Is This A Good Design

What is a good design? What is a bad design?

There is no such thing as a good or bad design because design is a subjective term. But on a personal front, a good design with regard to fashion, would be something that makes you feel confident and comfortable. It highlights your mood and makes you feel good about yourself. But then again, what works for one may not work for another. Similarly, when we design for our website at TAILORMAN, we make sure we keep the “user experience” in mind. Now this would entail the customers experience in terms of easy browsing and acquiring information about the brand and its products seamlessly. To achieve this, it is important to first understand “who is your user”. This will help you understand the website order, colors, layout, product arrangement and more. Put yourself in their shoe and the rest of the details will follow. Check out the TAILORMAN website for reference. Tailorman.

How do you define good design?

A2A: It doesn’t matter how we define good design. In the end your user will tell if it’s a good design. That said I do have a simple definition I work by.Good design satisfies a user need in meaningful and measurable ways. You should be able to measure how well a design satisfies user need through research, observation, and testing. At least for it’s usefulness and usability. You’ll get a sense of how meaningful it is to the user based on repeat business, reviews, some research techniques.Learn how to use NPS, C-Sat, CES, Kano model, JTBD, usability testing, ethnographic studies, and observation to evaluate the quality of the design from the end users perspective. Only their opinion matters in the end.All the best.Side note - Design is nothing like art. In fact it’s the opposite of art. Everyone can spot good design (at least as it relate to each individual), not just the designers with decades of experience. Here’s how to keep the two straight.Design is about communication and understandingArt is about expression and interpretation

What do you consider to be good design?

A good design is a crawl space.  Once you pour a slab with all the plumbing underneath, it's both difficult and expensive to repair or remodel.A good design is a split unit air condtioner.  Allowing different zones to be conditioned to comfort while reducing load on the compressor unit (and the electric bill) by excluding other zones not in use.  It also allows for duct free installation which reduces air born pollutants.A good design is Pex pipe plumbing - although the industry standard for fasteners has yet to work itself out.  More simply, it's like the VCR tape -v- Betamax tape.  The VCR tape won out in the long run - so will certain fasteners.A good design is manufactured housing.  Not to be confused with house trailers.  Manufactured housing is a respectable alternative to custom, or stick-by-stick built houses.  Manufactured housing can also be obtained with package deals which include all fixtures, appliances, and furniture.  What a deal - one stop house shopping.A good design is a low loft gambrel roof.  Inside - allowing for hidden storage or vaulted ceiling with equal ease.  Outside - allowing for either shed roof or gable dormers with equal curb appeal.

What makes a design good?

The standard definition of good design was written by Deiter Rams, the renowned longtime product designer for Braun. It’s as true today as it was in the 1960s when he created many design classics for the German manufacturer.Good design is innovativeThe possibilities for innovation are not, by any means, exhausted. Technological development is always offering new opportunities for innovative design. But innovative design always develops in tandem with innovative technology, and can never be an end in itself.Good design makes a product usefulA product is bought to be used. It has to satisfy certain criteria, not only functional, but also psychological and aesthetic. Good design emphasizes the usefulness of a product whilst disregarding anything that could possibly detract from it.Good design is aestheticThe aesthetic quality of a product is integral to its usefulness because products we use every day affect our person and our well-being. But only well-executed objects can be beautiful.Good design makes a product understandableIt clarifies the products structure. Better still, it can make the product talk. At best, it is self-explanatory.Good design is unobtrusiveProducts fulfilling a purpose are like tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the users self-expression.Good design is honestIt does not make a product more innovative, powerful or valuable than it really is. It does not attempt to manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept.Good design is long-lastingIt avoids being fashionable and therefore never appears antiquated. Unlike fashionable design, it lasts many years - even in today’s throwaway society.Good design is thorough to the last detailNothing must be arbitrary or left to chance. Care and accuracy in the design process show respect towards the consumer.Good design is environmentally friendlyDesign makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment. It conserves resources and minimizes physical and visual pollution throughout the life cycle of the product.Good design is as little design as possibleLess, but better - because it concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products are not burdened with non-essentials. Back to purity, back to simplicity.

At my current 4-year school, they only offer historic preservation. There is only one school that offers Interior design which is the art institute. Is it a good school? When is a good design, good enough?

I think there are countless ways to see a logo as good enough. Why do i say countless ways?Because each person its own standard of Good Enough. Their Culture, Location & Exposure to the World shapes all the perception a person have for anything which effects their taste to like something. So how can we measure the quality of Design? The answer to this question is to judge your design on the designing principals. Which are developed through time. Im asking here about Principals, not rules. So all the professionals do follow principals to develop a good design and following are the those principals for a good logo:SimpleMemorableTimelessVersatileAppropriateThe most checks you have from above in your logo, the better it is on designing standards. Another way to measure your designs is to look for reviews on your designs from other professionals. Not newbie or online freelancers. Actual professionals who have 5 or more dedicated years of experience in designing.Hope it helps.

Is it a good design decision to write in all caps?

It's very difficult, if not impossible, to say whether something is a good design decision without context. However, there are some important things to consider before you set something in all caps. The most important thing to remember about lowercase letters is that they perform an distinct function, they are not simply a stylistic choice. When reading, your eyes and brain do not focus on each individual letter, but rather the general shapes of words and small groups of words. The irregular shapes of lowercase letters, specifically the ascenders and descenders, give words more unique shapes, vastly improving readability. Capital letters almost all extend from the baseline to the cap height, and the resulting words shapes are usually rectangular and similar. Remember, capital letters significantly pre-date lowercase letters, at least in formal use. The writing system we have today has very much evolved, and lowercase letters have survived and thrived for a reason. I recommend reading up on the history of caps versus lowercase here: Thierry Blancpain's answer to How did the distinction between capital letters and non-capital letters emerge?
