on New years eve because we all have different times??!!?

In the US, we get the New Year's Eve festivities broadcast to us at the correct time in our own time zones. On the West Coast, we watch the Times Square ball drop, but it's delayed so we watch it at midnight.

Where I used to live, also in the Pacific time zone, they would shoot off a huge fireworks display at 9:00p.m. on New Year's Eve; that way, it was televised as part of the national new Year's Eve special on TV. That way, the folks on the East Coast saw our fireworks at midnight.

If the Eastern time zone gets to watch the ball drop in Time's Square...?

... what do we central time zoners get to watch? And mountain and pacific timers? I've always thought it was rather cheap to watch an hour delayed version of the ball dropping in Times Square. Sorta stupid once you realize what you are watching happened an hour before. So what could we watch drop instead???

Does anyone have any clever suggestions for us non-east coasters? We could make it a new tradition for next year. :)

Why do we 'drop the ball' in New Years Eve? Doesn't seem like a positive term...?

Establishment of the Times Square spectacle followed a pattern established by night clubs that would use some sort of lights and fireworks displays to mark the midnight beginning of thge new year."Watching the ball drop" is different from "dropping the ball," a gridiron football metaphor for making a serious mistake.
