NAVY - never volunteer for anything?

90% of the time, if you volunteer, you're gonna be stuck doing some sh*tty job.

But every now and then when you volunteer for something, it's actually gonna be something pretty awesome that you'll be glad you had volunteered for.

Why should you not volunteer for anything in basic training?

That's not always true.

There are some things worth volunteering for.

I volunteered for laundry duty, because it got me out of the barracks, and there were usually newspapers around , you could read.

I volunteered for fire guard for the 4am to 6 am shift, that way i didn't have to wake up for fire guard and then have to go back to sleep, I was also fire guard when everyone woke up and had to rush out for formation, clean the barracks, etc, so i missed all that stress and hassle.

I volunteered for CQ runner on weekends, because then i could watch the football games on the CQ's TV, and even once got Micky D's from the CQ for lunch.

The down side is, you are setting yourself up to been seen and noticed by the Di's while doing those things, but as long as your uniform looks good and you act right, the benefits out way the risk.

What can a felon volunteer for?

jusjokin12 gave a lot of great resources

Just remember most places do run background checks on their volunteers. Be forthcoming about your record so that it's not a suprise when they run the background check.

And remember the type of felony may limit your options. For example if it was drug related you may not be able to volunteer in a hospital or other medical facility.

Volunteering is a great way to gain experience and looks great on a resume. Enjoy it!

Can a 13 year old volunteer at a nursing home?

You can entertain them and keep them company, but that really is the best thing you can do. If you just check what their policies are, you might be able to do more. Just take it slow, and wait for the employees to trust you, and don't be impatient. Hopefully all will go well. Oh, you probably will get a small job because people who would normally work there would get paid, so you would have a good chance. If all else fails, you could also go to an animal shelter. They always need help. You are very good for trying to help out.

How do you volunteer for a TED event?

You can volunteer for a local TEDx event by checking out our map and finding an event near you. Go to the event page and find a contact person, and just ask if they need help. Tell them what you're good at -- and they'll most likely be thrilled to have you! Local TEDx events always seem to need ushers, greeters, and all kinds of helpful people to make their shows run smoothly. Here's the map of events around the world:TEDx | Event Listing | TED.comOfficial TED events are staffed through a local agency, rather than by volunteers. We love our local staff.

What do you do when you volunteer at a hospital?

If you call your local hospital and ask to speak with the person in charge of volunteers, she will be glad to help you. Usually, there is a sheet that she gives you that tells you things you can and cannot do. What the first person said is wrong... volunteers are NOT allowed to carry any bodily fluids to labs, etc. There are plenty of things you do, but it depends on where you want to volunteer.

ER volunteers make beds and clean up rooms, assist patients to restrooms, deliver food and drinks to patients, and transport patients to their rooms (CT, Ultrasound, etc). Sometimes, you even get to watch procedures being done. I've seen doctors reset bones, stitch major wounds, do CPR, etc.

In the gift shop, you basically do customer service and handle money. The Cheer Cart is fun. These are in a lot of hospitals. It's where you tote a cart from floor to floor with candy, drinks, and magazines on it.

DO NOT volunteer on the floor with the nurses, it is absolutely boring.

In Surgery, you help restock surgical instruments and things needed for surgery, and occasionally get to watch one. At one of the hospitals I volunteer in, I'm allowed to watch open heart surgery, orthopedic surgery, and pretty much any surgery on patients. You also get to wear scrubs. :)

There is a baby floor where you can volunteer by helping the nurses watch and feed the babies. There are also areas where you can play with sick children. You will absolutely make their day.

There is just so much you can do. Answering phones, stocking medical records, greeting people, etc. Many jobs in public health require you to be a Nurse, at least an LPN. You could even volunteer in the kitchen with nutrition. Public Health is a great field and I'm sure you will enjoy it. Volunteering will definitely give you some much needed experience and will be very rewarding at the same time. Good luck and hope I helped. :)

Should I volunteer for duty on a submarine?

Liberty ports overseas assigned to a submarine. During a typical 6 month deployment, you will do 2 to 3 missions and pull into 2 - 4 ports. Not all of these ports are "liberty" ports. Some are working ports that you will do some maintenance on the ship while away from home port. Still, these are overseas. Mind you also that this is for fast attack (SSN) submarines.

Trident (SSBN) subs do not travel to foreign ports and today will not usually travel to any other US port besides thier homeport of Bangor, WA or King's Bay, GA.

SSGNs (converted Trident subs that can carry over a 100 tomahawk missiles) are to be forward deployed, but they are relatively new.

While I was on deployment in the Western Pacific, I visited Guam (working port), Yokosuka, Japan (working port), Subic Bay, Philipines, Okinawa, Darwin, Australia and Perth Australia.

Once you qualify your senior watch (Engineering Watch Supervisor) you can work on forward qualifications (Lookout, Helmsman/Pilot, Sonar, be a part of the torpedo reload party...)

Whatever you choose, give it your best, work hard and don't get an attitude. Hard work will be noticed by your chain of command and rewarded with good evaluations, high rankings, awards (all of which help you advance).

Don't cross over to the dark side - you'll understand once you get there, surface or subs.
