Learning A Language Online

Can I learn a language online?

These days anything and everything can be learnt online, in my opinion this is a double edged sword!!It is a great way to gain knowledge about a language, considering you have exercises, and activities online.. the problem with online learning of a language is that, the basic and most important aspects of learning the language are not touched upon, and trust me when I say this, comes from my experience with trying to learn online, platforms like Duolingo and the like must be used not to learn but to practice a language!I always advice people to first get a teacher to teach you or train you on the language and then use online resources to improve vocabulary and the semantics of the Language.

How can I learn languages online?

I am having trouble in my study of Finnish (My grandfather was born in Finland) without somebody with whom I can speak it. I know of only one person who speaks it and I see him only about once a year. If you have somebody with whom you can practice it once in a while this is the method that seems to work for me.1..Start with an audio course such as Pimsleur, get it on CD ROM, put it in your car and fix it so it starts whenever your ignition is on.2. The Pimsleur course gives you opportunities to repeat the phrases and sentences OUT LOUD. Do so! In slow traffic the people in the next car may hear you and think you are some sort of nut. This is the price you pay for learning a new language. You can not listen to music or news while the course is playing. If you have to choose, choose learning the language. You will be pleasantly surprised at how much of the target language you will learn even during a 20 or 30-minute drive. However, I find that, while Pimsleur good for speaking and understanding, it is not much good for reading and writing.3. .Do this for several months, maybe as long as a year, but keep an eye out for a college or adult education course being taught in your area, preferably by a native instructor.4..When you find a suitable course being taught in the target language, take it. After having used Pimsleur for a period of time you will probably find that you are one of the better students, even better than some whose grandparents spoke the target language.5. There are several on line courses that are good. I have been using Duolingo for German and the beta version of Japanese. I recently added Duolingo for Mandarin. I am favorably impressed with them so far and they are free. One of the online courses will help you with reading and writing.6. The problem with on-line courses is you have to sit down in front of your computer (or hand held) to use it. I am not that well self-disciplined to do this with any regularity, this is why I prefer an audio course in my car where can be doing other things, like driving.7. Been there, done that!8.Good luck!

How can I learn programming language online?

If you are starting with programming/computer science as a whole, I suggest to start it with CS50 2015. This is the best way to start learning and even takes you to becoming a pro.CS50 is a Harvard Course taught by the best professor (personal opinion) David J. Malan. This course is more like a guideline or how-to for programming. It introduces to the main topics and urges you to discover this world yourself. It starts you of with what it is and then there are assignments to be completed which in themselves is the actual learning experience. While doing those assignments (and a  final project) you learn programming in real time. After all, programming is learnt through practicals more than exams. After CS50 you won't find it very difficult to look for resources online. You should be familiar with Github, Bootstrap, The C++ Resources Network, Learn Python.PS: Please don't start web development on W3Schools. Don't listen to anyone who says otherwise (no web dev will suggest this anyways). It should only be used as a reference material when in need.

Is it possible to learn a foreign language online?

It depends on your language aptitude, your target level and the method you choose.Best methods are the ones that introduce new content progressively so that you make progress from lower to higher levels (e.g. A1 to B2).To learn a language you can turn to deductive (Assimil, Babbel, Berlitz, Busuu,  Duolingo, Mango) or inductive methods (Inlingua, Pimsleur, Rosetta Stone) and see what works best for you. The more inductive, the more difficult it may be for some learners. You should stick to one method and then reinforce it by reading (online newspapers, books, graded readers, etc), listening (TuneIn), writing (lang8.com), or speaking (signing up for language classes, either face-to-face with a tutor on italki or through an exchange at Conversation Exchange).Sticking to one method will give you the learning continuity you need, especially among the overwhelming offer you have nowadays.Beware of the difference between practicing and improving. To make progress you need to be exposed to new structures that build on what you already know so that you can move from lower to higher levels in a progressive way.Otherwise you may reach a plateau where you keep on practicing the same structures over and over again because you feel comfortable in your comfort zone.Good luck on your language journey!Related answers:How do I avoid the translation barrier when learning English? What are ineffective ways to study English? Why can't I learn languages fluently? Is Taking Foreign Language Online Hard?

I would recommend that you don't even bother with anything online! Linguists, and people with vast experience in learning languages will almost always agree on the fact that most language learning methods out there are 50-70 percent fluff! If you don't have the time to learn a language properly, and you're after something quick and easy, then you're probably headed towards dissapointment and frustration. ALL, yes, all language courses out there, with the exception of maybe taking a 4-6 year college program or something to that extent, give you nothing but a head-start and head-start alone towards going to a foreign country and being immersed in another language and making it a bit easier to pick up a few things here and there. The best method to getting as far as you can get in the shortest period of time involves 3 steps. 1st step is to complete a FULL Pimsleur(MUST BE PIMSLEUR) course. Listen to each lesson at least 2 times, taking notes the first time with new vocabulary and studying before listening the second time. The 2nd step is to form a list of the 3,000 most commonly used words/vocabulary in English, to also include the eight parts of speech(verbs, nouns, pronouns, adverbs, adjectives, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections), which you can search the web for. Once you've formed the list, you need to find accurate generic-translations, which you can apply to most common case scenarios of that language(definatley the most challenging part of all this). Once that's done, make flash cards or whichever method works best for you in memorizing vocabulary, but try to include each word in a sentence, in addition to just the new word and it's meaning. After you've memorized all that, the 3rd step is to locate 4 movies that are preferably some kind of Disney movie, or anything of a slower pace. Childrens movies seem to work best for this. Watch the movie in the language you're trying to learn with good, quality English subtitles. Watch ONLY these same 4 movies continously as much as possible, to the point where you know what's going to be said next. Try to plan completing these 3 steps in a time-frame of about 6-8 months. You'll thank me when you're done!
