What are some good British mysteries on TV?

Some options Broadchurch - The American version Gracepoint apparently tanked, but the British version is fantastic and the second series is running at the moment and is just as good. Olivia Coleman is going from strength to strength, I would watch her paint a wall. The Fall - This was a really atmospheric and creepy series based in Belfast. Vera, Shetland. I'm grouping them together even though they are two different series, because they are based on the books of crime writer Anne Cleave. I prefer Vera because the fantastic Brenda Bleythen is playing Vera. Silent Witness - Long running series based on forensic patholgists solving crime. Has evolved over time with changing cast. Usually worth a watch. Waking the Dead - I really liked this series, the crime is usually solved over two episodes so you get a good long run at them. Tended to be very well written. 2000 - 2011. Cracker - The role Robbie Coltrane was born to play. A forensic psychologist who 'cracks' the bad guys. Oldie but goodie. Prime Suspect - The amazing Helen Mirren playing not only a female cop, but the boss at that. I and all my sisters were obsessed with her as young woman, very inspirational. Oldie but goodie. Midsomer Murders - good way to kill an hour, lovely sets and settings, buckets of blood. Inspector Lynley Mysteries - Like Midsomer murders these are 'typical' british murder mysteries. Again good way to kill an hour but not amazing. Father Brown - Not a huge fan myself, but others seem to like it. Very much in the Poirot tradition.

Why are British mystery TV shows so awesome?

We watch rather a lot of them….. Some are, for sure. Others are just as pedestrian as most American “mysteries”.The good ones have excellent production values, good actors, and good scripts. Just like you’d expect in many quality shows. One of the advantages the BBC has is that they don’t seem to depend on commercial advertising to support the shows, so they don’t feel any great need to “dumb down” plots for the largest possible audience. But some are quite formulaic… We’re currently watching “Death In Paradise” which is a typical “fish out of water” idea with a British detective-inspector transferred to an idyllic island which has a remarkable death rate….These shows are fun, no doubt, but every episode involves what amounts to a “locked room” mystery that the detective solves with a sudden flash of insight and then confronts all the suspects in group setting…. Classic fare.

Any good drama or mystery series without sex?

Could anyone recommend me some good TV shows based on drama/mystery/action/adventure/etc that don't involve sex? I don't particularly mind romance, but I'd prefer if it weren't heavily involved.

Some genre examples include Hannibal, Revolution, and Game of Thrones, but they all have (had) sex. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, it's just not my cup of tea and sort of ruins my appeal for the show afterwards :/

What are some of the best television series (old or new)?

Looking at your list, there is no doubt that you should start watching The Wire and Breaking Bad RIGHT NOW! They are easily better than any show that's on your list (depending on what style you like, of course) in terms of writing and acting and just being a complete show with complete story-lines (and I love Mad men and the Sopranos). The writing in both shows is similar to Mad Men and The Sopranos, although, they are set in completely different worlds. They are both tightly written shows that are only 5 seasons long, so there's not a lot of wasted episodes or scenes, and every episode and season has a real purpose to it. The Wire is a better written show than any show on your list, and Breaking Bad has better acting than any show on your list. The Wire is hyper-realistic and plays out like a rich novel. The suspense and drama in Breaking Bad is off the charts. Both shows are unlike any show I've ever scene. Keep in mind, The Wire does start off at a little bit of a slower pace (but so does a lot of other shows on your list), but by the time you get to Season 3, it takes off, and Season 3 and Season 4 is as good as television gets. Breaking Bad starts off as a bit of a light-hearted black comedy, morphs into an intense suspense drama, and Season 4 and Season 5 (so far) joins The Wire, in my opinion, as the best TV I've seen.

Have you watched the British TV series Spooks?

Yes, I've watched the entire series -- twice as a matter of fact, just this year. I liked it so much I bought the DVDs. Hope I don't wait too long before watching it all again!

British tv show cold case?

Why are there so many detective shows on British TV?

Well there are a ton of detective shows in general, because people love detective shows. And one of the most famous British channels (in my experience) is BBC which is known for having tons of detective shows so that easily creates the impression that there are tons of British detective shows (very easily seen by the amount of BBC detective shows on Netflix). But in general there are a ton everywhere unexclusive to British TV.
