Losing Weight Or Diabetes Help

If you have diabetes do you lose weight?

Unexplained weight loss can be a symptom of diabetes but much more obvious symptoms are extreme thirst and needing to pee a lot. Before insulin was discovered people with type 1 diabetes would effectively die of starvation and they would be super thin. Check out http://clendening.kumc.edu/dc/rm/20_37pc... which shows a picture of one of the first kids to be treated with insulin before and after treatment - it's quite shocking how thin he was when he developed diabetes and it's a scary thought that so many of us would have died like that if insulin hadn't been discovered! Hope that helps xxx

Losing weight & diabetes?

I'm 23 yo and nobody in my familly have diabetes, but in the last 3 years, I've fallen into a depression and as a result I gained alot of weight I have high blood sugar, so is it possible that losing weight can heal l diabetes ?

Can losing weight cure diabetes?

No cure for diabetes. But type 2 diabetes can go into remission.  Controlling diabetes is more that just loosing weight.  I consider myself "carb sensitive". My body does not process carbs/sugar in a healthy manner.  If you loose weight eating ice cream then you will most likely still have type 2 diabetes. I am on a low carb/high FAT diet (not a high protein diet). The new research supporting this type of diet for diabetics is remarkable.  Several studies show diabetic subjects decreasing or going off their diabetes medications. In these same studies, subjects lowered their LDL, triglycerides, blood pressure while increasing their HDL. My doctor was amazed with my HDL number of 93 mg/dl. You will need to work with your doctor to adjust your medication.Research for the low carb/high fat (lchf) is just starting to be accepted by the medical field.  Cardiologist are in the forefront for promoting more fat (butter, MCT oil and coconut oil) and less carbs and moderate protein. Dr Eric Westman of Duke University runs a Lifestyle clinic that is very successful in treating obesity and diabetes.  Other research by Dr. David Jockers, Dr Jeff Volek and Dr Robert Lustig will provide you with the details needed to start such a program.

Does diabetic medicine help lose weight?

Yes, some medicines that are given to control diabetes help in losing body weight (5-7% of total body weight). The medicines that help in weight reduction are metformin, exenatide and liraglutide. These medicines not only help in controlling blood sugars but also help in achieving ideal BMI (body mass index). In patients with type 2 diabetes, obesity is one of the most common complications as well as causative factors, which if neglected can damage vital organs like liver, heart and brain. Thus, managing weight or losing weight in diabetics is even more challenging.Metformin, a first line drug for the treatment of diabetes, helps in losing weight by increasing the sensitivity of body cells towards insulin and delaying the absorption of glucose from gut. This causes easy satiety and fullness while eating, thus appetite reduces and helps in losing weight.Drugs like exenatide and liraglutide are similar to enzymes of gut that reduce the motility of stomach and reduce absorption of complex sugars, thus causing easy satiety in reduction in appetite which accelerates weight loss. Both of these drugs are available in injectable form.On loses close to 5-7% of total body weight with these drugs, which means if you are weighing 90 kgs, these medicines will help you lose 4-7 kgs of weight, over a period of 6 months. If this effect is coupled with exercises, the weight loss is further accelerated and it helps in preventing diabetic complications as well as achieving ideal BMI.Dr. Varun GuptaThe Editorial Team, 1mg

How can I lose weight if I am a diabetic 2?

Low Carb High Fat LCHF lifestyle works best for T2D and insulin resistant people. However don't jump into LCHF just like that. For T2D under medication, low carb can cause serious Hypoglycemia, which is a dangerous low blood sugar condition. Introduce LCHF gradually. Start with eating eggs, panneer/cheese and meat. Add lot of dietary fat into your meals. Then reduce refined carbohydrates. Then reduce other carbs but increase green vegetables.
