If the opposing side's argument sounds absurd--e.g. "There's no difference between a legal and illegal immigrant"--odds are you haven't really heard what the opposition is trying to say. I am probably one of the "libs" you are referring to. If I were to say "There is no difference between a legal and illegal immigrant," I would be ignoring the reality that some immigrants are subject to incarceration, deportation, etc. Some immigrants are unable to find work legally in this country. Some immigrants are unable to get health care or drivers licenses. There are definitely important differences between legal and illegal immigrants. The argument most "libs" are making is that immigration laws are inherently unfair, especially when you factor in trade agreements like NAFTA. The U.S.A. undermines Mexican agriculture by subsidizing our own agribusiness, leading to an increase in crime and poverty in Mexico (and other Latin American countries). Moreover much of the violence in Mexico is being perpetrated by weapons manufactured in the United States. Also, the CIA was responsible for massive drug running in Latin America throughout the 80s (there are Congressional reports on this. It's not conspiracy theory). So all tolled, it's incredibly hypocritical and immoral to spend decades (centuries really) undermining a country's autonomy through covert intelligence operations and strongarming their economy, and then create legal barriers for the people of that country who want to get away and work across the border. Given our claims to be a moral country, and given our vast economic strength, and given our moral responsibilities, it follows ethically that we should revise our immigration policies and allow Mexican Americans whatever opportunities we can provide.
