Master Of Architecture M.arch

Architecture, BSc vs B.Arch vs BA?

I am interested in Architecture. The problem is that B.Arch degree is a 5 year program so it would be too long for me while BSc/BA in Architecture from the UK is a 3 year degree program so it sounds like a better choice for me. Actually I am not interested in pursuing a Master in Architecture cause I'm interested in business too and would like to get a MBA from Harvard, Yale etc. Which would be better B.Arch(from some other country) BSc(from UK) or BA(from UK)? Is there any differences besides the duration of the program?

What's the best way for me to get a masters in architecture from a reputable university?

I'm in a similar position to you. I studied IT and have a tech job that pays decently but have my heart set on architecture. I went to Harvard's Career Discovery program. I highly recommend you do that or a similar program to see if the studio culture meshes with you and whether the reality of studying architecture matches up to your IDEA of what it's like. You'll also get to talk to and meet tons of Harvard M.ARCH grads and students, as well as other people in a similar position to you considering  going back to school of Arch. And you'll be able to kickstart your portfolio. After the summer program, if you're still interested, sign up for some art classes such as drawing, sculpture, furniture design... anything where you can demonstrate spacial logic and thinking in 3d. I did that and am submitting applications right now. Good luck, fellow techy!!P.S., other than the techy schools (MIT, GA Tech, VA Tech, etc.), my background in IT was seen as a negative at most open houses I went to. Architecture is a liberal art, so those with art or even philosophy undergrads are much better positioned, especially those who have taken studio classes. It is a design field at the end of the day. If you've done any graphic design, definitely play that up and include it in your portfolio!!

Can I do M.Arch after interior architecture and design?

If it was that simple, everyone would take the easier route and short-change their M.Arch with the easier interior design degree. That's why the 3y M.arch exists, it places all applicants, B.Arch and others, on equal grounds. Please visit this site for more details:www.aceinteriors.in/

What would a M.Arch degree add to an Architect career in the future?

The incentive to pursue a Masters of Architecture varies depending on where you are located, and what your local licensure rules are. In Ontario, Canada, you are not able to do your licensure exams unless you have a masters degree from an approved architecture program. The benefits of holding the official title of 'Architect' is relatively straightforward - in a firm, you will be given more advanced design, management, or coordination tasks, you can stamp drawings when needed, or start your own firm, if you feel like it. With all of these obviously comes a financial benefit in that you will not be paid the same amount as someone who does not hold a license. If financing your graduate education is an issue, a common alternative is to find a firm which you truly want to work for, and put in serious work for a year or two. If you are a good fit, the firm will be glad to give you a lesser workload while you complete your masters part-time. If not, at least you will be leaving with a good reference letter for your graduate application.Further to this, I don't believe a doctorate degree in architecture will expand your options in the working field much further than a masters degree. Unless you are pursuing education or publishing as your main focus in architecture, a masters degree is sufficient for the office.

What is the difference between masters in science of architecture and masters in architecture?

Masters in Architecture (M.Arch) is what you do if you want to be a licensed professional Architect. You acquire your M.Arch only from accredited schools. Masters of Science in Architecture (M.Sc) is a specialized study of architecture (theory, sustainability…) and does not lead to a licensure as an architect.

How long do you have to go to school for architecture?

Too Long!!!! Don't do it unless you don't mind working long hours for little pay, assuming you last the duration of the course. I would seriously recommend not becoming an Architect, but I'll answer your question anyway.

This is for the UK.

3 years BA Hons (Degree studied at Uni)

1 year work placement (RIBA approved placement and you must keep records of this)

Then back to uni to study a diploma.

2 year diploma (DipArch or similar)

Then you start a full time job and study part time to get part 3 (ARB registration) which will take at least 1 year after finishing diploma. IF you end up like me you'll finish diploma and then get a job and not bother studying for part 3 straight away as you'll be fed up with studying. It took me 10 years to become fully qualified from starting uni to getting ARB registration. I have to say that I would probably be a lot higher up the ladder should I have chosen a different career. Good luck though.
