Level 3 was started by Kiewit Construction, through a team that was mostly MFS prior. This group of ex-MFS and Kiewit execs, most importantly Jim Crowe decided that an Internet company needed to start from a clean sheet of paper and build a new fiber network across the world to meet the projected demands of a Internet driven world. Snowcrash was an influencer of ideas, at the time. They took the retirement fund of Kiewit ( Kiewit Diversified Group ) and used it as seed capital to get Level 3 off the ground. About 8 Billion in assets. ( plus two corp jets ). IPO was just 3 months away.
How is it to work at Kiewit?
Well it's been a while since I quit. It depends on where you work and what job. The pay was okay, but every time they raised the starting pay for new employees they didn't bump the others. So after several years I was still only making 50-100 a week more than new hires with no experience. And the expectation to work at least half a day on Saturdays sucks. On the last job, I was working 50-65 hours a week. Way too many. But if i'd stuck it out and become a stockholder, i'd be set up pretty well toi retire as a millionaire by now, 14 years later. So if you're willing to put up with the long hours and frequently moving, you should have a very nice retirement.
Can I afford to travel around for 3 months with a budget of $7000? I'd like to quit my job and see the world. Is it possible?
