Kc Lights Questions For My Truck

KC hilites vs. generic off road lights?

I have a jeep cherokee and I want to put a light bar with four lights on it. The kclites are fairly expensive when compared to some generic lights I found at a hardware store. My question is are the kc lites that much better than generic and if so, how? Also, what are good specifications I should aim for when buying lights?

Can I run my truck through the car wash with off road lights mounted to the roof? Will it damage them?

I've got a mildly lifted 2007 Nissan Xterra that I want to mount a light bar with 4 off road lights with the roof rack. My Xterra is my daily driver and I use it to advertise my mortgage business, and it's black, so it gets dirty easily. Since it needs to look clean for advertising purposes, I'm constantly running through a car wash (prefer the car wash with the brushes). Will I damage my truck or my lights if i go through the car wash with my off road lights?

What are some cheap alternatives to KC lights on a brush guard?

I'm looking for some quality lights to mount on my brush guard but I'm not looking to spend a lot of money in them because its a rather inexpensive vehicle. Anyone know of any good, low priced lights?

Why do automobile and trucks fog lights use yellow as a color?

It's just tradition.Yellow light supposedly penetrates further because of its long wavelength, but it's still much smaller than fog particles.  The scattering effects of fog are essentially independent of wavelength.  Any color would do just as well.  So does white, and there's no reason to put on a filter. But yellow lights are traditional, so that's what you get.  It's actually a particular shade of yellow, since road regulators don't want a rainbow of shades on the road, but legally it can be white as well.  (In fact, the fog lights on my Honda Fit are white.)  Red and blue are reserved for emergency vehicles, so yellow is what you get.I think that there's also a marketing effect here: yellow says, "Hey, I have fog lights."  Many "fog lights" are just for show and don't do much good.  Fog lights mounted high up just glare right back into your eyes.  Fog lights have to be mounted low, since the whole point is to make sure you can see the crucial thing, the edge of the road and lane markings.

Can emergency vehicles legally run red traffic lights?

Can emergency vehicles legally run red traffic lights?Yes!An emergency vehicle’s siren and/or lights are an indication of the driver’s overriding claim on the right of way. The emergency vehicle’s lights and siren take precedence over all other traffic controls around them, for their vehicle and others. Other drivers must cede the right of way, and in most places are obligated to clear the road, pulling to the side of the road, and usually are required to actually stop until the emergency vehicle has passed. When an emergency vehicle is showing its flashing lights and using its siren and/or horn:● If you have a green signal and a fire truck wants to cross your path, the fire truck has the right of way and you must stop and clear the way.● If you are stopped at a red light and an ambulance needs to pass through from behind you, you need to carefully advance through the intersection to clear the way.● When an emergency vehicle passes you on an avenue or highway, your right of way is removed, and you must not follow that vehicle and pass other vehicles that have cleared the way. (Custom may allow an accompanying vehicle to follow an ambulance to a hospital; Local law and great caution will apply.)

How do I fix my KC lights from blowing the fuse when I turn them on?

You definately have a short.

However, I have customized so many trucks for customers. Let me tell you the best way to hook up those KCs. You'll get consistantly better lighting through and though.

Run your hot wire straight to the battery using the largest guage wire you can reasonably afford. Now run switch in your ground wire. SEE? Now you're getting straight twelve volts to your lights without the amp drop that the switch causes.

Amp draw for offroad lights?

Well you did the math almost right. You figured it for just one of the bulbs. You need to add the wattage of each bulb on the circuit and divide that by the system voltage. Your 2 130 watt bulbs draw 21.6 amps at 12 volts but at your operating voltage would be higher than 12 with the engine running the alternator would have the operating voltage at 13 to 14 volts and if you divide that out it lowers the amp draw. It would not be uncommon to for a 20 amp fuse to run a 22 amp load without blowing the fuse. But when figuring the load for wire size and fuse size use 12 volts as your guide.
Your system with the 2 additional bulbs would draw a total of 38.3 amps. A 40 amp fuse would be able to handle that load but you might run into problems with blowing an occasional fuse when first turning on the lights or even in rare cases blowing a fuse when one of the bulbs burns out.

I would recommend separating the bulbs on two fused circuits, a 25 on the 130s and a 20 on the 100,s. This will give you a few advantages one being if one of your fuses blow you still have 2 lights operating and the second being saving money on wire by not having to run wire capable of 40 amps for all the lights. With 2 circuits you could get by with half the wire size, easier to route and work with. Just make sure you use heavy enough wire.

You could still keep all 4 lights on one switch and keep the circuits on separate fuses by using relays. I recommend using relays anyway to save on wire cost by running much smaller wires into the cab and being able to use a smaller switch on the dash.

I also recommend using maxi fuses instead of the smaller spades. I run a pair of 150 watt KC's on my truck and melted alot of fuses and fuse holders until i upgraded to a maxi fuse holder and fuse. At times i use my KC's up to 6 hours and have never had trouble with the maxi fuses heating up. Mine draw 25 amps and i run 30 amp fuse on them with a relay and micro rocker switch in the cab.

How much would it cost to install a brush guard for a truck?

free, if you do it your self. probly about 120 bucks at a local shop

What is the set of 5 lights above a jeep called?

Several names...

Auxillary Lights
Light Rack
Light Bar
Anti-Vampire Equipment

Also, a light bar can come with 3, 4, or 5 lights. or customized to however many you want....

You can get lighting for any price, however you really get what you pay for when buying lights. KC and Hella are some of the top brands (and top priced) but they are extremely bright and durable for years of vibration and moisture brought upon from off roading.

Auxiliary lighting laws change state by state. Some states such as West Virginia require that all aux lights have lens caps on while on public roads. I'm pretty sure it's illegal in all states (maybe not Alaska) to drive on public roads with aux lighting on. (except for fog lights). I've yet to hear any laws that limit the amount of lights, but then again I've never looked into it. Hope this helps!
