What's the last song you listened to?
Woah, A2A’d for my own question, wonder how that happened (Thanks Anna Sharudenko )So I like primarily 5 genres that I’ll consistently listen to, some more than others. It turns out that now I’m on a Hip-Hop binge. The five genres, from all time favorite to least isMetal. Especially melodic death metal (After the burial, Children of Bodom, Kalmah, Born of Osiris).Classic Rock. Especially Jimi Hendrix, and other 60’s classic rock. 70’s and 80’s are good as well.Hip-Hop. 90% of what I listen to is pre 2004. This includes NWA, Wu-Tang Clan, Biggie, Method Man and RedmanElectronic Music. I listen to this when I’m gaming. This ranges from chip tunes to house music.Classical. When I study. Funny enough, I started listening to classical music because I was a dumb college freshman who believed in the Mozart effect - Wikipedia. I thought that was the reason that I did well on that economics test lol. But yeah it pretty much stuckNow in terms of specific songs I like now, here’s another list:MetalListen to those harsh vocals and clean voice. A combination which showcases her talent. Broken down like a court case none the less, the harsh voice is the prosecution, the clean is the defendant. Pretty creative IMO.Hip-HopHe rhymes Orange with things, that’s pretty damn impressiveClassic RockCould play this song’s solo live with his teeth… WITH HIS TEETHElectronic musicThis song incorporates a sound bit from a game I play, Hearthstone. The “Get Down” voice is from the card “Noble Sacrifice.” You can see why I like this song for gaming.5. Classical. While I’ve been doing work I’ve been listening to this compilation. This compilation got me through undergrad and grad school. I’ve listened to it 100’s of times but still come back for more. Thanks for the A2A again :D

Who are the greatest rappers of all time lyrically?
I completely agree on the part about Pac and Biggie — they were both nothing but average, especially when it came to lyrical ability. To me lyrical greatness is mostly represented by wordplay, imagery, storytelling and rhyming. Sure there are other elements there, other literary devices that add up to it, but these are the most important things to me.So, here’s a list of the lyrically greatest rappers in my opinion:Shad — He is probably the one whose lyrical skill impresses me the most. The majority of his songs contain amazing wordplay, and I believe that is his most noticeable quality. But, his storytelling and imagery are to be admired too. And he’s been consistent all of the time, from his debut album to his latest album — they are all filled with great lyrics.Lupe Fiasco — Definitely up there with Shad when it comes to wordplay. When I say this, I am mostly referring to his two best albums, which are The Cool and Food and Liquor. The former is especially worth listening to, because it is a greatly assembled concept album, and that is definitely something that says a lot about the lyricism of a rapper by itself.Andre 3000 — You mentioned him in your question description, and you are indeed right he’s a damn awesome lyricist. Storytelling, rhyming, wordplay, choice of words… Everything. And he’s not only a lyrical genius, but a musical genius too. Probably my favorite rapper of all time.Common — His album Resurrection is a fascinating album. It was released in 1994, so it is in my opinion the most lyrical album by that time. The wordplay is on a whole another level for that period. Common also showcases great rhyming ability on his album Be, so that one is also worth checking out.Joey Bada$$ — You might say he doesn’t belong here among the greats, but honestly, when I first heard B4.DA.$$, I was utterly impressed by his lyrical ability. To me, this guy is the lyrically greatest rapper of the new generation.Other rappers I would mention as among the best at some lyrical aspects would be Nas (imagery), Eminem (rhyming) and Kendrick Lamar (imagery & storytelling). But, all in all, the five listed above are the ones whose lyrics I’ve found the most fascinating so far.

The Clash, "I'm so bored, with the USA."Ramones, "I want to be sedated.' Neil Young " Down by the river ", simply flailing guitars, rock steady drums, and something happens down by the river. Don't know what it is, but Young songs are always so minor key set off by ridiculously offbeat, even depressing lyrics that it makes me feel better!Songs: how about records, the whole record Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Genius blooms. Are. Eye. Pea: David BowieIggy and the Stooges, Raw Power. And this always cheers me up. The Rolling Stones "Exile on Main Street". It is a Low-fi masterpiece, legend says it was recorded and produced by Keith Richards off of electricity hijacked from the French utility company; in a chateau's basement, while the Stones, now with a lucrative record contract were tax exiles in the South of France. I listen to this and think the lyrics had been spontaneously composed on napkins. Seems the players were simpatico to each other to a high degree, having put in thousands of hours playing together, and the band jumps and thumps, spits and snarls through 18 songs, most of them at a blistering tempo. And alternately, there's Jimi Hendrix, Electric Ladyland. Jimi said, in his new recording studio, he was overjoyed he could finally put on tape what he heard in his head. His care and mastery of the guitar and the studio process shine through this double disc' s compositions as transcendant and sublime. These selections may not be to your taste, oh well, but they have received the " Mother's little helpers " Seal of Approval.
