Few people look at their food and see a weapon.

Miscarriages of justice have often happened, but how many because the police ate the evidence?

Why did Mary Maloney kill his husband Patrick in the story 'Lamb to the Slaughter'?

As was the case for many of Roald Dahl’s short stories, Roald Dahl left “Lamb to Slaughter” up to the interpretation of the reader. Personally, I think that Mary’s whole life revolved around her husband and she loved him very much. Allowing him to leave would have meant accepting that he no longer loved her, whereas by murdering him she could pretend that the conversation between them had never happened. In this way she could maintain her perfect life as the cherished wife, rather than dealing with his abandonment of her. After committing the act, Mary admits that she would be prepared to accept the penalty but fears the consequences for her child, and so she covers up the murder and saves them both. However, this is just my own response to the story - there are no right or wrong answers in literary interpretation!

Lamb to the Slaughter Questions?

1.a) In the beginning the author just makes Mary Moloney sound so innocent and nice.. i.e when her husband comes home she comes up to him and insists on getting him a drink, food etc. Roald Dahl also mentions that she is pregnant and she just seems peaceful in the beginnning.

b) These characteristics help her become the perfect murderer because no one would guess that she murdered him, since she was always so nice and innocent to everyone. She was very intelligent too because this all happened so fast yet she managed to make this such a "perfect murder".

-she left no clues
-there was no loud noise.
-she made it look somewhat like suicide.
-it all happened in a pretty lonely, isolated place.
-it was pretty cheap
-It looked like an accident.
-It was quick.
-she had a good alibi

2. sorry i don't remember exactly, i read this last year for grade 9 academic English.

3. -Reread the conversation between the police officers: "You know the murder weapon, I bet it's in this very house. Right under our very noses." Meanwhile, the police are swallowing the evidence!

-she was so nice and good to her husband but when he told her he was leaving she killed him, she left home friendly with the grocer buying the rest of the dinner peas and potatoes. She was able to keep her composure after the murder

i can't think of a third one sorry haha.
good luck and i hope this helped :) btw if you haven't read this story you really should because its pretty short and really good!

Lamb to the Slaughter (Roald Dahl) CONFLICT?

Okay, so I have to complete s hort assignment on Lamb to the Slaughter. One of the questions is "What conflict(s)--and what type(s) of conflict--does Mary Maloney face?" They mean Individual vs. Self, Individual vs. Environment, or Individual vs. Other.
[[also known as person vs. self, person vs. nature, and person vs person(s)]]

Now, I'm thinking Mary vs herself. Because you could say that its Mary vs. her husband, but he never caused any threat to her. He simply said he was going to leave her, and she wacked him over the head with a leg of lamb. You could also say Mary vs. the police, but they never even suspected her so I dont see any conflict there either. Its just Mary vs. her suspicions, and the risk of being caught. Which is why I believe its Individual vs. Self.

But I'm not sure if that makes sense, or if I'm missing something. So I'd like some other opinions on what the conflict is.

Please && Thankyou,
x Caroline

PS-- For it to be a conflict, do both sides have to.. well, be in conflict? (I know its not physical conflict, but I cant seem to word this question right) I mean, its Mary vs her husband, but the other way around. Does that still count as a conflict? Because thats the major reason I left it out, I wasnt sure whether it counted or not.

What are some connections for Lamb To The Slaughter?

What does the lamb symbolize in "Lamb to the Slaughter"?

The question isn’t only what the lamb symbolizes but who is the lamb in the story itself and what is the effect of mentioning a lamb being led to its slaughter in the title.Read my comments about what the phrase “lamb to the slaughter” implies and who the lamb is in this case in my blog post Roald Dahl - Lamb to the Slaughter (Overview).Keep in mind that the concept of the lamb in this story is obviously tied to the story’s irony as well, and in order to understand that, a clear grasp of the characters through the hints Roald Dahl leaves scattered about like breadcrumbs throughout the story is necessary.

What is the significance of the title, "Lamb to the Slaughter?"?

Lamb to the Slaughter is a short story by Roald Dahl in which a woman murders her husband by bludgeoning him with a piece of lamb. Now to bring a lamb to slaughter means to kill it. The irony of the title is that it's the husband, the unsuspecting, trusting character he is, being brought the slaughter and the lamb is the weapon in the whole affair. Simple as that.

How do I interpret the phrase, "like a lamb to the slaughter"?

It means you are the victim of a situation. Our you are being led into the lion's den. Like a lamb being led into the slaughter house is used to symbolise that you are unaware of your impending doom, you are innocent yet going to be punished for something you haven't done etc.
